SANTO DOMINGO. - The Dominican tourism industry’s main problem is the lack of good highways that allow tourists to move easily and safely.
Ideally tourist zones and airports should be linked so visitors can move from one zone to another, said National Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores) president Haydée Kuret de Rainieri. “Listen, the visitor who goes to the East zone, to go to Puerto Plata and Samaná must return to Santo Domingo because there is no link.”
Another need is to apply the recommendations of the studies paid by the different hotel associations to detain the sprawl in tourism regions.
Kuret said it’s a visual problem because it relays a sense of squallor, disease and insecurity.
She said the obsolete system needs renewing to a more efficient process so the different permits can be gotten faster, in addition to a unified window. She said since tourism is a long term industry, its policies and regulations, such as an incentive law and density per hectare, must be in keeping with the times.
“We cannot change the game’s rules whenever we want. We must understand that the investments are done in a certain period and those policies and those regulations cannot be changed from one day to another.”

Build METROS!
From: United States
might she be referring to the word PLANNING? ain't gonna happen! not with the current crop of politicians. planning takes time. they want the comision today. it is like the METRO. bombardier told the government that a study regarding the feasibility of the metro would take years, so leo took his marbles and went to play elsewhere. i posted on the downside of the roads some weeks ago. people who live in countries with autobahns do not want to shudder unrelievedly while they go from point a to point b on a donkey track. they are used to going a hundred mile distance in an hour, and have no love for taking four hours from one tourist center to another, with the tour bus teetering on the edge of precipices. if they want that kind of excitement, they will go to Disneyworld or Great Adventure.

although it is miles away, i think we should be watching the goings-on in the stock market today. it seems like capitalism is going through some rough times. could be a bloodbath on wall street today. the repercussions could spread far and wide. even to the tourist industry of the caribbean. but GC does not think so. for him, all is rosy. the golf club gang will be sitting at the airports of the world on stand-by tickets, waiting to come and play 18 holes at cap cana...lets hope he is right.

Keyword in neocommie WWW charter member Dreads post is Capitalism....Dread prefers the Comrade Bob economic system and is cheering yes cheering and gloating as 14000 people at Lehman lose their jobs
From: United States
why are they losing their jobs, GC? do you know? instead of trying to blackball people with scurrilous accusations, try to figure out why the deck of cards is coming down. it is a failure of policy which caused this mess. had there been more regulation of the mortgage markets, this debacle could have been controlled, if not averted. do not lecture me about gloating as 14000 people lose their jobs. they lost their jobs because of the same policy that your candidate vows to continue. john mccain wants to have LESS regulation on business. he says it will make for JOB GROWTH. 14000 losses in one company does not constitute job growth. but you support the policies which cause job losses, then, disingenuously as usual, accuse people of celebrating failure. if you are enamored of the policies of economic know nothings, vote for them. but , when the crap hits the fan, do not resort to your usual tricks of deflecting blame. it is all too republican, and tired to boot!

juanb, these right wingers want to eat their cake and have it too. john mccain wants to cut taxes by 3.3 trillion, but fight wars on two fronts at the same time. he is going to pay for it, in part, by cutting out all 17 billion dollars worth of earmarks. so, instead of taking the upper tier tax rate back to the clinton days, when times were flush, and everybody had a job, and there was a budget surplus, he wants to give the rich more money in their wallets. then, when the crap hits the fan, GC says we are gloating. well, who gave us the reason to?IF YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE WHO admits publicly THAT HE DOES NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE ECONOMY, do not whine when the crap hits the fan. heck, even this week he said that 'THE ESSENTIALS OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY ARE SOUND" well, go tell that to Lehman Brothers!

The lovely Sarah Palin puts her HOOF in her SNOUT!
Source NYT:
"Obama aides mocked the McCain campaign after Palin on Friday misstated how much Alaska contributes to the national energy supply, a day after McCain said she "knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America."
Palin said Alaska provides 20 percent of the national supply, but the Obama campaign circulated an assessment by the nonpartisan FactCheck.org saying that that assertion is "not true, not even close," with Alaska providing 3.5 percent."

Just returned from a Punta Can vacation at one of the fine hotels. Has anyone ever heard of priorities like passable Roads, health needs of a third world nation and education? I cannot believe that the goverment is spending millions on a Metro that is not immediately needed.
The only road from the capital to Bavaro is a shame to the the Dominican people and very dangerous to take. Most of the roads in this country are totally neglected. Alot of pot holes were filled in just before the election. Now the potholes are back because of a quick patch job. When in the world will the government take care of needs before lining their own pockets?
From: United States
drronval, i once had the temerity to ask some of our noted cheerleaders for the hotel boom if there were adequate medical facilities in the bavaro/punta cana area.( in the event of a catastrophe.).that was before the bus crash that ended up with 22 deaths. you would have been shocked to read the insults with which they replied. these are elementary issues. foreigners, especially those from developed countries, are very anxious about medical treatment and facilities in the third world. some do not travel, only for that reason.yet, we hear how punta cana is the monte carlo of the caribbean, but you cannot get there because the main access road to it is a bridle path. what the heck is that?

Yes Dread Iam a cheerleader for this kind of tourism that this woman represents. She knows better than you or I what is necessary to move to the next level Her husband is a giant in Tourism concepts and internationally respected for socially and ecollogically correct hotels...... She said that that tourism in the country is evolving, from the first days of total dependency on the tour operators and all-inclusive resorts, to new niches such as luxury hotels and longer vacations at second homes. Kuret says better highways, services and the elimination of slums need to be priorities now for tourism to continue to develop.
Haydee Kuret de Rainieri is married to Frank Rainieri, who is responsible for the development of the east coast as a leading Caribbean tourism destination. Rainieri is a past president of Asonahores. Of the total 64,868 hotel room count (Asonahores), 29,318 are located in the East.,.......

dread nobody has acceptable medical facilities for tourists per se anywhere in the carribbean ....that being said here the DR and Puerto Rico maybe Cuba but other than that you better get an air ambulance to Miami just like the rest of the Caribbean.....If you get sick in the USVI you are gonna die and they look like they have real hospitals but they dont
