Francisco Javier García, Oskar E. Arocha Noboa, Ramón Fadul and José De Los Santos.
Santo Domingo .- Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia visited the real estate project Punta Goleta, in Cabarete, in order to meet with local businessmen and reaffirmed the commitment to invest nearly US$1 billion to boost tourism in the area for the next five years.
Garcia also promised to take care of social and environmental aspects to keep Cabarete as the Caribbean Mecca of kiteboarding.

A billion US in a wind sport region, with a crappy sand beach to boot? Come on. No reliable electricity for the near future, no infrastructure (or very little). Who are they trying to fool? This is like the 1000 room Hot Springs Hotel in Canoa/Barahona? What kind of fantasy business plan has Tourism come-up with? Perhaps, they are using too much of lost loot from Paya.

A billion Dollars? Like one of the comments mentioned: "Happy laundering": It's an accurate assessment of the preposterous proposition. The whole world is on the brink of an impending collapse, and these four Caribbean Tycoons are contemplating an expenditure of astronomical proportions. There must be more to this endeavor than what meets the eye. One billion Dollars? Get outta here! There must be a better cause in the DR that can use these generous funds? A more pressing issue. Their rationale is; that if they build it they will come. In my opinion we're approaching (austere) Hard Times. They'll blow it and never knew why they lost it. The smart money is saying hold on to your last penny. How can these licenciados defy conventional wisdom? Unless they are sending the money to the 'dry cleaners'!

I like the idea of protecting the Natural Resouces, no matter what the circunstances are, nevertheless, I believe that that's too much money to spend in such as small place.
The DR needs to develop ecotourism activities all over the country, in order that the economic results benefit a larger part of the population.

Like everything stated in front of a camera, blha blha blha... never they will invest a "billion" in Cabarete not even in pesos.....
This is just show to keep the already HYPER inflated real estate prices up there, and keep those dreamers pay trough their nose.
Cabarete will go trough a serious recession in 2009-2012, all the so called mega projects have been stopped. No more black euro flowing as Europe prepares for a economic downturn and the USA is broke...
The train has left Cabarete, some late comers might believe the 1 billion statement but that wont last.

Disclaimer: I am a white Gringo considering permanent immigration to DR.
I read a lot of hypercritical comments on this site in particular negative comments about American efforts both commercially and governmental.
I have a positive opinion of Dominicans and this if 50% of the reason I am considering moving to the DR. I intend to revisit on a regular basis and expand my experience but my question is straighup!
In you the public's opinion, am I making a mistake thinking that the DR would accept me or would I be regularly pummeled with the regular anti-Gringo rhetoric I read on this site. I don't expect a red carpet but I also don't want to be singled out just because I am a Gringo. Any comments?

Hey gringo!!!
Well, I can tell you there is not any anti- gringo problems in the DR, we love americans here.
I have met lots of americans who live in the DR just like if they were domininicans.
So feel free to come over!!!!
