SANTO DOMINGO. – The "armored" tourism industry is one of the few sectors that hasn’t been affected by this year’s crisis in the United States, with the arrival 3,126,559 non-resident passengers in the first 9 months, or a 2.2 percent jump compared to the same year ago period.

Tourism minister Francisco Garcia said the increase stems from the 3.6% rise in the arrival of non-resident aliens compared to last year’s 0.5%, an increase of 3.1 percentage points, or a total 95,618 additional visitors.

Hacienda minister Vicente Bengoa said Dominican tourism won’t suffer from the U.S. financial crisis this year, but the situation could change starting February during the high season.

Garcia said increased ads to attract Russian and European tourists to Dominican Republic is one reason tourism hasn’t been affected.

Good luck Francisco on your prediction.
We know people who are cancelling right and left for Christmas in Mexico and the Caribbean. The US economy is in the tank for quite awhile.

and this year will not be affected ......as tourism in the caribbean contracts the DR in its diversity of price points will pick up contractions from more expensive markets where a winter vacation is still very expensive.....the people who expect to get warm for a couple of weeks will not do without this vacation the DR is ready in all categories with a better value and a better attitude than those Caricom sand bars

The Dominican economy in general is not going to be affected by U.S. economic performance why! Our economy is not tied to the U.S. stock market. Country's like Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil will be affected by U.S. performance, although the mentioned country's have their own stock exchanges, most if not everything is commodified through the U.S. stock market. The Dominican Republic has it's own stock market, although small. With internal investors focusing on growth domestically with returns to it's investors. Chillaxin201 we are not living in the 60's era. http://www.bolsard.com/app/do/frontpage.aspx

Plenty of people here - people take more holidays when business at home is not so busy. More direct flights from Europe. Thailand is looking less stable. French people have five weeks holiday gauranteed by state. Other Europe countires slightly less. With the 35 hour week - still popular any overtime can be rolled into increasing holidays - in some jobs up to 18 weeks per year. Plus increased self-employement/contract work throughout Europe extends holiday periods. Huge state contracts counter any effect of private sector recession. Huge Chinese contracts are now under way.

Young people have CPE contracts.

Massive rail contracts are being placed:

Some delay in major purchases; e.g. cars means there is disposible income for holidays.

It is amazing how so many people have no grasp of economics.

The DR economy is slowing down. New home construction has grinded to a halt and residential sales are stagnant.

Banks are asking for 50% down before even thinking about financing a new home.

Tourism is tanking as well.

This was about tourism - not construction. Very often Dominicans build a house without finance - construting as they can afford it. For sure tanking?

So tourisim has tanked the last 8 weeks or so - A his usual insane self - where is the evidence?
He can have have an opinion about the future for sure - perhaps one hotel owner he knows is disappointed about a couple of months bookings - but facts please.

Wether the economy has slowed down or is doing well is one thing. But in general the Dominican Republic's economy will not be affected by the U.S. melt down. Dominican commodities are not controlled by the U.S. stock markets. Look at what's happening in Argentina, the argentinian's are exchanging there Euros for U.S. dollars it's related to the banking sectors of Europe. Which in the U.S. they are rescuing the banks with more printed dollars, and Europe is doing the same with equity and some capital investments. The problem is the Euro has minimal circulation in the western hemisphere the dollar is stronger here regionally.

A few months ago everyone was panicking over 200 a barrel oil. The consumers took control and the demand went down. These are just checks and balances and the wise will survive.

Never invest or gamble more then you can afford.

maybe some of the people writing here should come and look at casa de campo, bayahibe, cap cana and bavaro and see for them selves that , in mid october , all these places are very empty . maybe talk to the taxi drivers around the airports at la Romana and at Punta Cana and then they will find out first hand that there are very few people here..Of course, the world wide economic uncertainties will affect the DR but no one knows how much ...in january we will have a better idea
