SANTO DOMINGO.- Government officials say they have created a new refuge for birds, located on the northwest border of the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park (southwest), UPI reports.
The creation of the reserve extends protection in the region by 111 square miles, providing essential habitat protection for the globally threatened Bay-breasted Cuckoo (Pajaro Bobo) and threatened resident and migratory birds that depend on the Island of Hispaniola, the American Bird Conservancy said.
The Conservancy and its Dominican Republic partner, the Jaragua Group, prepared the proposal and conducted the biodiversity inventory work needed to justify the new area.
"With 30 endemic bird species, Hispaniola ranks high in global importance for bird conservation," said George Wallace, American Bird Conservancy's Vice President of Oceans and Islands. "With forests in Haiti virtually gone and an accelerated rate of forest loss in the Dominican Republic, many of these species face a bleak future - of the 30 species, 14 are ranked by (the International union for Conservation of Nature) as globally threatened."
Officials said the work to create the new protected area was part of a part of a broader effort to improve the management of Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, which is supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

with a name like silly bird I suppose you would at first I thought you were just a stuffed shirt with no sense of humor but now I see you probably have a sincere interest in the subject ......Look at it this way now that the subject has six posts some people might actually read the article ....Conservation of wildlife is an important issue as long as it is not at the expense of human beings who are much less fortunate than the conservationists . However that does not seem to be the case in this instance...Good Luck to you

POP is a dump danny00, inhabited by rats and bats. Only outside in the country side are there any birds left at all. Schools need to start teaching children not to kill everything they see just for the heck of it. Bahoruco is fortunate enough to be sparcely populated and very remote, this has assured the survival of many prestine areas. Lets just hope that the area is utilized for guided tours for bird watching that can bring these communities much needed income.

Plenty of birds in LT - no fear at all - come within 3 feet of you. But then PoP has been full of Americans who killed off the passenger pigeon. It is to be presumed that the US peoples like of shooting everything that moves has rubbed off on the PoP population - the solution might be for the Americans to go home to be wildlife wardens or architects who specialize in tearing down concrete jungles.........
