New York.– Combinations of consumer disgust and rising prices have cost the travel industry over $26 billion in the last year. This total includes losses that have been estimated at $9 billion for airlines, $6 billion for hotels, $3 billion for restaurants, and $4 billion for governments.

The situation is so dire that no less than Dr. Alan Greenspan was called in to advise the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Greenspan said the long term outlook for Caribbean tourism was positive.

However, short term the Caribbean economy is directly linked to the U.S. dollar, which he predicted would continue to decline against the currencies of developing countries.

The Caribbean (host of over 15 million visitors last year) is four times more dependent on tourism than anywhere else in the world. In Jamaica and the Bahamas the highest levels of government are keenly aware of the fact that the travel industry controls the economic forecasts of their countries. Some Caribbean governments are already discounting airport fees by as much as 45 percent to offset the rising costs being passed on to the consumer.

American Airlines transports 60 percent of visitors to the Caribbean and has announced significant cuts to its services in the Caribbean with more cuts expected.

American announced plans to cut the daily flights into San Juan from 93 to 51 by September 2008. Flights into Santo Domingo, Antigua, St. Maarten, Aruba and Samana will be gone.

Holy Nazarene, if the industry is already taking billion dollar hits in various segments of the business, what will happen after the September departure of AA?

The industry is too timid and servile to take on or stand up to the filthy oil speculators, the main cause of their current problems, so it will most likely look to operational adjustments, like sheep, to deal with the adverse situation.

There isn't a ghost of a chance that these petty and cowardly operational changes will relieve the problem of speculative oil prices.

Sheep! Counter attack the speculators who are screwing you.

If you get right legal and economic help, you can even get your money back.

Don't mess with rotten free market scum, slimy cappie garbage, or GOP filth.

Belial just can't seem to stay on track with his "HATE CAMPAIGN" against thatwhich drives the World Economies, CAPITALISM.
Now he is saying that the various ancilliary segments of theWorld Economiy should bring to bear their forces to bring about a reduction in the price of a barrel of oil, thereby stabilizing the downward trend of tourism in the various geographical areas of the World.
What he is really advocating is creating pressure from the Capitalists of one segment to force another segment to "toe the line".
He really can't seem to focus on anything positive.
I would say he is a "REACTIONARY" who looks at the world through "dark glasses" and therefore any commentary from him is steeped in fallacious reasoning based on faulty analysis of all circumstances.

He is completely NEGATIVE in his every remark.

rossbuildrsinc, I'll tell u what's wrong by describing the experience my significant other and I had a few weeks ago. Our plan was to stay for a month, but we cut our trip short because in reality, we didn't really feel welcome. First, tourists arriving to the country are slapped with a mandatory $10 fee for absolutely no reason. Second, instead of receiving tourists with a warm welcome, they get hit by a wave of immigration inspectors begging for money. Third, on top of all that, your luggage gets lost in the airport, only to re-appear two days letter with a few items missing. Fourth, all items are overpriced for tourists. Who in the right mind would by a can of coke (regularly less than $1) for $3 dollars at the airport ? Or a $1 dollar bracelet for $7 dollars at the Conde. In general, tourists are taken advantage of (or at least they try) and it doesn't make visitors feel welcome. If they are paying outrageous prices due to costs of fuel, why don't we make it a little easier?

US travellers to the DR are treated very well by Dominican Immigration and Customs officers .. it would be great if they were more fluent in English and other foreign languages .. for the benefit of the tourists .. other than that US travellers have very little reason to complain .. now lets look at the other side of this issue ..

Dominican travellers to the US are treated horridly .. they get finger printed .. subject to long delays while their luggage is checked for contraband .. asked all kinds of ludicrous questions by the racist morons from Customs and Border Protection .. who think all Dominicans and brown skinned people must be drug smugglers ..

Dominican travellers to the US must also endure a long, expensive and humiliating visa application process .. that begins by standing in long lines and stifling heat at the US consulate on Maximo Gomez .. mountains of documents .. endlessly long and frustrating waits .. poor service .. more humiliation .. if they are lucky they get a visa and are ready for the next humiliating process .. that of surviving a US Port of Entry ..

None of this humiliation awaits a US traveller to the Dominican Republic .. all they need is a ticket .. a passport and $10 for the tourist visa .. no humiliation .. no frustration .. and yet they complain .. complain .. complain ..

FIrst, sangwong, the $10 tourists pay in DR are NOT for tourist visas...it's basically a "tourist tax". You simply form a line, purchase a tourist card for $10, and you give the card to the immigration officer while your passport is stamped. It has NO USE whatsoever. Second, my friend, you're comparing apples and oranges. Dominicans forming long lines to go to the US do it because of NEED. They are so desperate to get out of this corrupt country and give their kids a better life that they are willing to subject themselves to such humilliation. On the other hand, tourists arriving in DR don't HAVE to go to DR. They do it for pleasure, which menas that if they are not treated like they want they will be going somewhere else next time. This isn't an issue for the US because their economy is not tourist-based. We Dominicans, on the other hand, depend on the service indutry and tourism. If bad service leads to no tourism then the country is screwed.

Dominican should be allowed to enter the US at will .. no questions asked .. they contribute to the US economy by doing valuable work .. they send money home to help their families .. contrary to what the US Government thinks .. Dominicans do not want to stay in the US .. most want to accumulate savings which can be used to buy property and homes in the DR .. it is the dream of most Dominicans to retire in their own country .. because it is not easy getting old in the US .. so let's do away with the humiliating visa process .. let Dominicans travel to the US without visas ..

Hate to rain on your summation, but the DR has a long history of massive corruption in the area of documentation that is submitted to the US Consulate for the requested visas.
And WHY should Dominicans be allowed to enter the US, or any other country, for that matter, just because they're Domnicans? There is no reason that I know of that would qualify the average Dominican for"free entry" into the "land of the Big BX" without proving that they are financially capable of an extended visit.
Ovaer 90% of those who stand in the lines outside the Consulate are there for applying for an Immigrant Visa (Green Card) and due to the overwhelming number of applications, just can't be serviced in a single visit.
Ask yourself how many of those poor souls have more than an 8th grade education (DR style), speak passable English, have an unblemished police record, qualify for something more than an "entry job", and will keep the authorities up to date with their proper address in the US.

Granted, many of the applicants just want the opportunity to pursue a better life. But, between their limited English comprehension, the myriad of regulations that govern immigration, many get deported because of just that; failure to comply with the instructions. Then many just don't realize that the US has a "zero tolerance" for those who violate it's laws, unlike life in the DR.
Life in the US "ain't all peaches and cream" for one who wasn't raised there andthe mores of US society are very different, requiring even more adjustment to an already pressurized existance within the Dominican communities there. Too many turn to criminal activities as an easy way out of a very competative existance, much to their consternation when caught andultimate deportation.
While I symapthise with these people, neither can I condone some of their activities which lead to their being deported and giving others from the DR a bad name.
That's reality.

"Dominicans should be allowed to enter the US at will"

In a utopian world, yes that may be what we all want. However, the reality is that if all Dominicans were allow to go to the US "at will" there would be no one left in the island. Would they rather live in a country that they love, but offers nothing but dirty politics as the only way to get ahead in life....OR...would they want to go to a country that they can learn to love where their future is dependent on the content of their character and sacrifice? I think the answer is obvious, and even though most Dominicans abroad would LOVE to go back to the island, they know it would be a huge diservice to the future generations.

As I've said before if you're not a politician you have no reason to be in DR right now. If you're in DR, I suggest you wait in line with everybody else to get a VISA and therefore, significantly improve your chances of a better life. A VISA doesn;t make a better life certain, but it sure increases the probability.

Well, now. We finally know just what Mr. Sangwong is, don't we.
He's a wannabe tough guy who came to the DR to bolster the local commies and show his stuff at being tough and obnoxious. He seems to think that is being real cool.
He came out of the blue with his blistering commentaries, threatening to "duel" us all, and on top of that, expected to be welcomed.
My cosensus is that if this is thetype of person theextreme left has to offer, then we are in a world of hurt and a return to the days of Trujillo and his goon squads. Or, Saddam, Stalin, Mao and Hitler with their "secret police" who murdered millions of their own citizens to rid themselves of their opposition.
Do we want that?
I think not !
We don't want any Sociopaths running the government. We have enough self-serving idiots doing that now and don't want to trade one set for another of the same ilk. At least the current ones are known to us.

TubercleBaccilus .. it fits you perfectly .. you are not too far removed from that little microsopic fiend that is infesting billions around the world .. Saddam was an important part of US policy against Iran .. we gave him billions to build up his lethal arsenals .. we bought his oil so that he could build the SUPERGUN supervised by Gerald Bull .. a piece of artillery powerful enough to hurl conventional and nuclear explosives into Tel Aviv and Jerusalem .. Trujillo was also an important part of US policy in the Caribbean .. the US government looked the other way as Hitler massacred millions of Jews and Gypsies in Europe ..

Your English is simply horrendous .. "Your consensus"? How can you have a consensus all my your lonesome cowboy? It takes at least two to have a consensus. So you must have mutated into a binary? TubercleBaccilusJeckyll and TurbercleBaccilusHyde .. that explains the confusion ..

GC;
The man isn't grinding me down by any means.
I'm just tired of reaading his$hit on these pages. Even though we know he issnickering over the matter, the continuation of written conversations with him just isn't worth the bother. The man hasa one-track mind(??) and his useage of words makes me sick to my stomach.
He isn't going to change his tune, no matter what is posted.
He obviously was bounced off a bridge abutment as a baby andwas rendered deranged as a result.
I think he and Belial are in direct communiction with each other andhave gone overboard with the libelous and slanderous statements that can be issued forth with immunity. Either that, or they are one and the same. Either way, they're cut from the same cloth.
