SANTO DOMINGO.- The new airline Air Dominicana will begin operations in May with flights to the United States, Mexico and South America, to later expand to other destinations, in what government officials and business leaders say it’s vital for the growth of tourism.
Tourism minister Felix Jiménez yesterday said the arrival of first airplane, a Boeing 737 with a capacity of 180 passengers, is expected for April, whereas for yearend will arrive two others, a Boeing 737 and 767, to cover European routes.
The executive vice president of the hotels association (Asonahores), Arturo Villanueva, said Air Dominicana will contribute to remarkably diversify the tourism offer and to increase the number of visitors.
According to the magazine Mercado, foreign investors own 47 percent of the new carrier’s shares, the State has 30 percent, and local investors 23 percent.

...... let us hope this will lower the cost of air travel to The Dominican republic.....Super high taxes and little competition create a situation where air travel has become a luxury......D.R. air fares need to come down

Didn't we try this before?????? and it failed for 2 reasons 1. lack of mechanical service and FAA cancelled landing rights 2. Didn't pay the leasing bill!!! the 747 may still be in the hanger in New York so what has changed?????

cross your fingers and knock on the wood we hope they get it right.....competition makes for lower prices...are you listening cerveceria natinional....they are coming for you also

A new airline entering the market will be a price taker, so affordable air fare is doubtful because of the industry's cut-throat nature. Especially given the high cost of fuel these days. Nonetheless, its a step in the right direction for the country and after all the euro having a slight edge over the dollar these routes makes sense...

let us hope that they will be competitive ........in the beginning it should not be hard ....but if they are to successful the big guy will try to squash them.....I hope they attack the San Juan route

I remember when i used to fly "dominicuando" airlines and it had a long way to go in order to even come close to the competition. I hope this time around they "learned" their lessons. I wish them well for we do need competition.
