SANTO DOMINGO. - Tourism mogul Frank Rainieri today became honorary director of the Los Haitises National Park, and sworn in by Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal.

Fernandez Mirabal said the president of the Punta Cana Group is a successful businessman who’s shown efficiency, for which he’s confident he’ll protect and promote the park.

He said Rainieri’s appointment is based on his record as a tourism leader and in private management.

Rainieri said he felt “forced” to assume that responsibility, without pay, to improve the park.

He said he’ll work together with the farmers to solve the problems in Los Haitises; a protected area he said has been a source of discord for a long time, adding that among his proposals is to create a foundation to collect funds for its protection.

Is this a match made in heaven? Getting a Tourism specialist to manage protected lands. Will there be a scandal in 2012 of how these protected lands were sold or leased off piece-meal for time shares or new construction?

Let's wait and see?

lets see it with good hope that it will work, that's one of the major problems that some dominicans have negative negative and negative minds. first lets give it sometime and the see how it works and if is doesn't works then you can make your negative comments, but for now lets be on the good hope. guillermo moreno is not going to be president now that you have dropped miguel vargas maldonado as your candidate josean.

The problem with the wait and see approach is that after we wait and see that someone isn't doing the job what do we do then. The approach should be to have someone with integrity (that leaves out every member of the government other than Miguel Cocco) monitor the performance of appointed officials. Kind of what the Camara De Cuentas is supposed (and doesn't) on a financial level.

This man has been a very successful private entrepreneur. He has a vested interest in tourism, and I am sure will do everything possible to ensure this natural resource will be attractive to tourist, while preserving its natural beauty. I believe this would be particularly important to North American tourists, who have been gifted with some of the most beautiful parks in the world.

This gentleman has taken a non-paying position, which is admirable indeed, given fact that his valuable talents could be used to increase revenue in his money-making ventures. In other words, he is making a personal sacrifice in the interest of the country, which is infinitely more than could be said about those overpaid, underachieving pillagers making up rest of gov’t. If nothing else, at least he is saving us an exorbitant salary. I commend him for his sacrifice; perhaps other will be similarly inspired.

Not a reflection on the man's personal character, but I can see from the comments that I'm not alone in seeing the clear potential for a conflict of interests if a successful tourism entrepreneur is given a post like this.

I think that we should give Mr Rainieri a chance. Government will never get this park under control for its vast size and location. There are too many fronts for farmers, scammers and just ignorant people to go in and cause further destruction. I can remember as a child when hoardes of people migrated there from the hills of Sajoma to that region and pretty much wiped it out to farm useless unsuitable. In '92 I went back to revisit this drama and was caught up in the great Balaguer eviction of farmers and ranchers. Yes there were poor farmers there, but mostly I saw power and lang hungry men getting rich from free land they took over. This is one of the most inhospitable environments in the world with very high humidity, constant rains, zillions of insects of all sorts, tons of snakes, cacatas, etc...Of the hundreds of relatives that went to live there, I can pretty much count with my hands how many are left there....cont...

On the bright side for this god forsaken area, there are hundreds if not thousand interesting things to see and do. This place can be considered the lungs of the Caribbean with its lushness and fast recovering forest coverage. Its ideal for hiking thousands of kilometers of trails that can be recovered, some as old as the Tainos themselves that inhabited the area and left a lot of their marks in some of the caves. Around the park are some very old colonial towns like Sabana Grande de Boya, which still preserves its almost 500 yr old church and presumably the grave of Enriquillo. Within this area a Taino village-like museum can be established to show case how the original inhabitants once lived in harmony with their world. Farms on the outer edges of the park can be organized into eco-friendly lodges like Monte Verde in Costa Rica. Rainieri has been involved in other eco-friendly activities in the past so I hope for the better, not for the worst.

Why would this guy be a bad thing? I don't see any reason. Yes, most of his investments are in the tourist industry, but that does not mean he will gain financially by secretly selling parts of a national park. On the contrary he and the country would gain more by preserving this national treasure. Have any of you been to Niagara Falls or the Gran Canyon? The cities and towns surrounding them create a lot of revenue because of tourism. Mister Rainieri has been doing great work for the DR for many years, I remember meeting him in 1987 @ Neon when he was the owner (boy what a great club that was). I would recommend to whoever does not think Mr. Rainieri is the right man for this job to take a ride to Punta Cana, so you can see the vision this man has.

Mr Ranieri is not connected with Cap Cana. He is one of partners of Grupo Punta Cana, developers of Punta Cana airport, Los Corales, and the Punta Cana Resort chain. The Hazoury family are the developers of Cap Cana.

There are important mangroves in Los Haitises National Park and two major life zones: the wet forest and the subtropical rainforest. Cedar, ceiba, mahogany, and other tropical American trees are common here.

A large number of birds can be found here, including parrots, owls, and gannets. Notable are also the ìjutíaî and the solenodonte. Birds include gannets, Hispaniolan parrots, and owls.

There are pictographs and petroglyphs in some caverns.

As part of the largest estuary in the insular Caribbean, the 208 km2 Los Haitises National Park is a protected area in the northeast of the country (see map), which offers the visitor a rich variety of natural wonders to explore, including: large expanses of mangrove, humid subtropical forest, sea grass beds, and pristine keys scattered along the length of the coast.

The National Park of Los Haitises is Located at the western end of the bay on the south shore across from Sanchez, this park features mangrove swamps with giant mangrove trees forming a lush, green canopy above the watery trails that wind through the swamps. Taino caves where the islands first inhabitants lived are another popular attraction of the park. Tours leave from Samana, Sanchez and Sabana de la Mar at the park's eastern edge across the bay from Samana.

I totally agree with gouletcolonial. In addition to the fact that Punta Cana has a beautiful nature reserve with natural springs for the residents to swim in teaming with fish and turtles all made possible by Frank Raineri, this man is a brilliant city planner. He knows better than anyone the importance of the presevation of this Garden of Eden natural Park.

Action speaks louder than words and Mr. Raineri has proven he is capable of getting the job done over the past 30 years here in Punta Cana. Before making negative comments, come and see what Mr. Raineri has accomplished.

From many aspects Rainieri's past and present work should be a model for success for each one of us.

Hey, Arsenio, you were just insulting me on the National bases? Was that a racist thought?

Ayayay papa, tu 'ta loco completamente.

Racism is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination.

Frank Ranieri's history with Punta Cana and the Cornell Biodiversity center on Punta Cana should be testimony to Mr. Ranieri's continued love of sustainable development. His concern for the welfare of the Dominican Republic is evident in all his developments. It is sincerely felt that the decision to have Mr. Ranieri work with your National Park is an extremely good one and is in the best interest of the Dominican Republic.
