What get's me about the Castro defenders is that they are so blind.
If Castro is so great why is Cuba such a sh*thole for the Cuban People?
Why do thousands risk everything to escape?
Why are almost 10% of the population in exile?
Why, after 50 years of the "Revolution" do the Castro brothers still refuse to have free elections?

this thread is a hotbed of intelligent analysis. there is a stated postulate, which either stands up to inspection, or it does not. the statement is that while other tourist destinations are dying on the vine, Cuba is surging ahead. so, it brings out the Cuban detractors like GC and anthonyc, who try to belittle the achievement. regardless of your antipathy, guys, the facts remain on paper. maybe you might want to wonder why such a miserable hellhole, so poorly run (in your opinion), is succeeding where others are wilting. talk about jealousy! and, anthonyc, there are people risking their lives every day to escape capitalist paradises. (see the word YOLA). if the USA was to relax the border patrol, maybe 5% of mexico would stay south of the rio grande, in the paradise of Carlos Slim. you do not need to admit it, but the guys are doing something right, if they succeed where all others fail.
From: United States
maybe, just maybe, the legendary security of cuba, relative to other tourist destinations, militates in its favor, especially at times like these. it is quite possibe that prospective tourists are considering the social displacements which might be occasioned by the economic downturn. they are probably reluctant to go to more laissez faire destinations, where desperate actors might rob, attack, and otherwise discommode them. maybe, they feel safer with the notion of going to a place with stricter population control, like cuba. from all acoounts, they do not seem to have anything special that others do not have. and, as to GC , with his repetitive and tiresome references to "eat till you puke" all inclusives; do we not have these at places like Playa Dorada? from all the literarure i have read, the preponderant majority of hotels in the DR are enclave style. you keep making mention of all the great changes to come; how about waiting to see how they eventuate

I'm curious how the most ardent capitalist demagogues reconciled their beliefs during the current economic crisis to propose and accept government welfare bailouts. They had no problem capitalizing their profits while socializing their losses. True capitalism should bear the consequences of the financial free markets. I guess it's harder to maintain principle when principal is on the line in which case principal then becomes the only principle. I am a proponent to capitalism but an opponent of hypocrisy. I am no supporter of Castro or his regime in Cuba but I do see the obvious hypocrisy in trading with China (US$345.45 Billion to date) although their human rights record and totalitarian governmental system is far worse than that of Cuba. One does not have to be a sympathizer of the Cuban government to acknowledge or credit their achievements in science, education and athletics. To credit these accomplishments all you need to do is state the obvious.

Thor Halvorssen, president of the respected Human Rights Foundation, also takes aim at the actor in the piece, calling the Castro brothers "thugs and murderers," saying "that Sean Penn would be honored by anyone, let alone the gay community, for having stood by a dictator that put gays into concentration camps is mind-boggling." I'm an old leftie myself. But having grown up in Miami, where I saw up close and personal the flood of people--straight and gay--fleeing persecution in Cuba, I no longer share Penn's naive admiration for totalitarian despots who pass themselves off as populist heroes......Dread your hero forward thinking about AIDS

Dred,
The Cuban embargo is a failed political policy that is still in place only to placate the right wing Cuban voting block. The logistics of the embargo may have been a good way of trying to
de-legitimize the Castro regime by fomenting civilian unrest within the populace but 46 years later, the embargo has served only as collective punishment for the people of Cuba. The desired effect of the embargo has failed and removing it now is seen only as an admission of victory for Castro by the embargo proponents with nary a consideration for the suffering. I have often wondered, when Cuba does become free, how diffficult the reconciliation of the expats and the nationals will be when they speak of the termoil they suffered while the expats surged to continue the restrictions of the embargo. I love the U.S.A. always but I love my government only when it deserves it and sadly it don't feel they deserve it wherein consideration to the continued support of the embargo is concerned.

Capitalism can be as evil as any other form or government. The to make profits out of other peoples misery or ther failure to spread benefits of individual endevaours to other than the very rich are just two of the areas where maximising material reward for individuals are under question.
Society reaches a consensus as what might be a just reward to individuals with special talents and applies some regulation, both in terms of monopoly control and other mechanisms. For exampl an eye surgon is rewared by a salery much above national average, but equiatable in terms of other positions requiring similar training and apportionment of total funds available for health in the society etc.
Clearly also it is within the power of government to render groups bankrupt in soiciey who have honestly worked. For example if Brazil orange juice etc. were allowed into the US without restriction then Florida citrus growers would suffer.

Fifty years after Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, the big question about the Cuban revolution is not whether it was justified, but whether it was worth it. From all available evidence, it wasn't.
A dispassionate look into Cuba today shows that, while the country has reduced the pockets of extreme misery that existed during the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship, a majority of Cubans are poorer and have fewer opportunities to improve their lives than they did five decades ago.
Cubans today have a pretty low per capita income compared with other Latin American nations. They have fewer television sets, telephones, computers and cars relative to their population than most Latin American countries, and the lowest percentage of people with access to the Internet in the region, even below Haiti.
And while Cuba does well in literacy and infant mortality indicators, it does lousy in others. Cuba has one of the highest suicide rates in the Americas.Hope you enjoy your tropical paradise

On a recent visit to Cuba, Russian president Vladimir Putin saw that all Cubans were wearing broken shoes. He asked Castro how come after 50 years of socialism Cubans didn't have any good shoes to wear. Castro asked him: "And are things any different in Russia?"
Putin answered back that yes, things were different and if he wanted he could come with him to Russia and if he found anyone wearing broken shoes he had his permission to shoot him.
Castro and Putin headed to Russia in Putin's plane and as soon as Castro came out of the plane he saw a person wearing broken shoes. Castro took his pistol and shot him.

Only a collective firmness against the threats and blandishments that the rich countries will use at the WTO can save the poor nations from an impending catastrophe on the food front. There is a major flashpoint ahead. The UN special rapporteur on the right to food, Olivier de Schutter, has warned that the Doha Round will not prevent another food crisis in the world. In this first-ever report prepared by a UN independent expert on this highly contentious subject, de Schutter has examined whether the current path of trade liberalisation in agriculture complies with the WTO members’ obligations towards the human right to adequate food. There is much argument over this.
First when people have a certain standard of living and low child mortality then birthrate tends to drop. Plus countries such as China already under pressure have one child policies etc.
However on a theoretical point the nitrogen and carbon cycles, on which we depend on food, are capable of considerabe enhancement. Little of the Earth and Sea surface is cultivated at present. But rich countries have huge environmental footprints and some are only now gradually reducing these, by for example, eating less meat, more urban farming etc. Comprehensive food planning has only been done for a few countries such as China.

Their motto "libertad o muerte" has been the old and worn out slogan for their autocratic hold on power. Their out of sync with the 21 ST century bureaucratic government is seriously outdated and stumbling to barely keep up with the rest of the world and lives in the forgotten era of the 1960's.

Dominican Republic can compete with Mexico Puerto Rico and the entire carrieban and still be number one or among the top.
Nobody is worried about communist cuba, lol.
As long as we're capitalis and their communist.
Donald trump in DR never has to worry about nationalisation
From: United States
Cuba is great...unless you are a Cuban!
the same can be said about DR
he is dead already, walking dead (zombie)... el gran gusano viejo pendejo!
If Castro is so great why is Cuba such a sh*thole for the Cuban People?
Why do thousands risk everything to escape?
Why are almost 10% of the population in exile?
Why, after 50 years of the "Revolution" do the Castro brothers still refuse to have free elections?
When the out-of-the-box President elect takes office and begins to reform... one of the things that may quickly fall by the wayside is lifting the embargo on Cuba (which is a economic stimulus for more trade and tourism as well as opportunities for Americans).
In general, I do have more confidence in the Cuban Gov versus that of the RD (even though I know they are communist)
Interesting considering Falconbridge's recent lay-off of 60% of its employees in DR.

You make a false assumption. This free marketeer is 100% against the federal bailouts.

The fact that you and a handful of other "free marketeers" that may not have been directly in a position to lose millions and or billions of dollars in assets does not make a false assumption of my statement. I will concede by rescinding my statement to reflect that I was questioning the hypocrisy of just 99.99999999999% of those accused.

1% of US is in prison most for ficticious 'crimes'.Another 1% is being depossessed and will live in autos, salvation army hostels or auto parks.
Another 12% are living off food stamps worse than Cuban rations.
Old people are dying of cold, people are living in tent cities, literacy no chance unless daddy is rich or you wear a gun to school. Currency is likely to devalue by 50% according to economic comentators.
If poor you likely die of simple diseases.
This is why so many US citizens are choosing to exit kindof sharpish. DR fotunately is benefitting - you see it every day with new arrivals. US citizens go back to the the US for unjustified prison, thuggery, destitution or worse.
S.
Have you ever been to the US?
And what exactly is a ficticious crime?
again. I am against all bailouts unless the need was caused by the government itself.
BTW It was Cuba who placed an embargo on trade with Cuba first.
I am against trade with murderous dictatorships.
So are you against trade with China, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Russia because the US is not.
You have explained why we trade with these countries which was always obvious but do you not agree that they are all murderous regimes? If so, then perhaps Anthony can reiterate his opposition to trade with these countries as he is against trading with murderous regimes.
S.
China yes.
Venezuela and Russia are democracies(Flawed but still democracies)
Saudi Arabia is a Monorchy and not a murderous regime.
Russia is a puppet democracy that murders journalists critical to the current regime (Anna Politkovskaya) and dissidents even when they are in foreign countries (Andre Lugovoi) among countless others.
Saudi Arabia is one of the most socially oppressed countries in the world where critics are sent to jail, tortured and killed. There have been confirmed reports by human right groups of young girls murdered for crimes that include kissing boys and using the internet. Not to mention the countries financing of Suni militia groups and sponsorship of fundamentalist Wahabiism or that thirteen of the fifteen 911 hijackers were Saudi citizens.
Venezuela, according to Claudia Jardim, a journalist who produced a special documentary on the country’s land reform process says the political murder-rate in the countryside has jumped to an estimated one peasant leader per week since January.
All murderous regimes Anthony, yet we trade with them but not Cuba, why?
Keep punching dread the "old airbag spent petard" is tiring and most boring since he is out of his usual one liners and old tired expletives.

It's really no contest and an historical event of a world heavyweight champ (you) against a feeble, sick and pale, skinny and bruised, tired old geezer troll with no punch left in his arthritic hands.

Exactly what moral highground are you guys talking from? The bottom of the Grand Canyon?

Imagine putting up with the stinky ignorant troll in a "publico" with no air and the windows up!
Death would be most welcomed!
That could be new torture technique used to make prisoners confess, worse that listening to recordings of babies crying constantly or water boarding.
Did you hear the "troll" ruminations?
His clear lack of a formal education in his mode of expression points out to another factoid;
Not only is the troll stinky and unpleasant in every which way but he also stands alone
in his conversations as the rest of the posters are ignoring him.
His worst punishment is to be ignored! self full filling prophecy has come to being.
Once again the troll is repulsed, rejected and ejected by all.
Nooooooooooooo! In his warped mind set he really believes that? He is a sick puppy then.
Is that why he runs to every post to piss his one liners and can't wait to be the first one to offer
his out of sync comments once a new post opens?
He said jerk, jerk, jerking how about that, a new word from his florid vocabulary.
Another really sick trait of the troll is his delight for homoerotic exchanges.
He didn't use his other favorite homoerotic saying "massaging each others balls",
now he is up to two one liners, I guess that's an improvement.
I have to go the gas mask filter has to be changed.

This BB is even getting invaded by Fascists and the like in the guise of the American Legion.
Given the history of the American Legion and its founders, speeches addressed to it about standing up to fascism are somewhat ironic. Particularly since the leadership retains its reactionary role, with its national commander declaring in August 2005 that it would "stand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops, or worse, endanger their lives by encouraging terrorists to continue their cowardly attacks against freedom-loving peoples . . . We had hoped that the lessons learned from the Vietnam War would be clear to our fellow citizens.

The next day there was this headline in all Russian newspapers:
CRAZY BEARDED MAN SHOOTS THE CUBAN AMBASSADOR AT THE AIRPORT!
From what I hear of the US with soup kitchens, food stamap, dispossessed people sleeping in tent cities, huge crime and delinquency and ill-eductated teachers who can't add up or spell the US needs to re-introduce this idea.
In the US if you are out late at night the cops will shoot you for sure just to tidy up.
US citizens continue to rejoice at the misery of others while ignoring their own problems and promoting misery for the World at large.

Woe to the wretch who fails to rear
At this dread sign the ready spear!
Far o'er its roof the volumed flame
Clan Alpine's vengeance shall proclaim,
While maids and matrons on his name,
Shall call down wretchedness and shame,
And infamy and woe.
When flits this cross from man to man,
Vich-Alpine's summons to his Clan,
Burst be the ear that fails to heed!
Palsied the foot that shuns to speed!
May ravens tear the careless eyes,
Wolves make the coward heart their prize!
As sinks that blood stream in the earth,
So may his heart's blood drench his hearth!
Heed the call of the fiery cross!

Over population in the world is also the cause of food shortages.
We must get to the point of 2 billion inhabitants on earth. Over population just stresses the already limited food sources.
Religious leaders are partially at blame for not encouraging birth control.
We must impose birth limitations now as an urgent and needed measure.

That 7 Million is probably closer to 2 million Americans who have left.
