New York.– For every player from the Dominican Republic who makes it to the big leagues, there are dozens others who were signed by teams and didn't make it. The DVD of the film "Sugar," to be released September 1, shows audiences the experiences these young players go through while trying to reach the big show.
Released to critical acclaim earlier this year, the film stars an unknown sandlot player from the Dominican Republic named Miguel Santos, a.k.a. "Sugar," played by Algenis Perez Soto.
"Sugar" is a talented young Dominican baseball player who spent his early teens in one of the Major League academies in his native country, and documents his journey to the United States to play for a Minor League team in rural Iowa.
