SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic’s tourism industry grew 5.9 percent in March compared with the same month last year, and 1.1 million visitors arrived in the first quarter.

Tourism minister Felix Jiménez said last month’s arrival of Canadian and U.S. tourists grew 9 and 7.4 percent respectively, whereas flow from England, Belgium and Spain also posted growth.

The official said among Dominican Republic’s new tourism markets are Russians, Mexicans (12 percent), Ecuadorians (103 percent) and Peru (27percent). "In general, during the past month of March 389,075 nonresident foreigners arrived at the country by air."

Eases stance on Tourism regulatory body

In another topic Jimenez suggested new proposals to ease his position on the bill creating the National Tourism Development Institute (Indetur).

Although the official defended the private sector’s involvement in Indetur’s Governing Board, he said the agency wouldn’t have the power to negotiate public debt.

The Tourism chief spoke in a press conference Monday afternoon after meeting for around 4 hours with the Chamber of Deputies Committee to study the bill, which forced the other representatives of the industry to hastily explain their views.

Tourism not reaching the poor
Miguel Ceara-Hatton, of the United Nations Development Program and coordinator of the Human Development reports for the DR, highlighted the fact that the DR has many challenges ahead if tourism is to translate into progress for the poor of the Dominican Republic. He said that new data that is just becoming available because of in-depth research into development indicators at municipal level has made it possible to compare national indicators with indicators in the leading tourism areas, Puerto Plata and La Altagracia (Punta Cana). He says that the findings show that human development indicators lag behind in these two provinces, which are home to the largest concentration of hotel rooms.

maybe i am not so crazy, after all. i said all of these things in several postings, but only served to anger certain sectors. tourism is the number one money earner in terms of hard currency, but is the most exclusuionary resource we have in this country. foreign speculators , which some folks here like to call ïnvestors¨, and their dominican sell out enablers, have turned the industry into a bonanza for a few wealthy types, with the majority deriving little or no benefit. it is not surprising that the fortunes of those on the perimeters of punta cana, la romana and puerto plata are bleak. the industry serves to offer marginal opportunity to locals. the majority of the major players are all foreigners, with locals holding menial, subservient positions. the country is absolutely crawling with foreign administrative personnel, all living pretty nicely, thank you!. the old ronald reagan policy of trickle down economics is in full swing. the theory is that if the foreigners get even

QUOTE: you are the type of individual who believes that any methodology for making money is acceptable.

Yet he can't, for the life of him, see how the new Metro will enhance tourism and help the country make money.

I do an awful lot of travelling. One of the things that I tend to notice is the travel brochures hyping the "Pais' clean, efficient Metro", or "the best way to get around New York is the subway", or "the way to deal with London's chaotic traffic is the London Tube" or "Berlin's U-Bahn is a model of efficiency". These things not only impress, but draw tourists.

Yes you can dwell on all the other things that need to be done. Poverty...it has always existed and in all likelihood will continue to exist for some time to come. Foregoing the building of the Metro will not erase it overnight. Crime likewise. I know that the country should put its priorities in order, and right now, the fierce competition with other Caribbean islands for tourism should be one.

Goulet, i retract what i said about you being a supporter of slavery. maybe that is extreme..however, on the issue of black people selling out their fellow blacks into slavery really pisses me off. revisionists seek to assert that black people are equally to blame, because they helped to round up slaves for sale. well, it is not as though africans were holding a garage sale on captured opponents, when some Europeans happened by the coast on an afternoon regatta. europeans started the thing, just as they colonised every country they could, and stole what they could. history on slavery and colonisation cannot be re written. and it continues in a more benign guise today. sorry if i get angry, but the thing i hate most is exploitation, and there is just too much of it around. i do not side with mugabe´s actions, but i cannot say i do not understand his anger. maybe if some of your ancestors had been lynched, you would be angry too!!

Goulet, let us get a few things clear about the situation in america and the political arena. Jeremiah Wright is just a convenient scapegoat in the political cycle, which has its inevitable endings. before the campaigns are over, the republicans will resort to the one fail-safe method of sabotaging the outcomes: inject race into things. remember Willie Horton? i can guarantee you that the preponderant majority of americans have not heard Rev. Wright, and most of those who have heard have not listened. it is no different from Iraq; 75% of americans agreed with Bush to invade Iraq, but only 11% knew where Iraq was on a map of the world. i think Obama is a bum...he is an unprincipled opportunist who threw Wright under the bus to save his own ass. he should have told white america to stop being the eternal paternalists that they have always been. always telling you who to listen to, who to associate with, from whom to take your intellectual direction. i am sick of people trotting out

Mitt Romney belongs to a church, which had in its teachings, until very recently, the tenet that black people were cursed and not allowable into heaven except as slaves. yes, a part of their basic teachings: not the opinionated rant of some maverick disciple. yet, no one in white america asked him how he chose to be a member of an avowedly racist religion. they actually defended his right to "religious preference and privacy". soooo transparent!

Goulet, i am not an antrhropologist, and i try never to dabble in subjects with with i am unfamiliar. Rev Wright makes the observation that there are cultural differences between the races, and that is undeniable. one simple example: none of the black folks i have known in my sixty plus years have ever put their parents in old folks homes, to be cared for by strangers until their deaths. we do not consider our infirm antecedents as burdens, but the objects of care and devotion. caucasians, on the other hand, find their wobbly fathers to be obstacles in their path to "fulfilment", and get them out of the way. i could go on forever in giving examples of how we differ in cultural terms. we have the same biology, and, by and large, the same aspirations, but are very different creatures. that does not mean that i support seperatism.

Goulet, putting one's parents in old folks homes has nothing to do with economics...well, yes it does. you might call me rev wright before this is over, but the difference is where the races place money on their scale of importance. caucasians find it more important to remove the impediment of sick family members, so they can make money with less fetters. black folks place money on a lower rung, believing that they should give back to those who gave to them. this is why, as laughable as it may appear, numerous black athletes and entertainers have a crew of hangers-on, parasites who have no apparent value. yet these people are well taken care of by the successful brethren, who saw them as childhood friends. that is why guys like mike tyson have no money: they gave it all away. similarly, if you get sick in the DR, the people who visit you in the hospital, and take care of you, and bring you soup and flowers, and clean your apartment for your return home, are all Dominicans who do not

and have no grasp of things academic. you have justly managed to germinate a mountain of contempt towards you on this forum, since you contribute nothing but misery. as one poster observed of you ¨goulet, you are like a high pitched noise which resvolves in my head¨.but i am hopeful that one day, before the Savior returns, you might actually contribute something intelligent, instead of your CNN -style loops.....slimy race card from the bottom of the deck....uber racist....grassy knoll....global warming nazis...did rush limbaugh program you? if he did, you should let him know that it is time for an update. the same old bumper sticker phrases are wearing thin, along with the patience of most of the readers of conscience who have a brain. get thee hence, Goulet, and go read a book or two. you know what books are, don´t you? i am sure you have seen them on TV!

yes, Goulet, i am sure that in your mind apartheid was a better way of life for the black folks in zimbabwe. as i said before, you seem to have given a pass to people like pik botha, george wallace, ian smith, cecil rhodes, and the rest of your philosophical fellow travellers. the only people you trash on this forum are black activists. but remember, goulet, that these guys did not invent racism; racism invented them. you maginalise slavery ,because black chieftains sold their own to white slavetraders. well, if you take that foolish approach, you can also marginalise the horrors of hitler against the Jews, because some Jews were collaborators with the third reich. but i guess that reason and analysis means nothing to you; all you do is to spout unfounded opinions, which have no sustainable academic basis.

still using the same tired old lines. nobody said that Obama was not black enough..just another figment of your dementia. if you could comprehend, you would understand that i meant that he should not have to answer to anyone for his ecclesiastical associations; mitt romnney was not importuned to answer for mormon teachings. then again , why do i bother with you? i have never resorted to violence in any situation, but you are the type of person who, if you were made to look down the barrel of a nine, i would understand why. your sense of humor comprises childish taunts and harrassment, and for that some guys get wasted. there are people who do not abide that nonsense. but then again, you are tough from a distance; in Brooklyn we call guys like you PUNKS. jive -ass cowards, who pester people with childish behaviors. i wonder why you have lived in so many places, but the term persona non grata¨ quickly comes to mind.

you are criticizing a whole religion ie Mormons ...before your time Romneys father made a stand for the rights of certain people before it was a fashion Mormons are productive members of the community...Rev Nut Case says white people created HIV.....and their brains are different etc etc you know Romney did not get married or have his children baptized and dedicate books to some one like that then turn around and say he never heard him say that stuff.....Oprah sure did and she got the hell out of there...and that is why nobody could say that about romney he has a history he did not go to clan meetings ..and speaking of intellects yours is aggressively mediocre...your puffed up pretensions to intellectuality are a dead give away to your insecurity.....every time you call anyone names you refer to their intellects or IQ....I would be very careful ..you may have fooled a bunch of hayseeds but you could not survive in the game with your attiude even if you "only had a brain".TIN MAN

"By the late '60s, however, this bitterness and ethnic narcissism were retooled as a form of militancy, then of black "pride" and, later, of black indoctrination masquerading as scholarship. When militants with the biggest mouths found out the difference between hot lead and hot air, they devoted themselves to the latter. They headed to colleges and universities and, once there, they fanned out into history, sociology and political science. What has remained in place is a defeatist line that tends to preach inevitable failure for black people who are doomed to be crushed under white racism." dred read this it is right up your sidewalk it picks you out of the crowd you pompous loser

no Goulet, humanitarianism is what makes you throw up, not phony humanitarianism. i am sure you send congratulatory greeting cards to all enlightened slumlords who evict indigent widows because the rent is a day late and 5 dollars short. did you consider throwing a cocktail party and fundraiser for the guys who dragged that man behind the pickup truck? did you march for the cops who shot Amadou Diallo 41 times, even though the guy only had a cellphone on his person? how are your lynch mob buddies these days? laid any flowers at the grave of your boys like george wallace lately? how are pik botha and ian smith? any afterlife reunions planned wit them? maybe you are too busy despising humanitarianism and rooting for your sweatshop brethren to pay those guys notice. good luck in all your ventures; hell, you all rolling in high clover; there is alot of carrion for you to eat, what with all the people who have been laid waste due to the mortgage meltdown. now you can buy their houses

for pennies on the dollar, just the way you like it.heck, it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good. so, when you can take time out from buying food stamps from desperate indigents and selling them at a profit, all the while decrying the morality of the sellers, you can turn off the heat on some old lady who owes you 5 dollars interest on the loan you gave her at 100% interest. get thee behind me, Satan!
