SANTIAGO.- Cibao airport will be the front door on the Government’s new tourism promotion plan to attract some of the around 50,000 private planes that’ll visit the Caribbean region every year.
Those airplanes will have as destinations the country’s numerous tourist resorts, said James Parker, main United States private aviation tourism promoter for this area, when he was received in the terminal by a Santiago commission. It’s his first visit to all international and domestic airports to weigh how to attract planes.
The specialist’s visit to Santiago is part of the plan by the International Civil Aviation Institute (Idac), the Tourism Ministry and the Airports Department to present the first Dominican tourism pavilion on July 27, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. A Dominican Republic high-level commission will attend the activity.
Parker said Santiago’s Cibao International Airport was chosen the national front door for its support of the decree which exempts private airplanes from paying landing, parking or lighting fees.
The initiative, which makes Cibao Airport the first terminal to provide new areas for private flights, aims to promote tourism to the region, especially Santiago, that has new hotels and Centro Leon, an international level cultural site.
“The objective is to show the kindness that Ciudad Corazon gives and opens the doors to general aviation in this terminal,” said Rafael Eduardo Molina, of Civil Aeronautics.
The tourist destinations the planes plan to visit starting October are El Catey and El Portillo (Samana), Punta Cana, La Romana, and Puerto Plata.

Oh I see instead of using one of the many airports that would be closer to their destination ie all our other airports ...you will force them to go to Santiago how nice ....maybe you are planning a building boom in the mountains for more hotels..... Why else would a private plane want to park in Santiago then proceed to you name it

We will be landing in the DR with our private aircraft in Santiago, and las Americas for a one week stay.
I will inform you of any hassels the government offricials will give you for fees such as landing and parking.
DR law may have exempted you but do the officials know that.
Lets See and I will report back.

Do you think that the kind of people that go on vacation in the DR want to go to Santiago ? please that is not reasonable...all overnight transiting aircraft I dont think that even works.....we are overairported.....and they are very expensive to maintain

Why not? Santiago has alot going for it, in particular its night life. Non-Dominicans and indeed non-latins that I know off who have visited Santiago have nothing but positive things to say. It's a great city with beautiful, vibrant people.

Ciby good for you chamber of commerce loves you .....I like Santiago very much and did not mean to make it sound like a negative but people who own private planes are usually on their way to somewhere well somewhere else....Actually in the Caribbean they are on their way to their yacht somewhere and somewhere usually like the Virgin islands or Antigua or even Puerto Rico because people on yachts dont like long open sea crossings...and if not on a yacht then to a super deluxe hotel resort the type that are just beginning to come to the DR ....these types dont go to all inclusives...So build some fabulous golf courses and some Spas in the hills and you will get private planes

I'm so tired of hearing that everything needs to accomondate non-dominican tourists. What about the hundreds of thousands of Santiagueros that live abroad and visit often??? We don't count? Our needs are a luxury?? It's very easy to post here and not know the reality of traveling 4 or 5 times a year to the DR. It used to be HELL if you were from Santiago or the central reagion in the past. The trip was horrible not just because of the drive home either from POP or SDQ, but the crowding and madness of these two hell hole airports and their staff. Now days I have the confort to land in STI and get home in 30 minutes. In these times of rising fuel costs it makes more sense than ever to have this airport as vibrant as it is. I hope you posters realize that a lot of the eurotrash tourists that visit all those all inclusive resorts dont spend one peso. Meanwhile we visit local businesses and inject lots of needed money that for the most part stays in the country and in the region.

I have to agree that Santiago is a great airport. I just heard that some US Airlines are suspending flights to STI. What a shame. I hope they reconsider and return to SAntiago. I flew into to Santiago last March and was impressed. Customs, etc was fast and efficient. The airport had great facilities and most important it was a quick ride to my destination. The city of Santiago seems to be having a great economicboom and this should help its airport.

Dominican Yorks are not the target audience. Hell you ain't gonna go anywhere else so who cares a whit. You also don't spend tourism dollars. You stay with the family and just spend all your money trying to impress the relatives with gifts:)

Without our remittances the Dominican economy would be in WAY WORSE shape...and do you honestly think we don't spend money or invest out there?..nonsense....have more respect for your countrymen that live abroad.
