Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic, the second largest Caribbean nation, experienced a slight visitor increase in 2008 despite the international economic slowdown. According to a recent report issued by the DR Ministry of Tourism, arrivals increased slightly in 2008 with over 3.4 million guests choosing the DR as their vacation destination. This is a 1.45 percent increase compared to the same period in 2007.

Visits to the DR from the U.S. remain steady, with more than one million arrivals for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, North American arrivals to the DR exceeded those from Europe for the fourth successive year by approximately 24 percent.

Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia said, "The DR is a culturally-rich and sophisticated tourism destination like no other. More global visitors are choosing the DR for our unspoiled natural beauty, diversity and accessibility. With eight international airports and many seaports, visitors receive a warm and friendly Dominican welcome among magnificent hotels, world-class golf courses, luxury marinas, amazing cultural and historic attractions, exciting nightlife and eco-adventures not found anywhere else. The DR really has it all."

The most popular destination in the DR for visitors continues to be Punta Cana on the East Coast, as its international airport received nearly 1.9 million resident and nonresident arrivals in 2008. The second most visited airport is Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo with nearly 1 million arrivals, followed by Puerto Plata International Airport on the North Coast, El Cibao International Airport in the Central region, La Romana International Airport, also on the East Coast, El Catey International Airport on the Northeast Coast and La Isabela International Airport, also in Santo Domingo

Boycott DR tourism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me get this straight.

You want to stop touriam to the DR but you want the end of the embargo to Cuba.

Liberal Window-licker logic at it's best.

The economic slowdown only started at the very end of the year. The last quarter figures were down dramatically. The purpose of this article is beyond me. Why not give the statistics for 2004 or 2007? Who are we trying to convince that we are not losing visitors.?

juanb, it is the same, tired old song, where they give half the story. they tell us that footfall increased, but do not give the two most critical stats: HOW LONG DID THEY STAY, and HOW MUCH DID THEY SPEND. who cares if 10 million guys came for 3 days and spent 10 dollars per day?

I live in the Us, my parents retired to the DR years back so I sually go back and forth several times a year. But I know I've cut my trips down there considerably. I was down there over Christmas, about three weeks, and it was amazing.....La Venezuela (in Sto. Diom.) was packed every night! And I mean every night...and this is the crazy part...they weren't tourists. I guess the citizens are living it up as if nothing is coming their way this year. That reminds me a lot of all the spending we were encouraged to do post-911 when we should have been saving for the rainy season we're in.

Manny, it is the local ethos, my friend. worry about today, and let tomorrow worry about itself. as many a gringo has observed, many locals would rather you offer them 10 dollars today , than 40 dollars tomorrow. that is why the moment folks get the bi-weekly salary (quincennal), you cannot get into a club or bar on that night. the following morning, there is a line at the local loanshark, all looking for money to pay the rent. so, do not be surprised if the streets are laden with people blowing dosh; tomorrow will provide for itself.

Its funny for me to giving credits to this kind of headlines. But with all the travel i do i have been hearing more often from pasangers that they went to DR.I'm not saying believe this but it may have some truth to since is probably the cheapest place in the caribbean with nice beaches and them golf course are pulling in a lot of people. Now they have to promote other areas of the country instead of focusing on big cities because lots of visitors come from big cities and are looking to get away and see something different. Polo magnetico believe or not most dominicans i talked to think i'm lying when i tell them about it.

This information is all a play on numbers and its credibility is questionable. Keep in mind, that US numbers reported but does not disclose Canada #'s - its biggest tourism source. Also, stating that the US visitors (tourist & native Dominicans) outpaced visits from Europe is not uncommon. The Tourism Dept is padding the numbers & story only talking to strengths while failing to address the downturns.

There is a DT article which states:
SCANDAL NIXES DR MILITARY PARADE
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....ominican-Republic-military-parade
Caribbean governments are already worried about a SHARP FALL IN TOURIST ARRIVALS in the global recession. Dominican Republic's national police service said it had arrested 22 of its own officers (not enough) & 3 assistant prosecutors in Puerto Plata who were accused of links with organized crime & drug trafficking.

Dreads, the Tourism Minister is managing this the same way Dominicans live (for the moment)!

citizen of the world, Arsenio Lembert and myself have always been very muted in our celebration of the tourism buildup, realising that there is such a thing as "tourism destination life cycle" in todays highly globalised world, everywhere is a tourist destination. during the cold war, and more isolated times, westerners basically focused their attention upon the caribbean, because places in the east were inhospitable. now, everybody can go to hitherto "forbidden" places. 30 years ago, people went to nassau and montego bay, because , even if they wanted to see the Great Wall of China, they could not. my good friend just came back from china on a business trip, and, apart from the airfare, the place is many times cheaper than the DR. there is so much to see and do there, he was bewildered. it is not just Cuba we have to worry about: it is Cambodia, and Vietnam, Africa, the Middle East. we are living in the global village. besides, the economy will not permit people to travel

like before, so there will be a slowdown , globally, in REVENUES from tourism. by the time the economy heals itself, there will be a new "flavor of the month" destination. some guys are not realistic. they believe that we are going to be the next Monte Carlo, or, Monte Carlo is going to be the next Punta Cana. i hope they are right. let's just hope that the next big flavor is not some village in Honduras, or something similar. agriculture, baby, agriculture. man cannot live by sun and sand only!

Actually...there were just under 3.9 million arrivals last year. The US market remained the leader with just under 1.1 million vistors....up 1.1% over 2007. Canada had 635,000 gusts arrive....up 8.3%. The Eurpoean Union sent 1.34 million guests....down 3% and all others sent 906,000....down 2%.

There is this misconception that Canada send the most guests. This season to date has shown a bit of softening, but most quality resorts are still running at occupancy rates that are on par with last season.

Chill......why boycott tourism? I am curious?

The average tourist tips $100 per week. That multipied by 3.9 million arrivals means a ton of money, that hard working Dominicans would not have, thus the local colmados suffer...the bario suffer...the farmers suffer.....and onward.

Cheers from the Sunshine

let me see if i get this right..hmmm. "demographices", as you describe them, indicate that there is going to be a large pool of POTENTIAL expats from europe and canada and the USA that are looking to move here. every ape knows that. but, what does it mean in reality? how soon do you think a change is going to come, regarding immigration, and real estate ownership laws in countries like this? enjoy the boom while you can. do you believe that you invented "demographices"? hey, there are dominicans who are studying the current conditions in the country, as we speak. do you think that they are simply going to sit back and allow the country to become an annex of Saskatoon? do you believe that social and political activists are going to sit idly by and permit the country to be broken up into a mosaic of apartheid enclaves, like Las Terrenas, and costambar, and Sosua, and cabarete? they realise that the signs of today point to recolonisation of tomorrow. the USA, and Canada,

Thailand has laws against foreigners buying property. that is coming here, and sooner than you think. you seriously believe that activists and conscious thinkers are going to sit idly by and allow types like you to buy the country out from under them? in case you have been asleep, Tobago has already put a stop to the folly of europeans buying all the real estate and creating their little colonies. you better tell your buddies in Banff to hurry up and get here. in the not too distant future, a change is coming. as slow to act as these people can be sometimes, when gringo starts issuing passes to people to move around in their own country, someone is going to wake up, and start a movement to reclaim the land from types like you who see it as a real estate flea market, and nothing less. want a good idea for a new business with future potential? try tanning salons in Fort McMurray!

Hypocrite - you have the record for the most insults while making the least points....and you cannot even see that. Sigh, hopeless.

i do not go around spreading rumor and innuendo, (Dreadsy)

BS. You sure do, Count the number of posts where, being bankrupt of ideas, you resort to calling me dishonest, a cheat, crooked etc. and when I called on you to BE A MAN - put up just one example or SHUT UP, you just went on spouting more insults. Dready, you may be the only one I known who was gone from his first childhood directly into his second (and that usually does nto happen till one 80 or older) and of course everyone on this site knowns this except you.
