SANTO DOMINGO.- Airfares to Miami, New York and Spain have become 10 and 20 percent cheaper in the last few days due to the start of the high tourist season and lower fuel prices.

For Miami there are offers of US$188 plus taxes, so flyers can get a ticket for RD$11,400, down from its month ago price of RD$15,000.

Fares to New York range from 14 to 15,000 pesos, or 10 percent less, whereas to Puerto Rico remain at RD$16,000 and aren’t expected to decline because there aren’t many airlines that cover that route.

Dominican Travel Agents Association (Adavit) vice president Edison Ureña said the country’s high tourism season and the Christmas festivities begin November 15, when the airlines customarily offer roundtrip specials, with prices now even lower as fuel prices fall.

We have only felt the first round ripple of the financial crisis. We consumers start to watch their pocket books the trips to the carribean are one of the first types of items to cut. When US consumers got a stimulus check many saved the money or paid off debt (instead of stimulating the economy with shopping as the US Gov forecasted). The same will be true for the future rounds of stimulus.

Citi is laying off 50,000 whereas many will be New Yorkers to get straight line vacation to the RD and carribean. We can expect more from other financial institutions to come. As these workers take some time to recover, send out resumes and find new jobs they will still need time to heal financially even after they find a new job.

Just as we were in a higher growth period under Clinton we have started the first phase of a contraction when we re-elected Bush II which will accelerate in the near term.

Even outside the USA; tighten your belts!

GREAT NEWS about the airfares....... american from miami in the early part of dec .is $330us....
$203 us is for the ticket and $127us is for the taxes, which brings the total amount of $330us..
then you have to pay $10us at the airport, for a tourists card. so $137 goes to the government of the dominican no other island or country i know of charges this amount.

When I got my stimulus check I assumed that I would spend it on a ticket to DR, but I ended up spending it little by little on things I regularly buy. I would love to spend all my money in DR but the cost of living in the US has risen so much.

Yes, the airlines tickets are always low. Just add taxes, fuel surge charges, baggage checking fees, departure fees, and many other fees.

What ever monies you save on your ticket, will be gone the minute you step out of the Airport in DR.
