SANTO DOMINGO.- The National District City council will recover Santo Domingo’s Malecon, the beach at Güibia, the Juan Baron plaza and the Eugenio Maria de Hostos park at a cost of 300 million pesos, aimed at beautifying avenue George Washington’s panorama.

Mayor Roberto Salcedo, who made the announcement during the inaugural of Duarte avenue’s First Booksellers Fair, said the works in the Malecon will begin in January.

He said during his tenure a series of parks were built, and that several technical-vocational schools, day-care centers and tech centers will be inaugurated in 2009.

He said the cleanup of the Ozama and Isabela rivers is another challenge for Santo Domingo’s town hall, a project he said the Santo Domingo East City Council will also participate.

The new would be excellent if other Malecons like in Puerto Plata and Santiago Riviera could benefit from that restoration, besides a big majority of that money to be used is from these two cities resources.

A long time in coming but in addition to cleaning up Guibia Beach, I'm wondering why the authorities along with the cooperation of hotel properties in the area have not considered expanding the beach area along a good stretch of the Malecon. This would transform the area 360 degrees and attract the "beach-seeking" tourist and locals alike. Much of that area is not deep water and along with some much needed sand and wave breakers to protect the perimeter and the planting of new coconut palms would create a new venue for locals and visitors alike. Maybe it's something they'll give thought to once the folks at the Sans Souci project clean up the Ozama River and give that area a complete transformation.
