Santo Domingo.- The Tourism Ministry heightened its campaign to inform about and clean up the most popular beaches, swimming spots, mountains and ecotourism centers frequented by Dominicans and foreigners during Easter week.
The initiative aims to guarantee the comfort and safety of the local and international visitors, said Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia.
He said the effort included the placing of portable bathrooms and trash bins and information provided for the citizens in signs at the toll plazas,.
The official said 1,500 people participated from that institution, well as work crews of volunteers present in 164 tourist areas.

Cabarete beach is a garbage dump since this weekend , will take many month if not even years to clean up the mess the Dominican's left behind.
Education always come's out cheaper than ignoance in the end! If the Govt. plans on the development of tourism to float the boat to the bank then the dept. of education is going to have to be overhauled and start teaching the children it doesn't matter if your Mami & Popi throw garbage in the street YOU DON'T THROUGH GARBAGE IN THE STREET!
DR was the first country in the world to use recycling as a way of living.
Does anybody remember back in the seventies the botelleros in carretas going around the neighborhoods collecting them and paying you five cents back then? Wasn't it recycling??
Also everytime you bought a mambi or soda in a colmado you always went back to return the bottles and collect the money? Wasn't it recycling??? So lets bring back the botelleros.
I agrees with you lets go back to basics. The same happened to me when a decade ago I took someone I new to DR out side the resort!
We also need to get rid of Styrofoam products and bring the "macutos". We also were one of the first countries to use canvas bags back then we used to call them macutos made out of the rice and flour bags. Can you believe that!
