SANTO DOMINGO.- The first direct flight from Moscow landed at international Punta Cana International Airport (east) Sunday, after a Russian airline Transaero Boeing 747-400 covered a distance of 11,000  kilometers, flying 12 hours.

The tow-story jet fly a total 352 passengers; 11 in first class whose seats can also become beds; 56 in business, and 285 in economy. The aircraft will join the fleet of the company’s 29 planes.

Transaero representative in the country Ruscan Pirogov, and Dominican Tourism Promotion Office (OPT) director in Russia, Galina Lyssenko received the flight, accompanied by journalists.

The days of the flights from and to Russia are Thursday and Sunday although according to Pirogov, “starting November we’ll be flying three or four times per week from Moscow and possibly from other airports.”

Transaero began operations in the country on December 30, 2003 with a flight every two weeks, using a Boeing 767-300, with a capacity for 230 passengers.

Wonder how the Cubans feels about this? one would think that Cuba would be the first choice for a Carribean destination given their historical ties. Maybe the Russians have had enough of socialist hospitality. Notice how the Russian airline uses Boeing 747-400's, the latest varient of the jumbo jet and not a Soviet era jetliner.

zak325, do you have any data regarding the number of russians who vacation in cuba? is there evidence to suggest a precipitous decline in tourism to cuba by russians? just asking...

No, I have no data regarding the number of Russians who visit Cuba as opposed to the other Islands of the Carribean. My point is that with the increasing wealth of Russians, they have more options. A past article stated that more russians were visiting Jamaica, which is more expensive than Cuba or the Dominican Repuplic. It is a common human trait that when people have more to spend, they no longer want the less expensive choice. Russians, in my opinion, are some of the most status concious people around. Why go to Cuba? that's so yesterday!, they will think. This is a trend the Dominican tourist officials should encourage.

Perez, they are not coming here for the people; none of the euros and north americans are. their motives, in the main, are less noble than that. they are here because of economic reasons, or are leaving home for reasons known only to themselves, if you get my drift!
