SANTO DOMINGO.- The Punta Cana Group is among the finalists of 12 destinations to receive the Tourism of Tomorrow Prizes 2009, awarded by the World Travel and Tourism Council  (WTTC) since 2003.

The Dominican tourism group has been preselected in the category Destination Management.

Awards on the best sustainable practices include Destination Administration or Management, Conservation, Benefits to the Community and Global Tourism Business.

This preselection highlights Punta Cana’s 40th anniversary celebration, and recognizes the work carried out for sustainable tourism development.

“Our institution has been one of the pioneers in sustainable tourism in Dominican Republic and is always concerned with aspects that affect the surrounding communities, which turns to us into model  development for other destinies  the world,” said Punta Cana Group president Frank Rainieri.

An independent international team selected the 12 finalists for each category, for having successfully shown their sustainable tourism practices, including the protection of the natural and cultural inheritance, their economic and social contributions to the local communities and operations respecting the environment.

Costas Christ, president of the selection team, said more than 40 proposals were received this year from countries in six continents.  “More and more companies and countries realize that sustainable tourism is not only protecting the environment and cultural diversity, it’s also an important economic opportunity.”

He said the selection process for the “Tourism of Tomorrow” prizes goes beyond what a company affirms on its practices. “Our next phase involves on site evaluation by experts to each finalist project, to determine the selection of a winner in each category.”

You have to give credit where credit is due. Punta Cana deserves it. I wouldn't be surprised if DR gets the first prize.

DR needs to react to WEF Report

The Global Competitiveness Report 2008-2009 directed by Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum and Michael E. Porter of Harvard University has been released, and reads like an ice-cold shower for the Dominican Republic.

In the Global Competitiveness Index Rankings, the DR is ranked 98th, with a 3.72 score. In Latin America it has only fared better than Suriname, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Bolivia and Nicaragua (Haiti is not ranked). The DR's score dropped from 96th in the previous report. In the region, Chile is 28th, Puerto Rico 41st and Barbados 47th. Then follows Panama in 58th place, Costa Rica in 59th, Mexico in 60th, and Brazil in 64th, also in the top half of the rankings.

The main obstacles to doing business in the country are corruption, tax rates, an inadequately educated workforce, tax regulations, inefficient government bureaucracy, policy instability, poor work ethic in national labor force, access to financing, inadequate supply of infrastructure, inflation, poor public health, crime and theft, restrictive labor regulations and foreign currency regulations.
The report focuses on key factors that determine economic growth, and explains why some countries are much more successful than others in raising income levels and opportunities for their people, and provides policymakers and business leaders with an important tool in the formulation of improved economic policies and institutional reforms. The 2008-2009 Report features 134 economies and is acknowledged as the most comprehensive assessment of the productive potential of nations worldwide, with global rankings covering 100 indicators.

josean,
How hypocritical to say Haiti is not ranked when it's he hard working Haitian people who have made DR what it is today.

What they should have done is come up with a ranking for Haiti, then add it to the 3.72 DR score, then divide it by two. This way the sweat and the hard labor of the Haitian immigrants in DR would have been refelcted in the DR score.

My business keeps me occupied in Europe and Asia. I have an office in the principality of Luxembourg. Although travel has slowed down to screeching halt lately, I am generally on a plane every 8-10 weeks. I work on alternative energy in auto industry, including fuel cell and hybrids. I deal with all major European and Asian manufacturers first-hand. Interest in this technology is just about unimaginable.

I have children attending very expensive universities in Boston, and that takes care of a lot of the extra money. Also, parents and most of immediate family now reside in US, so that makes it even more difficult to visit DR. I own three pieces of properties in DR, one of which I have never seen. Everything managed by professionals, with my mom and cousin also overseeing things from time to time.

No. GM has its own fuel cell facility here in Honeoye Falls, NY. Many of my former colleagues work there. We use different technologies. Ours is based on "solid oxide" while theirs is based on fuel reformation to extract pure hydrogen from a liquid fuel. I myself worked for GM for 18 years and produced and designed several components for their system, for which I hold US patents.

Parents want to go back, but they are nearly 80, and many people tell me it's not a good idea because of increasing crime in DR and health care. Getting around should be an additional problem, since they no longer drive. I think that, like most Dominican parents, they are just going to be in both places, traveling every few months. Father misses azure waters and the sea birds....he is always talking about it. However, what I really think he misses is his friends and politics and his Ron Brugal.

I can't think of the name of company in Mass[probably an MIT offshoot]...there are so many competitors out there. I was at an SAE congress on subject where there was standing room only; if you stepped out to go to the bathroom, they wouldn't let you back in, so we stood for four hours straight. The technology is red hot, but overall cost is quite high. I am far too invested in this business, so I will need to diversify.

My advise to you on investing would be to really familiarize yourself with the company and their intellectual property portfolio before investing. Intellectual property [patents] rule in this most competitive business. I would also like to know the specific market sector they target, as well as any partnerships with original equipment manufacturers-both foreign and domestic. German marques are at forefront in Europe, and GM in US. The Japanese are players, but very cautious. As far as rest of world, the technology is too advanced and they can not afford it

There you go, from shooting darts at each other to having an informative and symbiotic exchange of information. That's civility!
The baby boomers and 60's generation still rules! More so than our life expectancy has been lengthened by scientific discoveries in medicine.
Regarding parents over 80 residing in DR. My mother who is in in her 90's and still going strong,
bloomed when she moved from Florida to DR full time. She now is with her family and friends, has
full time help around her so she can talk, argue and boss them around all day, and has become
a full time gardener.
Health care services and equipment were better in Florida, but things have improved
recently in DR specially in the capital. There are many US trained doctors and state of the art facilities available and the doctors are more patient friendly than in the states.
The security part would depend on the area they may reside and if you take precautions is good and not worse than many cities in the USA.

My mother can't drive anymore even though her license is current (she complained so much that the examiner relented and gave it to her). But she has a part time family driver take her shopping and around.
She would not last long if she were to move to the states, because of the social isolation there and
less warm and friendly attitude by everybody in general.
I think that living here has its tricks but the quality of life for the not so demanding is better than most places in the states, unless your particular social status in the USA is in the highest income levels.
Definitely living in both places is the ultimate, but at advanced ages traveling back and forth
between the US and DR can be challenging and not recommended.

But to be honest the PLD is the best available of all the garbage. At least with leonel we got the metro and the usual dominican corruption unlike the quirino paulino from mejia and the country at the brink of a coup de tah. Look it out this way the PRD by far is the largest dominican party and the dominican people scare to death if they get to power again and do the same astrocity they did because there is no doubt we will get a chavez if that were to happen. Let me tell you a little history about Frank Rainieri you may or may not know.
He wasn't always rich but he came from good hard working genes, he did have a wealthy American backer that pursued his dream and slowly but surely invested in the Punta Cana area and even built an airport there patiently but with much hard work.
He didn't count on the government to help him and initiated many philanthropic projects and others that dealt with improving infrastructure and renewing roads, electricity generation that should be the responsibility of the do nothing municipalities, the tourism office or the central government.
Frank Raineiri is an icon of Dominican tourism and a respected businessman.
Remember that people in business main purpose is to generate profits for their companies and investors. When Oscar the la Renta and Julio Iglesias got fed up with the autocratic and medieval rules of Casa de campo they were welcomed to Punta Cana with open arms and many others followed.

"Remember that people in business main purpose is to generate profits for their companies and investors.'

Professor my point exactly, any side effect beneficial to the society at large is not because they are saints but because it beneficial to the bottom line. It is always to maximise profits and minimise cost, they are not Mother Teresas' or social workers, like the capitalist worshipers here at DT want to blindly attribute to them.

Its always if its good for business first not if its good for society and that is their prerogative as private entrepreneurs lets just not turn them into cult Gods!!

We as Dominicans have a very seroius problem with the Cult of Personality!

Gneroso,

Thank you vey much for advise on parents and the great living inDR. We are loooking into this deeply, and that is reason why I will travel to DR this coming June. Biggest problem is mother, who we refer to as "the general", who could be quite demanding. It will be hard to keep help for her around. I am sure I will have to travel frequnetly to DR to deal with help-related issues.

Your suggestion that DT endeavor to pursuit of information on independent or even assisted living facilities in DR is excellent. I think this could be a gold mine, as so many aging
Dominicans long to return to their beloved country. Man, maybe somebody tike Mr. Rainieri could be of help. He is a man that could pull something nice and credible off, and who seems to enjoy widespread trust.

"good news" is in the eye of the beholder. Self serving government propaganda may be good news to YOU but to others its is almost always to be suspected. In the case of politicians and government officials most must be considered guilty until proven innocent. As for private entrepreneurs they must also be viewed with a sceptics eye because their all mighty GOD is profits by any means necessary.

Just look at what they did to the world economy because for the last 28 years we placed them on the pedestal of "they are smarter than every body else" so leave them alone and unregulated.

So you can continue seeing everything with rosy colored glasses (or purple in your case) and go along to get along. I will stay in the often lonely unpopular corner of reality telling what I humbly think people should hear not what they want to hear.

Josean,

Will do best to keep everyone abreast of development in this technology, at least what I am at liberty to discuss. I also have a development team working feverishly on compressed natural gas [CNG] powertrain technology, with primary concentration on fuel management and induction. This is another super hot area, because:

1) it is plentiful
2) It is cheap: ~50% cost reduction over liquid fuels.
3) Extremely clean and offers ~30% CO2 emission reduction.
4) Compatibility with high thermal efficiency powertrains, i. e. diesel
5) Suitability to turbocharging: everybody going to smaller displacement engines!
6) Independence from OPEC and associated market swings.
7) CNG [~70 % Methane] can be extracted from garbage and manure and other waste, so DR and other country could at least provide partial supply.
8) Etc.

"4) Compatibility with high thermal efficiency powertrains, i. e. diesel"

That is of immediate interest to me I have several diesel vehicles, three trucks and a pickup. So any info you can share without compromising yourself would be greatly appreciated.

I am also interested in setting up an off grid power supply. Using wind as primary, backed up by solar panels into a high capacity inverter with, as last resort, backup generator (like a dual use Carrier 14kw on either CNG or LP. Or just a diesel CAT or John Deere.

If you have any advice or can direct to a source of information I would really appreciate it.

Josean,

Have you considered making your own bio-diesel fuel for your trucks. I have colleagues making about 200 gallons a month. They are bored scientist and really seem to enjoy it. They claim to have cut operating cost by about half. One of by-products is soap and they bring it to work and leave it on tables like zucchini for people to take home.

As for your electricity setup, it all depends on your ultimate objective. Are you looking at a backup system or a means to supplement your energy source?

As a primary source of energy down on the farm in DR.

The vehicles are also in DR so I don't know if the bio-diesel option is possible with the availability of whatever would be the primary source for its production.

Josean,
As a source of energy, your plan seems good. Since your farm is likely located in remote area, without adequate access to CNG or even LPG, diesel might be a better candidate. I like the higher energy density of the diesel. More importantly, unless the CNG engine was designed for that fuel from ground up, the diesel engine would be considerably longer lasting. Converted engines have longevity issues due to inherent lack of lubricity in CNG fuel, which destroys intake valves.

My main objective in pursuing a project such as one suggest would be responsible value. So I would contrast fuel cost with emissions, as well as the 10-15 percent expected torque and power reduction with CNG and LPG, in addition to powertrain longevity.
