SANTO DOMINGO.- Groundbreaking for the long awaited Coral highway to be built at a cost of US$272 million will be headed by president Leonel Fernandez at 11 a.m. Friday, next to the Punta Cana International Airport (east).
The Public Works Ministry said the 70 kilometer long highway, to be concluded in around three years, will link Santo Domingo to major towns, airports and tourist destinations in the country’s east Region, where motorist can travel in less time, at a lower cost and with a lower risk of traffic accidents.
The company Constructora Autopista del Coral, S.A. will build the route first designed in the late 1990s, which will by-pass Higüey on the south and reach the airport at a clover leaf in the Eastern Tourist Boulevard. It includes three newbridges across the Chavón, Duey and Santa Clara rivers and several overpasses at railroad crossings, La Romana Airport, and the San Rafael del Yuma and Bayahibe roads.

is the metro going to ride in the center of the highway?

No. The Metro is a subway not a commuter rail. Hopefully in the future a commuter train can go from SD all the way to Punta Cana!

it would allow more riders less traffic but the people might steal the tracks for scrap metal

A light rail system is what the area needs and most of the right of ways exist on present roadways and Central Romana's private rail line. It is a good idea but will not get approval as it would open a can of worms with the bus sindicates.

Yeah this is exactly what the DR needs....another road costing millions of dollars to move the people with no jobs, no hope and no future to places they would have never seen...imagine if
Peeonel would have spent the money on social services or say PAID THE ELECTRIC BILL to the generators.......

where in the world there is not poverty? can anyone attest? and if you can, please answer, how to keep everyone happy as a president? if you can answer all this questions with respect and all honesty by producing true solving situations you will be the next president of the country of your choice.
From: United States
dondankar, there is poverty in every country. however, it is more excuseable in some than in others. countries with very few natural resources, and unfavorable locations, will generally be poorer than those who are favorably sited in both those aspects. the DR is very blessed to have mineral resources, natural beauty, and a favorable place in international shipping lanes. there is no reason, other than bungling, why it remains mired in inertia. south korea was a bomb crater after the korean war. it had a gdp less than ours at that time. yet, look at it today. do you really believe it is reasonable that this country, with maseratis and rolls royces lining the malecon on weekends, should be the only island in the caribbean that has not eradicated malaria? when others have done so since the 1970's?

Edward thinks Leonel craps gold nuggets and he probably collects them. This fellow is the head cheerleader for the ladrone who steals from his family yet not from him because he lives in Massachusettes sucking off the breast of the United States.
I truly do NOT understand this man at all.

the vermin of the broadband, Escott, never misses an opportunity to demean Dominicans. this loathsome creature offers this latest asinine remark
sucking off the breast of the United States.
Edward probably has a pay as you earn job, and Uncle Sam collects from his paycheck. which is more than can be said of gringos like Escott living here, who pay squat to the Dominican government when they cut their back door deals. the more he posts, the more he reveals the fact that he is a disrespecful embarrassment to humanity. but who can expect more from someone who is barely literate, anyway.

Dread ,the only reason why malaria is not eradicated is that we are cursed to be next to Haiti and unless someone fixes Haiti all the pestilence will find it´s way east.
Sort of like the high incidence of lice along the Mexican border not to mention the swine flu
From: United States
Pepe, you might very well be correct with that reasoning. if the DR attempts eradication, and Haiti does not, it is a fool's errand.

We need to ask for as much assistance as we can for Haiti because we will never be able to eradicate these diseases without an eradication effort on the Haitian side unless we fully shut down the border which would never happen!

this is it by 2013 you will see finally at least open hiways for all dr, and tourist, less adcidents.i hope they finishs this proyet as soom as posible, for future dominicans/as to enjoy travel safly.

Oddly enough...in Punta cana there lies a stretch of uncompleted roadway. When I first arrived here in 2005 it was a work in progress....now 4 years later....an abandoned project.
Much like big money developments...seems there is a lot of hype and no substance.
Time will tell.
From: United States
it is called "development by photo op", Mike. Leonel got all the media attention, his face on the front page, and the political mileage. 4 years later, 95 percent of Dominicans do not know that the road is incomplete. but Leo already got the political capital from the inauguration, which, sadly, he has squandered.
