SANTO DOMINGO. - The company Ferries del Caribe will build its own terminal in Santo Domingo’s Sans Souci Port, on an area of 29,000 square meters provided by the Dominican Government.

Puerto Rico Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock made the announcement in press conference held in the National Palace, after meeting with president Leonel Fernandez, together with a a commission of officials and investors from that island-nation, including Ferries del Caribe’s owner.

The facility for the operations of the Ferry, which transports freight and passengers to and from Puerto Rico, will be built at a cost of 10 million dollars and will generate 60 million dollars in annual revenue for the Dominican State.

The new terminal will have a pier capable of docking ships of up to 600 feet in length. The Ferry began operations on July 1, 1998.

Ever taken that "ferry"? I have. It is not a ferry at all, it is a cargo ship which looks like a cruise ship. The passengers onboard are business people bringing cheap goods into DR, and drugs out. I know the owner and staff in Mayaquez, I know the pilot of his private plane (which sits @ Bourinquen aeropuerto at the north west end of PR). He flies to DR often to golf with his high level friends, (guess who). FRIENDS get what they want from the DR Gov.
My opinion is he is not an honest man and does not operate an honest business, and I would avoid promoting his enterprise.

Yes Captain, if you know something go to the right people and let them know. Send them a note or something like that, don't go personally.

The ferry is a large and hopefully the first of many ferry services that will serve PR and other islands the USVI would be great also carrying refercargo agro containers to those islands that import every stick of celery and everything else.....we should take a lesson from Scandinavia when it comes to this kind of transport

We used to import Nike sneakers and Gap shirts. Now, the only thing Dominicans wants are Prada blouses and Gucci bags. Ohhh, the sweet smell of progress!
