Miami.– Airline cutbacks could send Caribbean beachgoers elsewhere this winter.
This is a growing concern of tourism industry leaders as they
grapple with a double whammy of reduced air service and a slumping U.S. economy.
A reduction in air service –the only way for most Americans to reach the
Caribbean's white-sand beaches– could make the journey less convenient and
airfares more expensive, ultimately discouraging trips.
"Every seat that we lose is an opportunity for a tourist to come to the
Caribbean," says Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, president of the Caribbean Hotel
Association and co-chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Development Co.
For December, U.S. airlines scheduled 17 percent less service from the lower
48 states to the Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin
Islands, compared with December 2007, according to an analysis of OAG flight
schedules.
Service is down to the four most-served islands. In December, Puerto Rico and
the Dominican Republic will have 26 percent less service; Jamaica is down 15
percent, and the Bahamas down 10 percent.

arrivals is less important than the amount of money left behind and the growing quality of the product ...Less reliance on European charters and more short stay Americans..... more Ritz less Barcelo...remember there is no wheelbarrow manufacturing plant in this countrys future
From: United States
and, GC, i hope you are not saying that the amount of money left behind is going to increase. with the current dyspepsia in the US economy, there are less short stay americans coming here. i have several friends who used to come here several times per year, who have suspended visiting indefinitely, because of economic uncertainty in the states, and the extortionate cost of travel tickets. those who want to come can't even get a seat, what with the cutbacks.
From: United States, California, San Francisco, Treasure Island
dread if you had spent as much time traveling around to different islands during high season ...then you would know how expensive it really is.I mean 300 to 400 dollars a night average ...The DR is the new discovered bargain the contractions will be at these points as people look for and discover better value...Nothing will stop the snowbirds with money and they are still legion you will see ...the only problem will be lift as it is every year LIFT enough seats
From: United States
Gc, you confuse me. first you say that we are aiming for the high dollar tourists, the ones who go to the Ritz, as opposed to Barcelo. then you introduce the concept of "bargains ". since when do Ritz-Carlton types concern themselves with the price of rooms? the fact of the matter is that the country derives marginally more money from the rich as opposed to the middle class. true it is that the rich pay a heck of a lot more for their hotel room, but most of that money is repatriated, anyway. a very small percentage of the ultra expensive hotels are locally owned. and there is no study i have seen which indicates that rich people spend more money than poorer people on vacation. they may drink expensive booze, and eat high dollar dinners, but, since so much of that has an imported component, it does not translate to much of anything, except big numbers. benefits are a different story.
From: United States, California, San Francisco, Treasure Island
the larger contraction will be in the middle class ....thus making the tremendous value apparent...the Luxe nothing will stop them....I see it as the same as real estate the second home market here is still pretty strong among Americans here
