Havana.– Cuba established a new historic record yesterday, breaking the 2005 record of 2.319 million visitors, announced Manuel Marrero, minister of tourism, during his report to the National Assembly of People’s Power, attended by Cuban President Raul Castro.

According to Granma Internacional newspaper, the minister stated that, despite the impact of the hurricanes, which halted the growth trend of 13.4% accumulated by the end of the second quarter and damaged many facilities, Cuba has received more than two million visitors for the fifth consecutive year. He estimated that the year will close with a figure of 2.35 million visitors.

Marrero outlined tourism in Cuba since the beginning of Revolution and the development process with the construction of new hotel facilities after the disappearance of the socialist camp in the 1990s. He also highlighted how, as a result of this policy, there has been an 11% annual average increase in the number of visitors from 1990 to 2007.

the key words in this press release is.... " according to Granma international newspaper "... that in itself is good for a laugh ...Like..the Cuban citizen who sent Manuel Marrero, minister of tourism, a telegram saying ..." I am in the smallest room of my house .I have your press release from Granma in front of me .It will soon be behind me ".....this is what Granma is and should be used for

There must be some honesty in reporting and a named publication bears a certain responsibility above the rest. In looking at other publications outside of Cuba it is evidence that tourism has grown and still increasing to the tune of US$2.1 billion dollar for 2007.In another area it is reported that Cuba hold the third largest nickel reserve in the world of U.S.$2.7 billion while tourism its largest source of revenue. This is not from Granma.......................................... which make the report from Granma International a reliable source of information in this regard ..... like it or not who may and may not............

josean it's a lost cause trying to educate some people here. When a few months ago i posted those statistics most here said those numbers were provided by the Cuban government, and were lies. Then when i posted direct link to their beloved CIA, they shut up but nobody admitted they were wrong. Let them enjoy in their imaginary reality, where Cuba is broke and the rest of Caribbean is in an economic boom.

Josean here's a link about some rennaissance happening in Cuba I found interesting

"
Castro's revolution moved quickly to force integration, opening up private clubs and other facilities to all races and socioeconomic classes. It also dismantled the sociedades, both black and white, decreeing them obsolete in the new class-color-blind Cuba. Some survived into the first years of the revolution but were eventually disbanded.

When looking at numbers or words given by anyone, I go to their enemies or competitions and compare their numbers and words. Then I go to independent sources that don't have any interest personal or otherwise. My views about politicians and religions will never change but these ate not important when the true is presented. What is freedom of the press? -- an irresponsible press that I can't depend for correct information or one that wants to convince me of their agenda. There is no such thing as freedom of the press anywhere on this planet, they all are subjected to government regulations and laws. Some want to boast that they can published freely anything until they uncover their true -- just asked "Geraldo Rivera ". There had been many like him and of course in other nations outside the U.S. -- they just disappear when they can't be bought or persuaded to run their own shows with no politics. Some hate the Cuban government and some love it ..some have no reasons to do neither.

Cuba's roughly $11 billion in yearly foreign-exchange revenue, the $2.5 billion from nickel exports is plunging because of falling commodity prices; an additional $2.5 billion from tourism is also dropping because of poor services and the world-wide fall in vacation spending. The remaining $6 billion springing from the export of so-called professional services, that is, the revenue generated abroad by renting doctors, nurses, teachers, security and intelligence personnel, as well as everyday handymen, to countries such as Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and now Paraguay, will also diminish, since the payer of last resort, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, has suffered a precipitous fall in his own oil-based income.

Fidel Castro's unending battle for life leaves too many questions unanswered. No one knows how deep his younger brother's intentions of economic reform are, since the elder Castro will not really countenance them while he still breathes. And no one can predict whether the Cuban people will continue to make the enormous sacrifices they have already faced, when it is no longer Fidel doing the asking, but rather his uncharismatic, technocratic and unpopular brother who must show up at protests and food riots and talk the people down.

Across the political spectrum there are hopes that a new generation and new leadership will make an improvement in relations more likely. Yoani Sanchez, 33, a Cuban blogger, wrote recently: "Obama enjoys much sympathy among Cuban intellectuals, among the black population, and especially among the young people. The campaign of Barack Obama, grounded in the word 'Change', is very similar to the desires of the vast majority of Cubans, especially those between 25 and 40."...the upper echelon of Cuban leaders are over 70 ...It is time to go ...one way or the other...and take josean the whiner with you

Fact is...Cuba remains a big draw for tourism dollars. It is viewed as a safe destination, one with cultural and opportunities....one with mystery and intrigue....not to mention its natural beauty and diversity...some of the best diving and snorkelling you will find and prices that don't break the bank.

Politics aside....as this seldom factors in to a vacation decision, it offers a good bang for the buck ratio. The taxes paid prior to arriavl are some $155 cheaper per person than coming here....that equates to 2 excursions.....hotel at the departing city the night before and the upon returning.....etc.

I work here, but have been to Cuba on 29 different occasions....some as short as 3 days....some as long as 6 months. Both have something to offer the tourist....unfortunately while Cuba seems to be reinforcing its market, the DR is simply diluting its market...asking for more...and giving less.

Radical, lefties, whinners, weenies and wankers want the embargo lifted!

"An FIU poll conducted in November showed that 55 percent of Cuban Americans in Miami, an anti-Castro bastion that has long backed a hard-line U.S. stance on Cuba, now favor lifting the 46-year-old trade embargo."

In a letter to Obama this month, a coalition of business, agriculture and trade groups called USA*Engage said it was time for a new Cuba policy and proposed lifting all sanctions and allowing American tourists to travel to Cuba.

The coalition --which includes the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the National Retail Federation -- called for an immediate exemption for the sale of farm machinery and heavy equipment to Cuba.

"We support the complete removal of all trade and travel restrictions on Cuba," it said. "The United States could engage in bilateral discussions with the Cuban government."

continued:

It further proposed that Obama license direct banking services with Cuba, a major obstacle of the embargo that pushes up the cost of doing business with Cuba.

The Cuba Study Group, a moderate organization funded by Cuban American businessmen, has also recommended lifting all travel restrictions and allowing remittances by any U.S. citizen as a way to "strengthen the internal pro-democracy movement" in Cuba.

Ive been to Havana. I saw whites make fun of blacks a lot, I did see poverty, desperation, robberies, prostitution and was harassed by the police. I tried to read Granma every day there and almost threw up at the simplicity and transparency of its propaganda. I would never believe anything that came out of it and did notice that althought it was present in most households, it was really there to be used for other things but reading(that bathroom thing included).
I also saw lots of wonderful art, many schools, hospitals(to some degrees hospitals lack a lot of basic things like aspirin), very educated people and lots of hope for change. Disent is in the air there, its been brewing, something will happen soon and the sistem will be overthrown. I wish for a peaceful transition for their sake.

Yes, Cuba's tourism will keep on increasing mainly cause people a;; over the world with the funds to vacation will want to know for themselves if the stories that they hear about Cuba is true or not. They want to feel the adventures of being in a forbidden country, to witness a different system of government. The reasons as to why so many nations had voted against the embargo is cause they had witness their system not to be what others had portrayed and there are even investors taking advantages and investing in Cuba. There are those that want to paint themselves only with the negatives like if their backyard is not fill with the worse dirt and pretending that it does not exist. These people should volunteer to pay more taxes and fight the wars or force their children to go to Irack.

Sajomero,
you are a typical Miami Cuban propagandist. Mr. Cubano, how do you explain Cuba doing better in the categories listed below than the richest coutry in the world (U.S.A.) despite the embargo? Let's compare per capita data.

Death Rate Cuba 7.19 per 1000 ; USA 8.27 per 1000
Infant Mortality Cuba 5.93 per 1000; USA 6.3 per 1000
AIDS/HIV Cuba 0.1 per 1000; USA 0.6 per 1000
literacy Cuba 99.8%; USA 99%
____________________________________
Despite the embargo, life expectancy of Americans (78.14 yrs old) is almost the same as the Cubans (77.27 yrs old) living in Cuba. That's amazing. If Cuba were under the U.S. influence like other countries in the Western Hemisphere, Cuba would have never made so much progress.

Go figure my friend !!!

Cuban right-hander Yadel Marti and outfielder Yasser Gomez have defected and are in an unknown location before attempting to reach the Dominican Republic to seek an MLB career, sources told ESPNdeportes.com.
It seemed like only a matter of time. Both were kicked off their team, Industriales de la Habana, earlier this year, likely for plotting to leave the country. Marti was Cuba's best pitcher during the 2006 WBC, but he wasn't given the chance to participate in the Olympics this year. The 29-year-old may not be cleared to play in 2009, but he'll likely get a significant major league deal once he becomes a free agent. Gomez, 28, isn't likely to be pursued as heavily........why would they ever want to leave the workers paradise

Of the many stories that I heard from Cubans that had come to the U.S. in the 80's and 90's, this is the one that is most striking. " I was a young men, a student and had gone to Russia ( Soviet Union ). Had come back to Cuba and some of my friends were now living in the U.S., they send me pictures standing next to a new luxury car and some pictures outside a big house. They will tell me in the letter that if I were there with them I will have the same. My mother urged me not to leave but I didn't listen so I left thinking I will have all the things my friends showed me. " This person ended up in prison in the U.S. forever regretting having left Cuba. While working at Wall-Mart I had the opportunity of working with many young Cubans and none of them had negatives things to say about Cuba. One lady used to work at the airport in Cuba, she told me that if she could go back she would but she will not be accepted as if she had not left. No choice but to stay in the U.S.

it was a unhappy 50th anniversary in Cuba..One safe bet, however, is that there will be no mass outpouring of jubilation to mark the anniversary, for a simple reason: living standards are dire. "Our situation is so precarious nobody wants to celebrate," said Gabriel Calaforra, 75, a former ambassador and high-ranking official. "There is almost total indifference. People are waiting for change."

The authorities have booked popular musicians for a free concert at the Anti-Imperialista Tribune on the Malecón, Havana's seafront, so there will be dancing. But joy, like so much else on the island, will be scarce. The struggle for decent food and basic goods makes people obsess about vegetables and conserving everything from soap to toilet roll. Few are in party mood.

Material hardship was eroding trust in the system, said Erikson. "A lot of people think the revolution has important accomplishments but pervasive scarcity puts economic questions at the front of their minds."

The government blames the long-standing US embargo. Unquestionably it has wrought havoc, but most analysts say communist central planning, stifling bureaucracy and lack of economic freedom have proved even more ruinous.

The state controls about 90% of the economy, obliging almost everyone to work for it, but pays an average monthly wage of about £12. A ration of rice, beans and other staples, and supposedly free public services, keeps people alive but does not avert grinding poverty.

Poverty reeks from the decaying, overcrowded buildings of central Havana. Though from a distance they are picturesque, up close you see the grime and smell the plumbing. Likewise, the 1950s Chevrolets and Fords, surreal mechanical marvels, lose their charm if you are a sardine-wedged passenger or pedestrian choking on the fumes.

Cuba became dependent on tourism after the end of Soviet subsidies in 1991 triggered savage austerity and a need for foreign currency. With a casual tip dwarfing state wages, scientists, teachers and other professionals quit their jobs to become waiters, chambermaids and taxi drivers. "Our most brilliant minds - serving coffee," lamented Alvaro, a university lecturer turned tour guide.

a quote from Ches grandson " "The Cuban Revolution died some years ago: it had to be killed off by those who act in its name to make sure it didn't turn against them; it was institutionalized and smothered by its own bureaucracy, by corruption, nepotism and the rigidity of the much-celebrated Cuban 'revolutionary' state. All of my criticism of Fidel Castro comes from his walking away from the ideals of liberty, from his betrayal of his own people and his frightening zeal to place the interests of the state above those of his people. Let's be honest, a young rebel like Fidel Castro in today's Cuba wouldn't be sent into exile. He would be shot."

Fidel dies and goes to heaven. When he gets there, St. Peter tells him that he is not on the list and that no way,

no how, does he belong in heaven. Fidel must go to hell.

So Fidel goes to hell where Satan gives him a hearty welcome and tells him to make himself at home.

Then Fidel notices that he left his luggage in heaven and tells Satan, who says, "No hay problema, I'll send a

couple of little devils to get your stuff."

When the little devils get to heaven they find the gates are locked - St.Peter is having lunch - and they start

debating what to do.

Finally, one comes up with the idea that they should go over the wall and get the luggage.

As they are climbing the wall, two little angels see them, and one angel says to the other, "My goodness!

Fidel has been in hell no more than ten minutes and we're already getting refugees!"

St Peter came to the Lord and said, "I have to talk to you. We have some Cubans up here who are causing problems. My flute is missing, mojo sauce is all over their robes, they are making guayaberas from their robes, they have domino tables in the cafeteria, and they're wearing baseball caps instead of their halos. They refuse to stop making Cuban coffee on the heaven's stairs, and some of them are walking around with just one wing." The Lord said, "Cubans are Cubans, Peter. Heaven is home to all my children. If you want to know about real problems, call the Devil". The Devil answered the phone "Hello? Damn, hold on a minute". { continued }

. The Devil returned to the phone, "O.K., I'm back. What can I do for you?" Peter replied "I just want to know what kind of problems you're having down there". The Devil said "Hold on again. I need to check on something". After about 5 minutes the Devil returned to the phone and said "I'm back. Now what was the question?" Peter said "What kind of problems are you having down there?" The Devil said "Man, I don't believe this....Hold on". This time the Devil was gone 15 minutes. The Devil returned and said, "I'm sorry Peter, I can't talk right now. Those damn Cubans have put out the fire and are trying to install air conditioning"

As Cuba approaches the 50th anniversary of its revolution this New Year’s Day, the island’s Communist government appears to be taking a harder line against a budding group of Cuban Internet bloggers pushing for greater freedoms.

On Thursday, Cuban blogger Claudia Cadelo, was summoned to appear at the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of domestic security. A day earlier, Yoani Sanchez, the nation’s most prominent blogger, was told by authorities that her activities had “crossed the limits of tolerance,” and was told she couldn’t hold a planned meeting this Saturday of local bloggers,

One thing about Canadians is that their hearts and humor are always in
the right place!

Jeff Janzen, a manager of a Electrical supply house in Penticton, B.C..
was asked on a local live radio talk show, just what he thought of the
allegations of torture of the Iraqi prisoners,...suspected terrorist
bombers.

His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous
applause from the audience.

HIS STATEMENT:

'If hooking up an Iraqi prisoner's nuts to a car's battery cables will
save just one Canadian's life, then I have just three things to say,
' Red is positive, Black is negative, and Make sure his nuts are wet.

At the inn, Don Quixote meets the man with the weapons. The man tells him a story of two magistrates who lost a donkey on a mountain near his village. To recover the ass, the magistrates went around the mountain braying like asses themselves, and though they did not catch the donkey, they were very impressed with their own ability to imitate asses. Neighboring villages heard about their frivolous antics, and now each time a member of the man's village passes a member of another village, the other villager brays at him. As a result, the two villages are going to war.

RARE roast beef splashed with meaty jus, pork enrobed in luscious crackling fat, perhaps a juicy, plump chicken ... these are feasts that come to mind when one thinks of quintessential British food. Lately, however, a new meat is gracing the British table: squirrel.yes folks tree rats

Though squirrel has appeared occasionally in British cookery, history doesn’t deem it a dining favorite. Even during World War II and the period of austerity that followed, the Ministry of Food valiantly promoted the joys of squirrel soup and pie. British carnivores replied, “No, thank you.”

These days, however, in farmers’ markets, butcher shops, village pubs and elegant restaurants, squirrel is selling as fast as gamekeepers and hunters can bring it in. the British will eat anything surprising they are not better lovers

There is nothing more satisfying than a tradeitonal pigeon pie. Fresh pigeons shot at dawn with an air pistol when you are nine yaras old then cooked for dinner with potatoes and turnips.
Usually the potatoes and turnips can be liberated, in the autumn the combine leaves plenty of wheat in the chaff for the pastry, lard is a bi-product that can often be begged, an egg for the pastry can be found on a farm after eggs have been collected. My Romany friends used to like hedgehog baked in clay - but I never developed the taste.
Friends used to scavange dog buscuits after pampered pets had their fill to make bread and pastry - but me never!
