Santo Domingo.– Fewer tourists are flocking to the beaches of the Dominican Republic. New statistics from the Central Bank show the number of visitors began declining in the second half of the year as the global economy began to weaken.

The Dominican Republic is heavily reliant on tourism and has been the No. 1 Caribbean tourist destination in recent years.

The bank reported that total visitors between July and October fell to about 1.1 million, down 5.6 percent from the same period last year. The downward trend accelerated in September and October, when visits were down 10 percent.

GC, you are my buddy, but i hate to say " i told you so". this is the only outcome that i could foresee, given the economic trends. i knew that the decline would begin this winter. i have friends in business on the north coast , and they are not catching flies in their establishments. sadly, next year will be worse. the world economy will not pick up substantially until 2010. this is going to be a period of adjustment, with painful repercussions.

without a change in the economy and confidence stabilization next season will be violent....I am that negative....But dread I believe that after the inaug they will come in decreased numbers of course....this is not a recession it is a panic a normal recession would have had little impact on this season....also a20% decrease this year is manageable even 30 %.....beyond that and you have very very serious local problems.......When you come over the wall dread I am sorry old pal I will have to shoot you

20 or 30 % decline is not manageable. you have to understand that the 20% does not lead to a linear decline; you have to factor in the multiplier effects of that numerical decline. 20% decline in footfall can wipe out numerous businesses. do you believe that Macy's would survive a 30% decline in customers this christmas?

actually, Jander, i am not in the minority. i did not discover anything here. far be it from me to take credit for anything. the signposts were all there. the questions are not "if". they are "how bad", and "how long". and GC, all economic activity is subject to multipliers. 30% falloff in hotel occupancy leads to falloff in taxes, ground transportation, employees, etc. the indirect effect on the economy is exponential, not linear.

Forecasting events can be common sense when you analyze data, conditions and have a fair understanding of the world economic indicators. i predicted the war with iraq the real estate bubble or fiasco gas hikes and drops and financial collapse each within 8-12 months before they happened. when I first hear Obama speak at the DNC I announced to family a possible new presidential candidate in 2008.

Its not that the future can be predicted but understanding probabilities and the variables in play draw a fair scenario of things to come. First step is determine possibility then review data, ther is plenty of free data available. Reality is, If you are not in the inner circle then its irrelevant.

At Home:
I predict within 6-8 of Obamas inauguration the economy will demonstrate measurable improvements. Europeans will cater to Obama finding themselves trying to placate citizens and appease Obama. They will hesitantly provide troops for Afghanistan and cater to any request with little or no resistance. The worst is over, or will be over by inauguration. The U.S. infusion of capital estimated 3 trillion from a 7 trillion bank account > will pacify worried investors, banks and consumers. Credit will begin to flow steadily. Real estate/housing market will begin to show modest improvements first markets showing improvements will be tech industries Alternative Energy and Electric Vehicles, then housing industry. Investment in infrastructure will increase i.e govt. services buildings roads, highways IT, Increasing jobs and creating new job markets.

On Energy
gas prices will stabilize between 70-95/Brl Opec looks to increase profitability and braces itself for a decline in US consumption as U.S. begins to seriously invest in Green/Alternative energy alternatives(Obama initiative). Expect possibly gas to level off at $2.50-$3.00 for 2009 as U.S. imposes higher taxes. Currently a dozen or so EV manufacturers are lobbying govt assistance for financing EV research Companies which can produce better vehicles than the big 3 collectively if successful expect one of the Big three go bust. My guess, Chrysler. Expect a marketable increase of EV within 1-2 years. Big oil sees birds migrating a sign of change. Wind blowing in different direction. Interest building on diversified energy markets green/wind power, hydrogen generators.

KANABACOA, when you say black friday numbers were better than last year, which numbers are you talking about? footfall? surely more people probably went into stores, but that does not tell the story. bargain hunters do not indicate economic activity. there are no numbers out yet regarding actual spending. windowshopping is not an economic activity. you roll out a bunch of bailout numbers, as if that is going to cure the problem. where do you think these dollars are going to come from? continued printing of money will drive the value of the currency downwards. in order to invest in treasury bills, investors, such as sovereign wealth funds, are going to demand higher interest rates, or they will take their money to the euro instead. you apparently believe that fed will just throw money around, and the problem will go away. not so, my friend; there are structural considerations which got us here.

The numbers are out and as I previously said acknowledging smaller margins for "black Friday" however the combined weekend you have an increase of 7%. It's an indication of public's desire to spend. Time will cure the problem. hell inflation is damper but look at the big picture, Consumers desire to spend. Like any investment portfolio your swf is invested in a wide variety of financial instruments spreading the risk. Considering the volatility and the U.S backing of the financial sector U.S investments may be a good buy. SWF usually attempt to purchase cheap assets when possible.

Therefore they may spread their risk between U.S and European markets. Understand much depends on global speculation and perception of the stability of the greenback. And though it will have to borrow more it will with the intent of making a return. But the return is secondary to the main goal, regaining financial stability and consumer confidence. I did not state it is the cure to the problem, but will stop the bleeding.

KANABACOA, throwing 8 trillion dollars (the updated figure) at the problem to stimulate the economy is NOT the answer. the last stimulus package was in June, and July saw the worst month of the year. the problems are STRUCTURAL. the USA has the greatest current account deficit of any country on earth, and most of it is occasioned by the massive trade deficit..the country consumes more than it produces. because of the disparity of income, wherein only the incomes of the top 10% has kept up with inflation, the level of savings is extremely low, inhibiting capital formation, and the level of indebtedness is out of control. freeing up credit so people can go on a spending binge will only compound the problem. the FIRST thing that has to happen is to cure the housing mess. if that stays the way it is, look for the Great Depression of 2009. you heard it here!

This is to gouletcolonial at Comanche St. Croix and dreadlocks. You guys should get together. Boy, do you have a lot to say -

First: Comanche - you seem to be spending a lot of time on the computer - why not clean the floors or paint the place -

Second: dreadlocks - I guess you don't have a job. You seem to be spending a lot of time trying to figure others problems out.

I have been to St. Croix 16 times. Paradise, beautiful. Locals suck. Crime is out of control. I have stayed at a friend's house at Carambola (house sitting), have stayed at the Danish Manor (thank god for the gates in front) and have stayed at the King Christian. My rent-a-car got broken into in Fredrikstead when I was at the Sundowner, I was accosted in the Government Parking Lot in Christianstead one night, I saw a gun pulled out at Hondo's and learned to be at home when it got dark.

Comanche - besides a bad economy - no one goes to St. Croix because it is not safe.

Rule number one on that island has always been leave your car unlocked and nothing of value inside, if you friend did not tell you that he / she probably never leaves the house. The locals have a tremendous attitude problem and most of the sucessful "local" businesspeople on the island are from down island and are not Cruzan. The island is beautiful and the diving is in the top 10 spots in the world.

Commanche - I will go back to the DR because I am comfortable and safe. I was on St. Croix before and after Hugo. I have 7 Sonya bracelets. By the way who cares about "Geraldine Ferraro and Maureen Ohara and Victor Borge dined on rack of lamb.........you know nothing of the St Croix I knew...you're too late."

This is 2008 -

actually, whooptdou, i really do not like arguing with anyone, for any reason. people like you are the reason. i am a cerebral guy; i like reason and logic. guys like you are different. you cannot be shaped into anything better than you are. so, your introduction to the site is to start off with ad hominems, and asertions about "public assistance", a matter which you caucasians will always invoke when you have discussions with people you surmise to be colored. we hear it every day here; "get a job"; "i hope i am not paying for your public assistance", "you are looking for a handout", and the list goes on. no sir, i am here, trying my utmost, to escape all you white supremacist redneck types, but you seem to turn up everywhere. i thank God every day that i never took a dime of public assistance in my life; no white man can ever consider himself to be some benevolent donor to my cause.

TIFSKE Said-
"When you talk about the 60,s and 70,s like it was greatest time ...I get sick.."

Whats wrong, no memories of that time period, like not being born yet. Spoken like someone who does not remember his first girlfriend, first car or maybe it is because you have no idea how it is to wax nostalgically and see where you are now in life versus where you were. How many different places on this globe have you lived, or wish you have visited. For someone who is Punta Cana supposedly enjoying themself you sure are spending a lot of time on the computer, I thought leisure time was playing golf, spa treatments, hobknobing and the sort.

Dread if you need someone to join in with another pinata stick .........

TFISKE is just a clueless, lonely jackass of a person who is too dimwitted to understand the law of unintended consequences. the more he tries to natter and annoy me, the more people on the forum recognise him for the pointless retard he is. most people on this board have said at least one meaningful thing in their stay here. he just natters on daily, whining about one person. people recognise vendettas, and adults do not appreciate them. so, TFISKE,get lost. thre needs to be an IQ test before permitting people to post, so we can keep semi-literate refuse from contaminating people's efforts to have a sensible conversation.

Okay Dreadman - first of all, I'm a girl. Second, idiot, I never mentioned anything about race - never even thought about it. But I do know one thing - you try to intimidate me with all your big words, etc., but then I use the dictionary.

ALL I WANTED TO SAY IS THAT THE DR IS WONDERFUL.

You and your big mouth - keep gabbing fool, all your big words are telling us all what your all about. Keep putting everyone down.

By the way - I'm from NY and I'm black.

Comanche - for a while I tried to figure out a way of living on St. Croix - every time I got off the plane, with the wind blowing in my face - I said I'm home. But then, I tried how could I own a home down there and how could I make a good living - I even tried with what I do (law firms) and I couldn't get it done. I feel like I'm stuck here....

well, whooptdou, i find you rather hilarious. you join the forum, and your very first post is to launch off into ad hominems. the very first reference you make to me is: i guess you do not have a job. then you say i am nasty? i disagree with numerous posters in this forum, but personal attack is not a strategy of mine to get my point across. i am not here to get into fights with people. i state my case, and, given you disagree, you state yours. maybe, we either meet somewhere in the middle, or we maintain academic distance. but this aggressive, bellicose entry to the forum suggests to me that however nasty i might be, you maybe should try taking the plank out of your eyes first, if you get my drift. it is not that you came in with a neutral disposition, made a civil comment, and i launched off into a tirade against you. YOU ATTACKED ME! we may not share common philosophical ground, but that does not give you cause to be gratuitously rude. to this point, i hardly recall calling you

whooptdou, let me revisit the chronology of my posts, to see where i could have made you so angry. i am going to forget my exchanges with TFISKE, whose idea of humor is to come on the board every livelong day and try to annoy me, for no reason. as long as he leaves me alone, i never remember he is alive. so here goes, in chronological sequence
1; i said that economic prospects were gloomy
2)i said that a 30% decline in tourist arrivals is unmanageable
3)i followed up on that position
4)i requested a prognosis for future oil prices
5)i disagreed that the economic crisis will be over by January
6)i questioned the Black Friday numbers, saying they were inflated

show me one of those positions which is sufficiently objectionable to evoke an attack on me, such as you did in your initial foray into the board.

I feel like I'm at a renaissance fair - "kippered herring", "screed from Finske, written under another nom de plume!", "epistles", "the Gattita will never know of your indiscretion" - my dictionary is geting worn out!

My favorite thing to eat in the DR is fish, beans and rice, and some mystery meat they call "Canadian bacon"!

My favorite thing to eat in St. Croix is Eggs Benedict -

Now, you're making me hungry - this NY'er has to go now to make some chicken cutlets!
