President Fernandez  tours AILA facilities.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez yesterday headed the inaugural of the construction of the runway at the Las Americas International Airport (AILA), at a cost of US$19 million, reportedly the most modern in the entire Caribbean.

Fernandez arrived in the terminal at 12:10 p.m. to inaugurate runway 17-35, which is 3,345 meters long and 75 meters wide, and paved shoulders of 15 meters.

The airports management company Aerodom said the new runway is thick enough to handle any aircraft, including the heaviest, an Airbus 380.

Why is the building of a runway major news? is this country so far back that we have to celebrate the mediocre? arent these updates supposed to happen on a regular basis? isnt the goverment collecting taxes to maintain roads isnt there a budget for this? Stupid I say.

I'm sure I'll see this news again 20 years from now when the lack of maintanance of the current runway forces the goverment to fix it.

WTF!!! Appears to me this is a ridiculous price ($19MM) for a 3300 m strip. It is built on a limestone base. Oh well. Who really cares? Nothing really jives in the blessed country , the DR. Can't believe anything coming from anyone lately. Only Sen. Guerrero seems to be the truthful one. How are the wonderful development projects of Punta Perla and the one Piniero Group has in SPM? I trust they are going gangbusters by this stage, as ground breaking was over 45 days ago.

The other day I was eating at neptunos with a group of friends who came down with me from the states and Leonel's daughter is there with her boyfriend. I watched her and her boyfriend laugh after they made the waiter take the umbrella from the table of a group of people eating on a table and put it on hers. The sun hit those people really hard and all she could do was keep laughing. After the waiter politely asked them if they can put the umbrella in the middle, the words which came out of her boyfriends mouth were: "Quiere que lo tranque?". At this point in time Leonel's daughter again laughed. At the point in time I felt embarrassed and ashamed of my country and the abuse that goes on. I thought I would share this story with the rest of you.

75 x 3345 = 250,875 square meters

19,000,000 / 250,875 = US$75.00 Square Meter.

That's very cheap, at the US a cubic yard of 4,000 PSI concrete cost US$105.00 , only the concrete, no rebars, labor, equipment etc....etc.

Idiots !!!

So... apparently people don't get that this is news. Hell, if O'Hare rebuilt one of its runways, you could bet the Chicago Sun-Times would report it in this manner.

It's an airplane runway. Any competent engineer will tell you: it's not just dumping concrete. These things have to be able to withstand the tonnage of huge passenger planes on the 6 or so spots that the wheels actually make contact with the ground. And they have to do this several times a day, without cracking or otherwise breaking. This is stuff is VERY EXPENSIVE.

Cardozo, sadly, I have heard stories similar to this. I don't feel 'shame' for my country... but the abuse does sadden me greatly. I have opportunities to live well in the exterior, or try to stay in the DR and make change. When I hear these stories, it makes me think change is impossible.. at least in my lifetime. Truth is, there are plenty of good Dominicans out there that want to change things in this country. But I fear they become as disillusi

Perception,

Your correct, that is a bargin if by New York standards and fairly comprable with Texas prices. However is that just the cost of materials or does it include labor too. If it is inclusive of labor costs as well and is comprable to US pricing the profit margin is really high since I can guarantee the DR laborers are not making US wage rates. Just a thought

Three construction contractors died and went to heaven - a Haitian, a Jew, and an Italian. When they got there, St. Peter welcomed them warmly and asked if they could do him a favor before they entered heaven. It seems that the Pearly gates were in need of some repair, and he wanted some estimates.

The Haitian contractor looked the job over carefully and estimated the job at $600. When asked how he came up with that figure, he said, “$200 materials, $200 labor, and $200 profit.”

St. Peter then asked the Jewish contractor for an estimate. After careful inspection the Jew answered, “$3000 - $1000 materials, $1000 labor, and $1000 profit.”

When St. Peter asked the Italian for an estimate, he answered immediately without looking over the job at all - $2600. Asked how he came up with that figure he answered, “Simple, $1000 for you, $1000 for me, and $600 to get the Haitian over there to do the work.”

Point: m3 and m2 are different..don't know much about airport runway construction, but I don't think that the pour is more than 16" deep, if poured on a well prepared limestone base. But who care? The fact is there was money in the $19MM cost figure given, for several palms to get greased. Everyone is happy.!! Let the big planes arrive with lots of Tourist. Mo money, mo money, mo money. We be rich!

It is clear to me that they are quoting this amount in US$ because the article is in English and the target audience is mainly American (USA)

Great - Air France and Lufthansa should have A380 this year! Should save a lot of jet fuel! Configurations up to 800 passengers!

DR tourism will boom with new A380 on the runway. This plane banishes cramped flights.
