Santo Domingo.- According to local media reports, movie actor and director Denzel Washington, winner of two Oscars, spent his Christmas vacation at Villa Caletón in the Cap Cana tourist complex in the east of the country, where he also celebrated his 54th birthday.

Washington told local reporters that the Dominican Republic was a “wonderful country”. Dominican actress Dania Ramírez, of the "Heroes" TV series, and with the Minister of Tourism of the Turks and Caicos, Michael Misick were also at the celebrations.

The press reported that Denzel Washington "enjoyed some good Dominican food and a swim in the sea".

I hope he didn't try to sneek out of his resort where he would surely be mistaken for a Haitian and get deported.

mikey here is what is happening in your beloved Cuba...Poverty reeks from the decaying, overcrowded buildings of central Havana. Though from a distance they are picturesque, up close you see the grime and smell the plumbing. Likewise, the 1950s Chevrolets and Fords, surreal mechanical marvels, lose their charm if you are a sardine-wedged passenger or pedestrian choking on the fumes.

Cuba became dependent on tourism after the end of Soviet subsidies in 1991 triggered savage austerity and a need for foreign currency. With a casual tip dwarfing state wages, scientists, teachers and other professionals quit their jobs to become waiters, chambermaids and taxi drivers. "Our most brilliant minds - serving coffee," lamented Alvaro, a university lecturer turned tour guide.
