Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Association of Real Estate Tourism Companies (ADETI) is opposed to pay 5 percent of the land value for developing tourism projects. They claim the crisis is also affecting the tourism sector, which is one of Dominican economy's main income sources.

ADETI president Juan Bancalari said "It’s counterproductive for the tourist areas that authorities charge that percent because of the Tourism Incentive Law 158-01, which promotes tourism development and provides 100 percent exemption from taxes payment."

Bancalari stated that tourism has been affected by the increasing crisis, despite the real estate sector being the one attracting more investors to the country.

I thought everyone in the DR is recession proof, according to Leonel and his cronies.
Zona Franca is up in new starts according to Leonels cronies.

Jim,

Exactly. Every other story is about how good the tourism sector and the economy is doing. Teflon for everyone!!!!!!!!!!

Slowly but surely the truth about the effect of the world economic crisis, on the DR, is coming out. If only the truth about every other lie told to us by our government were to surface as well.

Here's a surprise:

The Camara de Cuentas today declared that the $560,000 RD bonus that each of the new judges received for their less than three months work was both legal and justified. I was really kind of hoping that they were going to say something more honest, like, "Listen, we don't really deserve this money, but since we are in a position where we can take it without any shame whatsoever, we figured we might as well help ourselves. After all, this is why we became judges and why we are involved in politics. Would a lion not kill and eat a helpless gazelle? Would a spider not eat something caught in its web? Would a Dominican government official not steal from the pueblo?"

The PLD cronies and their "fellow travelers" should start putting all these stupid tax laws in reverse.
The tourism sector can not stand any more taxes and putting this 5% of the "appraised" land value
is just another one of all the innumerable obstacles for our development.
The PLD fiscally predatory vultures should contain their atrocious hunger for more taxes at least until the present world economic crisis subsides and the light at the end of the tunnel can be seen.

Well, if the tourism industry paid taxes, maybe THEN they'll start demanding better governance. No taxes no demands better governance. Instead, the Gov gets revenues from indirect sources (ITBIS, ENTRANCE/Exit Taxes, and so on). These indirec taxes hurt everyone, but they are not condussive to get people to demand better governance.

And by the way, SCREW all these incentives that benefit these TNCs who come here, make money, and then ship it out the country. Incentives for companies that leave a majority of the profits to benefit local people and local development. By local people I don't mean the politicos - esos tarados, mal paridos, who only care about stuffing their pockets!

Who was that Moron who said that the DR would not be affected?

Yes, find out how much they ship out and take a vig off of that. I am sure they will pay the 5%.

Of course we are forgetting about all the corruption kickbacks that have to be paid to the Dominican politico landrones. If that is worked into the equation they are probably owed money.

Really the tax should be about 5% annual fo 5 years - to pay for infrastructure.
This is like Florida and other areas.

Like that money would go for infrastructure.

It would only go to line the pockets of the Politicians. Period.

That statement reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield movie “Back to College”. He says something to the effect “What? Are you living in Disney World?”

There is not such a thing as crisis here, so please pay your obligating 5% as everybody else. Do not invent things, never seen so many tourists in Punta Cana before.
