Santo Domingo.- A total of 141,510 Dominicans who live overseas visited the country during the month of December. The total is 8,000 down compared to last year’s figures, when about 150,000 Dominicans visited their home country.

This reduction of visitors from the United States, Puerto Rico and Europe is attributed to the current global economic crisis.

Most of the visiting Dominicans came from the US, Puerto Rico, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Venezuela, Panama, Curacao, St Martin and Guadalupe.

Although some airlines serving the DR had to put on some extra flights, this was not on the same scale as in 2006 or 2007, according to information provided by the country’s airports. As usual, American Airlines provided the largest number of flights, followed by Jet Blue, Copa, Spirit and Continental.

Passenger complaints were down compared to previous years, registering fewer losses, damage to luggage and delays in receiving their luggage, thanks to a series of measures introduced by the airlines and airport management authorities.

There was also a reduction in robberies as a result of new security and supervision measures implemented by AMET, the National Police and the Tourism Police in the car parking areas and on the Las Americas Highway.

Lets see now.

If the population of the DR is about 7-8 million and there are 26,000. legal impediments against Domincian nationals from leaving the country that is about 3-4% of the total poulation add to that the 4,500 domincans repatirated every year then what do we have?

A violent corrupt society where crime and corruption reign high on the industrial scaleand are an acceptable means of furthering ones individual progress in life.

Gilly,

Ask these two geniuses, who probably don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, to show their faith in Lie-onel by coming up with 50% of the capital for your venture.

I am warning you this is a FAILED STATE! Unless you are connected at the highest levels and are willing to pay to play be very, very, very careful!

One of the easiest placed in the World to set up businesses. Also high chance of success. Many are tourist oriented and are verry successful. Also businesses like call centres catering for Europe, art, organic produce etc. etc. Economy is growing fast and many goods are in short supply so potential for manufacture. There are few formal barriers and labour is reasonably priced. It is possible to come here on toursit visa and stay for extended periods for citizens of most coutnries. Also in many areas there is good supply of rentable space. Free Trade Zones are also attractive for some businesses. Many businesses are expanding. Sometimes local competition is very strong - e.g. Nestle got chased out of ice-cream business here by local company

'Failed State' what ignorance - have you ever been to one? Huge number of Gringo businesses here thanks to superb infrastructure, excellent international air connections, closeness to important European markets, first rate tourism industry, excellent workforce, good judicial system, massive natural resources, In most lists DR is one of the top ten places in the World to invest. Property sales are booming, economy expanding - what more could anyone want. Kindof cold in Roumania just now!

So apparently you have a monopoly on the truth or are living in another dimension .

Contrary to your experience the overwhelming majority of Dominicans, feel this is a lousy government, running a deplorable administration that does not serve to benefit the majority of the people with the basic necessities of life.

Education!

Clean water!

Medicines and health care!

Public safety!

Electricity!

Affordable decent housing!
