Madrid.– Over the last six years many of Spain's largest
hotel operators have established hotels on Jamaica's north coast, thus
establishing the country as one of the Caribbean's leading tourism
destinations.
Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, Jesus Silva has said that his
country has surpassed the United States as the island's number one investor
with US$1.8 billion invested in projects in Jamaica, adding 10,000 to the
country's room count and creating close to 40,000 jobs.
So what makes Jamaica appealing to Spanish hoteliers?
Spain's Fundacion Carolina arranged a fact-finding trip for a group of local
journalists so that they could better understand the thinking behind the recent
surge of Spanish investment in Jamaica.
Adviser for tourism to Mallorca's Chamber of Commerce,
Antoni Munar explained: "Four of the world's top hotel groups come from
Mallorca and of these four, two, namely Riu and IberoStar, have hotels in
Jamaica. Right now the Baleares Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and
Formentera) is saturated-there is no more space for hotel development so many
hoteliers have to look outside of Spain. Jamaica is a very good market. It has
developing infrastructure, close proximity to North America, a strong brand
that is recognised throughout the world and has both a mid market and high-end
market component. Jamaica makes good business sense."
Spain now attracts 60 million visitors a year and, according
to Munar, 13 million visitors a year come to the Baleares Islands. He further
added that the Baleares Islands contributes euro 11,000 million in tourism
income to Spain, which is 2.7 per cent of the country's tourism earnings.
Most of the Spanish hotels in Jamaica are family operated
with the children of the founders now at the helm and employing a more global
view to tourism. Well capitalised and enjoying excellent relationships with
Spain's leading banks, they feel no need to list on any of the world's leading
bourses, choosing instead to plow earnings back into new hotel projects across
the world.
Sabina Fluxá Thienemann is vice president of Grupo Iberostar
and the daughter of its founder. Iberostar was formed in 1956 a travel agency before
diversifying into the cruise ship sector and other businesses. It recently took
the decision to focus solely on hotel development.
It will however be launching
a real estate business aptly named Iberostate. Here the company is buying plots
of land to develop residential units within the surroundings of its hotels.
This new business arm will operate in the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Mexico
and Marrakech in Morocco.

this is good news for jamaica......most other types of business are running the other way out of jamaica.....buying a condo in jamaica this I gotta see......good luck and check gun registration laws you will need one.....the government must have really dropped their pants on this one....I am glad the D.R. does not have to anymore....but that is why we are getting a better class of hotel now....we can thank these same operators for giving us the foundation in all inclusive
From: United States, NJ
Is this good or bad news? . I saw that coming long ago. Don't forget Jamaica is an English speaking nation and are ahead of DR on Hotel operation and work in general. So ,Anglos- Canadians,Britz,Australians and Americans are flowing to Jamaica ..
Good move for the Spaniards investors, no matter how expensive the land aquisition is in Jamaica ,it will pay off at the end.The DR better get its act together and start opening schools in the Hotelerie business if they are to compete with Jamaica instead of all wanting to be politicians and presidents of something w/o qualifications, just because they belong to a political party will not do when it comes to private enterprice. You either know your job or you don't.
Don't be another Venezuela where they had to import CUBANS & COLOMBIANS because the nationals don't know or don't want to work relying on the OIL which is at the hand of the STATE. Venezuelans youth are into (journalism) or politics in a totalitarian state to be.

MRThelmoAlmeydaRancier: I'm trying right now to "Translate" your "subliminal" "Non sense message", Let's see; I'm always the racist, non sense, xenophohic person in all these forums so far according to my fan club.
What "English" language has to do with this "Spanish" corporation going to "Jamaica" , I'm being already in so many different resorts all over Dominican Republic and it's funny because most of the staff speak many languages already to please most of the different classes of tourists that We have coming to my country.
I'm being in Jamaica already and they harass You a lot more than Dominican Republic selling You stuff in the resorts, sometimes they even try to offer You "Weed" which I hate a lot "I DON"T DO DRUGS"

Rubi im not going to comment on your nonsense posts regarding Jamaica and your supposed resort superiority of the DR's as compared to theirs however let me just clarify that Canadians, Americans, Brits, and Australians all refer to nationality and nationality has nothing to do whatsoever at all with race. And yes Rubi your fan club appears to be growing by the minute. lol.

Mr Porfirio Rubirosa, Dominican lover boy.
If you read my posters correcly instead of been so nationalistic and trying to be the DR Einstein.
I said very clear according to the subject matter above, the Spaniards are locating near the Aglo-Saxon market.
If you gave your brain a brake you will noticed it is to attract EUROS & $$$$$,not devaluated pesos or for DR tourist exclusevely like yourself once a year by christmas. When I said Colombia is because I know since have been there numerous times. You should try it you might like it.
As far as you coming across DR citizens that are multi-liguist is very hard to believe since it takes them for ever to learn English in the USA. The staff you are refering to must be foreigners. So what is there for the locals?
I am as Dominican as you or more, but i have noticed on your previous posters as racial but you can't B.S. me since I know where you are coming from ,and am not HAITIAN decsendant but w/o them DR would starve.

I'll say, "vaya con dios", If you have not been to Kingston, you will find that is the most freighting place after the Bronx at 3 AM, any tourist advisor will tell you that, how about investing some $$ in North and South of Haiti, it will be money well spend if not in the short term surreally in the mid to long term.
From: Haiti
santanar is right, those regions in Haiti would be excellent investment opportunities. It would be money well spent in my opinion because of the yields that might follow in terms of profit and because of the untapped market in Haiti. Time for a new country to gets its due. I have nothing against Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans but those countries are old school destinations. Even the DR I have to admit is in the new era. Time for the DR to continue to make its mark in the tourism industry and for Haiti to begin its path. It's Hispaniola's era.....

There is a problem with this. First, it great that my parents homeland is sparking such interest for the Dominicans to invest in the country. However, the Dominicans aren't hiring the native islanders to work in these hotels they are hiring Dominicans to come over to the island-that's sickening. Second, this type of action should not surprise us as Dominicans don't even see their neighbors Haiti as they were once one Hispanola as their equals. They mistreat the Haitians within their own country and do not offer equal economic benefits. Third, the Jamaican government is corrupt as the should not allow such a movement without taking their people into consideration which is why I admire and respect Fidel Castro.
You may wonder how do I know all of this, well I have many family and acquaintances within Jamaica that's furious that these jobs aren't being offered to them.
