Toronto.– Five
passengers aboard a WestJet flight from the Dominican Republic were
taken to hospital by ambulance Wednesday night after apparently
suffering from food poisoning, the Canadian online paper thestar.com reported.
According to the report, ambulance crews were called to
Toronto Pearson International Airport after reports of some passengers on the
flight from Punta Cana feeling ill. An ambulance bus was waiting when the plane landed at 9 p.m.
The
adult passengers, including three members of one family, were examined
by paramedics at the airport then taken to the Trillium health center
in Etobicoke.
About 80 other passengers on the flight were cleared by a Health Canada nurse at the airport. Russ
Power, the duty manager for Peel's Emergency Medical Services, said the
call was "pretty much routine" and looked like a "clear-cut case of
food poisoning."

where was the food loaded ? was it the catering service in Toronto or Punta Cana ? inquiring minds want to know

If they became ill in the plane it is very clear that it was the plane's food that made them sick.
I say this because they will not say they got sick with airline food but hotel food.

Nothing like food poisoning in a full airplane with only 4 plus toilets at 20,000 feet, good thing the Pilot and co-pilot didn't suffer the same fate or this would of been auto-pilot overdrive.

Food poisoning typically takes about 6 hours for most people. That flight is only 4 hours. I doubt it was airline food that made them sick.

My guess is that they ate outside of a resort in some town or on a tour. The food was most likely in an area where the power goe's out. It's great economic support for the medical industry!

this is disturbing news, because it is recurrent. i remember recently, over 50 english travellers got excruciatingly ill in cabarete. these things hit the internet. a friend of mine from London told me months ago that travel agencies in the UK are alerting people to be very careful about what they eat here. if this continues uncorrected, no amount of glistening concrete and glass structures is going to keep tourism afloat. nobody wants to spend 5 days on the throne in a faraway land. not unless the throne is in Buckingham Palace.

I was born here and am still very careful of what I eat. I have gotten sick many times when I was younger but we learn how to check our food more properly as we get older especially in this type of environment. I feel the primary cause of this is the electrical problems in our country and secondary the lack of proper education and training on food handling. Businesses don't want to throw food away so they just sell it regardless. They need the money to survive and are willing to put people in danger of becoming sick. This is just wrong and they should be held accountable for this. The electrical problems are the main concern though as keeping foods fresh is a major problem in this country. The electrical problem stems from corruption. People in charge for years have been so corrupt lining their pockets and their families the country has suffered.

VeronicaDr, have a happy holiday. your forthright, unbiased comments have been a blessing to this board. unlike the braggers and boasters, you call a spade a spade. and yes, poor refrigeration and cooking methods are the causes of most of the gastric disorders here. would you take a chance with your stomach , eating one of those fishes hung on sticks near to Bonao? i mean, has it been properly cooked after it is removed from a dusty environment, replete with diesel fumes?

Veronica,
Lots of what you say is right on; however, you neglected hygiene. Many people look at washing their hands after visiting the water closet as something that is unnecessary or will cost them money. I've seen similar attitudes in US as well. This contributes materially to stomach ailments.
I second what Dr. Dread stated above.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

I have flown that flight. They would have left the resort prior to lunch. If there was an issue, I would suspect something at the airport. Then again...when 3 family members get sick, it is often transmitted by other means. Now...if all 5 were staying at the same resort...that might be different!

glomar, the fact that more people do not die in this country from stomach disorders is a mystery. i just stopped in a neighborhood colmado to buy some cheese. the attendant picked up a dirty knife from God knows where, wiped it on her blouse, and proceeded to make the cuts. once at home, i sliced off both sides and discarded them. you are so right. i watch mothers pick up soothers that fall from the mouths of infants onto the street. they simply brush them off on their pants, and stick them back in the child's mouth. however, i guess medical science will probably suggest that such actions build up immunity to diseases. until some of the water into which the pacifier falls is infected with some virulent bacteria. then we have a problem.

Actully Dread...you hit it on the nose! The fact that Dominicans for the most part do not fanatically disinfect everything they use, allows the immune system to remain strong. It is the world of drugs, hand sanitizers and lawsuits where the problem lays. It is time for the modern world to eat a little dirt and get their bodies back in sync with good and bad.
BTW...Westjet does not get food from the DR...the food is prepared in Canada.

most likely that airplane food was rotten , either that somebody had a cold in that plane and started sneezing on the food most likely the employees on board. hey dreads thats nasty what colmado is that and you actually buy cheese that somebody has to cut with knife lol , thats real hood right there I would prefer to just go to a supermercado and buy me a cheese that in a wrapper .
From: Dominican Republic
I can say from my numerous flights with WestJet..the food ( which you must pay for) has always been very fresh and dated...even the person who prepared it is listed. I do not personally expect the airline to be the cause...BUT...the airport.

actually, hellborn, the cheese you buy in the wrapper is probably Kraft cheese food, or velveeta. people of sterner taste buy cheeses which are produced in wheels, and bough by specified quantity. cheese in plastic wrappers is real ghetto.
