SANTO DOMINGO.- Part of the tourists headed to Mexico opted for the Dominican Republic out of concern with the swine flu virus, said yesterday the executive vice-president of the country’s hoteliers grouped in Asonahores, Arturo Villanueva.

He said he was informed that Mexico’s situation has promoted hotel chains which have resorts in that country will also reroute their guests to the Dominican Republic.

The hotelier said if need be, the sector is ready to offer solidarity to its international pars and provide all the facilities necessary to attend their occupation.

Villanueva said without alarming the tourists who visit the country, the doctors within the resorts are on the alert to detect any symptom in any of the guests, and their clinics have specialists who’ve been instructed to immediately refer any situation that appears.

He said since early yesterday Asonahores joined Public Health and other organizations, to bolster the preventive efforts at ports and airports.

I only hope that with this windfall the government information services inform the country as soon as there is any suspected case of swine flu and not try to protect the tourist industry by delaying announcements

Yes we will gladly help our friends in Mexico by taking their tourists into our country and getting as much money from this as possible. We will make it look like we are going out of our way to help our Mexican friends while we in fact know we need the extra tourism income this year because it has been slower than ever.

Trick of tour oparators .Think cinysm has no limits.Multi national hoteliers feared about bancrupcy.Poor turists get the risk to accept offer.Suppose there is a choice to do :Money back or deadly adventure. If they want to go to DR .airport authorities must fumigate all planes from US.All buses and cars at the haitian border .All cruise lines. And then they are clean so safe .

Even when they are being taken to DR these hotels are owned by mexicans and therefore aren't losing much... Of course the DR government gets a piece

The virus knows no politics and respects no boundaries or people. It is an enemy to all of humanity. Let's hope this does not turn out to be as devastating as the 1918 pandemic.

antonio,
this will not be like the 1918 virus. Back then people were not able to get the medical attention that we have now. Look at all of the cases in the US and only one person has died. I think that people are aware and will head straight to the hospital when they start feeling sick.
