SANTO DOMINGO. - The new Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia on Tuesday said he’ll meet with all the representatives of the Dominican tourism industry, to present his plan work and vision, and affirmed he’ll apply and continue the plans of outgoing minister Felix Jiménez, whose frequent bouts with controversy made him one of the least popular Cabinet officers.

Garcia, noted for his soft yet firm approach in his previous posts, said he’s committed with the government policies for the industry’s growth and consolidation, in president Leonel Fernandez’s administrations.

Javier Garcia praised the levels of development reached during Jiménez’s tenure. “In general, we aim to maintain the climate of investments in the tourism sector, to work to increase the tourist arrivals to our country, because we are aware of this Ministry’s importance for the country, and our challenge to keep it on top, so it contributes to improve the levels of economic stability in Dominican Republic.”

In that regard, Jiménez said the number foreign tourists who arrived by air rose by 750,000 per year in the 2004-2008 period. “Only last year more than 4 million visitors arrived from an extensive variety of source markets.”

The whole country can't be a disneyworld for tourists. Manufacturing has to be expanded, Agriculture for domestic consumption extended, Education encouraged. These are other avenues for development. If you just rely on one ace in the hole, your'e bound to lose.

Keep in mind the popular cat-phrase: 'Global Warming'
It will eventually restrict international air travel. Unless the natives can afford all this malarkey you dream up, none of these resorts will survive. Thousands of empty hotel rooms, suites, and bungalows. And yes, empty golf courses, too! Because of empty skies, and empty stomachs........Pongase las pilas, compadres.

dreadlocks,

I just call them as I see them, mi pana!
Idon't have any beef with you. I just disagree on certain opions that you expressed previously; But I hold no grudges....Like the sayings goes: "Opions are like ....everybody has one". I try not to be vulgar, it's degrading and below my upbringing.

that having been said, Arsenio, keep the good stuff coming. i agree that your style is always civil. however, you and i see eye to eye on the issue of turning the country into disneyland and forgetting about other avenues of development. i maintain that tourism is too fragile to rest one's hopes on it, especially in the fast moving, unpredictable world of today. and "mi pana". that sounds so Trini!
