President Fernandez in Higuey's Basilica.
HIGUEY, Dominican Republic.- Representatives of Higüey’s different sectors met yesterday with president Leonel Fernandez in the Diocese, and asked him to look for solutions of Altagracia province’s main problems.
The officials accompanying Fernandez attending the mass to mark the Day of Our Lady of La Altagracia responded positively to almost all of the requests by Higuey’s residents.
They said next week there’ll be a provisional solution to the potable water shortage, street paving, sewage system and repairs to the roads that link the resort areas.
Altagracia’s business, communitarian and union representatives also requested the construction of dams and other infrastructure, said CASC union representative Manolo Ramirez.
He said the chief executive promised to rebuild the wells at Matilla and Sanate, to double the water supply from 200 to 400 gallons per second, which would help to ease the shortage, the province’s major problem.
Ramirez said dams would be built on the Sanate and Chavón rivers, which he said will improve the supply until a definitive solution is found to cover the water demand.

I always though the riches providence was Santo Domingo followed by Santiago.

What a load of crap...richest what?? Higuey is nothing more than a good old "pocigla" as my grand pa would say. They only have tourism, which leaves locals very little income, since most of the man power has been imported from other far off provinces to work in the hotels and Haitians for the construction jobs. Just like that other town, POP, which never developed from its tourism and only now is looking half way decent. If you are so rich, have your rich hoteliers build things for you, after all it is their tourist that will benefit from it.

Richest provinces? Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Altagracia, La Romana, that's my best guess, in that order.

If the richest province in DR has such acute fundamental infrastructure problems, then the poorer provinces must be sights to behold.

Old School Trinitario, I was surprise to know that the girls from Sanchez are the most beautiful in the DR. I went there on a day trip once and came right back, but guess I did not have time to really notice, nevertheless, I was under the impression that the women from the Cibao were alway in first place and I believe girls from Bani unofficially held that title for a while. I think it was either my mother or grandmother who use to say that girls from Bani has pretty faces but skinny legs. Never could really prove that. Anyway, please elaborate more on the Sanchez, Samana women, now that the secret is out, I am curious to know more about it. Don't keep them all to yourself, now !!!

And for those people that are confused about which area is the richest in the DR. The Cibao region, with Santiago as the capital is the wealthiest of all. It is the bread basket of the Dominican Republic, where traditionally most of the wealthiest Dominican families live. It has a rich fertile soil, producer of most of the agricultural products grown in the country, big tabacco/cigar industries, rum industries, mining industries: nickel and iron and a major producer of gold, as well as tourism in the North Coast. No other area in the DR has such a diversified combination of locally produced wealth which in most cases stays and is distributed within the country. Compared to Higuey the income generated is only tourism related and most of it leaves the country, with just a few crums left over for the Dominican native and Haitian laborer.

Yo....Old Sch Trini, I hear Ya man. Never been to Bani, but they sound a lot like the girls in Miami.
Very pretty, but shallow, empty, stuck-up and materialistic. That is why you can't beat a DR girl for nothing, if she likes you, can start a good conversation any time and anywhere and even if she didn't like you, she will still would give a guy the benefit of the doubt. She would give a guy a chance, no matter what and with out too much ado. I always said, MATENME CON MI DOMINICANA, COÑO !!!! Sanchez, here I come baby!!!
