"Visitors to a national park in Cancun could soon come face-to-face with life-sized sculptures in human form fixed in the seabed, as plans to create what could be the world's largest underwater museum start to become a reality.
On 19 November, four sculptures are due to be submerged in the Caribbean waters, off the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico's south-eastern state of Quintana Roo.
They will be the first of many hundreds of figures, which will be dotted around an area of the region's national park.

There are not many investors who do not think, firstly , about the profit in their own pocket .But they also take into consideration the stability of where they are investing , the availabilty of goods and labour and many other factors..I regard it as very good that investors pick the DR over other places .
The comments by Perception are ludicrous when so many people in this country want a job and are more than hgppy to be a domestic servant , nanny , gardener or similar ..it is far better than not having a job. Also foreign owners and tourists bring in foreign currency ..so where is the problem???
I do not know much about the north of the DR except around Cabrera and Playa Grande except that it is a serene place to live and very welcoming to investment .

I tell you what is the problem, Listen.... tour operators, travel agencies, tourist and investor pay for their vacation or invetment at their place of origin but the full amount never I mean "Never" make it to your country "Central Bank, an what are you doing its just selling what you have under your feets.

If some one pays US$500.00 for a 3 nights 4 days to stay down there, the balance its pay in full overseas and what the hotel exchange at your local bank it's just enough to cover expenses, profit stay abroad. Everybody its excited because someone its barely surviving with RD$10,000 about US$300 by today DR currency. If you found this to be the right direction to "Development", just as well start bulding you "Artificial Island" because you'll will need it soon.

Perception..yes most holidays are paid for at the country of exit so that all the DR gets is the bed tax ,the airport tax , the supply of goods and services to the hotel and some secondary benefits when the guests leave the hotels. There has been little more that the DR can get because it has not the sufficient capital for hotel chains or a proper Dominican carrier. Successive governments have decided that this revenue is better than none.
If the DR had not agreed to have this large tourist industry ,mainly on the best beaches,then the country would be very much poorer economically as the tourist industry is a large contributor to our economy. But we would still have the beaches . You can't have it both ways ..and to make it more difficult, most writers here do not want the DR to build up it's capital base ( the only quick way is by borrowing abroad) so Dominicans can invest themselves.

I might be wrong, but comparing what I lived 20 yrs ago and DR today, I mean, only those of us outside of your daily lives can smell what you can't notice. Half of the population from the inside towns had move to the capital, no to mention the lost of social values, respect for the law and all of this in the name of "Neoliberalism".

Ricardolito, in economics, there is a concept known as "net gain". you should know this, because you assert to being a "well trained economist". so, when you rhapsodise about the "benefits " we reap from tourism, such as jobs for maids , gardeners, shoeshine boys, and sanky pankies, pause a while to consider the inputs, or the externalities, if you will. it has beeen documented that out of each dollar factored into the tourist equation, 81 cents is repatriated to the core countries, while 19 cents stays here in the DR. but, we do not get that 19 cents without a concomitant cost. it is not the manifestation of the generosity of gringo. it comes about at great expense to the country, mainly in the form of opportunity costs. monies which could have been used for EDUCATION, health services, and other social initiatives, are diverted to provide infrastructure in tourist areas, all in order to chase the 19 cents on the dollar. the strain on the ecology has to be factored in.

studies have shown that foreign visitors to caribbean destinations use 30 times as much water per day as do locals. so, as is common in places like Puerto Rico, scarce water is diverted to the hotel areas to fill swimming pools, etc, while locals have no running water. in places like the DR, where the chica trade is rampant, the social fabric is eroded by overseas deviants who bring perversions to these shores, such as pedophilia. in countries such as Jamaica, with permissive drug useage statutes, the country has become an armed camp, as drug lords fight over turf, and the supplying of hallucinogens to sate the appetites of gringo for contraband drugs. so, before we start glorifying the tourist industry for allowing a few folks to say "will that be medium well, or well done, Massa?", try to figure out what it costs to acquire that wondrous privelege, and see if it is a net gain, or net loss.
