Havana.– Cuba was one of the most popular tourist destinations among Canadian vacationers during the first three months of this year, 100,000 more the amount who visited the Dominican Republic.

According to Statistics Canada, 505,000 Canadian tourists visited Cuba during the said period, accounting for a 35.4-percent increase compared to the first trimester of 2007, while 405,000 visited the Dominican Republic.

At the same time, more than 590,000 Canadian tourists travelled to Mexico during the aforementioned period, accounting for a 7.2-percent rise in contrast the first three months of last year. The three tourist destinations altogether were visited by more than 50 percent of all Canadian travelers abroad, excluding those who visited the United States.

Someday the US will drop its travel restriction to Cuba. Any guess what will happen to tourism here? If we are doing so poorly with all the tourist $$$ now, what will happen when it starts going to Cuba?

I guess you all should think about moving from the dominican after all without the population there how is lionel going to fill his sick pockets with cash if theres no one there to pay taxes

The title of this article say it all, "Canadians prefer Cuba and Dominican Republic" when Cuba opens up, they will still have the two option, with the exception that Cuba will be a little to occupied. Can anybody tell me the flying time from anywhere in Canada to Havana (only airport available) or Sto Domingo, Puerto Plata, Santiago or La Romana?

There are no restrictions from Canada to Cuba and still DR gets 405,000 tourist... Everyone assumes that if Cuba becomes libre they would completely dominate the caribbean.. THIS IS BULSHIT

Well this is one canadian that will always choose the dominican over cuba.....the people that go to cuba just dont know what their missing. DR is the best place to go for vacation in the world

Both Cuba and the DR are beautifull and unique places. People should go to both. What I can say is that people that come to the DR from the USA will not stop doing so when Cuba opens up to them. More Americans will go to Cuba, for sure, but the DR will still be the destination of many Americans. Look at Europe, Canada etc. They have no restrictions for travelling to Cuba and still many of them choose the DR over other destinations in the Caribbean (read Cuba).

It will take years to bring good hotels to cuba ....plus the amenities like golf ....Cuba is cheeseball all inclusive for ultra cheapies....you know rubber chicken eat and drink till you puke ....and please dont talk to the residents the secret police dont like it

Like I said before. if and when Cuba opens its doors to "full floodgate tourism", the DR will be just fine. Cuba and DR offer tourists different options and the types of tourism is very different. Besides people that have been coming to the DR will continue to come to DR regardless. Like someone already mentioned there are plenty of other nations that have no restrictions to fly to Cuba, but yet the tourists from those nations prefer to travel to DR. For example countries of the EC and Canda.
