Santo Domingo. - Airport authorities expect the arrival of 2.07 million passengers in Las International Americas Airport during the holidays, 40,000 more than in 2008 and affirm that everything is ready to receive the hundreds of thousands of Dominicans who visit in December.
Airports Department delegate Carlos Cota Lama said representatives of the agencies which operate in the airport and of the airports management company Aerodom coordinate the measures to be implemented during the holidays.
He said Customs, Immigration, and Civil Aeronautics officials took part in a work meeting, as well from other government agencies such as Public Health.
Cota said the terminal staff was increased to expedite the check of passengers’ documents and of their luggage, adding that the influx of Dominicans in December leads to more flights by the carriers to meet the higher demand.

Would someone please explain why Politur drive around the airport on Segways? At $6000 per, I would rather see these bribe seekers on foot.

instead of speculating about what i think, maybe you should give your ëducated¨prognosis. then again, that is hard work, for one such as yourself. it is far easier to sit by and ridicule others. i am willing to stick my neck out and predict that there is no way this figure makes sense. not in the current economic conditions in the world. in the last year, an average of 200,000 people have lost jobs each month in the USA alone. i would surmise that the dominican community abroad is not immune to the downturn. and, since travel is discretionary, it stands to reason that in order for it to increase, then discretionary income must also have increased. i might be wrong, but it sounds counterintuitive to me.

Maybe they are expecting 2million visitors and spent the money preparing for that amount. I seriously doubt that many will pass through this holiday season. Possibly during the entire winter but definitely not for just the holidays. Another example of how an uneducated corrupt politician says whatever they please and looks like a total fool in doing so. The global economy is still in bad shape and travel during the holidays is a luxury. US indicators are showing people are spending cash on hand only and steering away from running up credit card debt. In our country they do the opposite. Spend on credit until it dries up and just never pay. You can only stretch the rubber band so long until it snaps. Our corrupt government officials already know this and are pilfering all they can until the well runs dry. The poor people will be the ones left holding the bill.

You are wrong people - travel gets a boost when the economy goes down. Contracts are not renewed and what better ot travel the World like my friends and wait for the economy to improve - at the same time picking up new languages, contacts etc. People do not buy a car, yacht or plane involving credit for 36 months or more but blow what would have been the deposit on a holiday!
In fact research shows that spending on holidays is the most resilient in a recession as people use holidays to mend strained relationships etc. The car of a strained family may be getting past its 2 year 'sell by' date so of course they jet away to the Caribbean instead of say motoring to a ski resort. where their status, not having a 2009 model car, would be lower. Equally in today's property market they are not going to install a new jacuzzi suite or swimming pool. And they wonder if investing in extensive denistry and cosmetic surgery to have the perfect image for the next executive post is going to

come up trumps so why not sip a few cocktails by a beautiful Caribbean villa pool.
Those with financial re-alignment on the horizon will take advantage and max out their credit cards on services that do not have to be returned - e.g holidays in the Carribean. Those diversifing their property portfolio away from the US etc. will also take trips.
So all in all a bumper harvest for the tourism industry.

as to vacanos finding references to the panthers humorous. well, had they not fought for the rights of people of color in the USA, people like you would be sitting in the ¨coloreds only¨section of public transportation, and shining massa Blutarsky´s jackboots.
