Cabarete.– Cabarete's first luxury brand, Palmera de Cabarete Resort & Spa,
puts wind in the sails of Laser sailing with its 2009 sponsorship of
Master Sailor Ari Barshi, founder of Cabarete's Laser Training Center
and the annual Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta, the official opening
event of the Laser racing year.
Barshi and his sailboat will wear the
Palmera de Cabarete logo at 2009 Laser regattas in Florida, California, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Spain, and Canada.
Palmera de Cabarete Resort & Spa opens in 2011 on the Dominican Republic's north coast in the town of Cabarete, the "adventure sports capital of the Caribbean."
"The sponsorship of Barshi, as well as Palmera's
sponsorship of the 2009 and 2010 Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta,
underscores our commitment to further establishing Cabarete as
synonymous with peerless, Olympic-quality Laser sailing. We're
delighted that Ari Barshi and the Palmera de Cabarete name will serve
as an ambassador for Cabarete throughout the sailing world,"
said Darren Law, President and Chief Executive Office of NID Holdings,
LLC, developer of the oceanfront Palmera de Cabarete, which will have
138, two, three and four-bedroom suites available for purchase.
Cabarete has gained preeminent stature in the Laser sailing world
due to the quality of Barshi's Center, as well as to the range of
conditions for both champion and novice sailors.
The waters off
Cabarete Beach are protected by a large reef, perfect for beginning
sailors who come to Cabarete for the variety of adventure activities -
surfing, kiteboarding, mountain biking, hiking, and canyoning. Beyond
the reef, the wind and wave conditions are ideal for hardier sailors.

It is only good sailing for little sunfishes. Too many reefs and too much navy intervention.

What's wrong with this picture, one might ask? A country with a miniscule GDP and corrupt political system has real estate prices competing with those of the USA and other 1st world countries! This clearly means that the locals have lost their country and access to its wonderful resources, part of national patrimony, for how could even honest and well-educated individuals who are not part of the oligarchy ever be able to afford such properties?
If trend continues, all beach and similar natural resources access will be the exclusive province of foreigners and local oligarchs. I am not opposed to foreign ownership by any means, but I do believe that an equitable balance must be struck. Justice and the natural patrimony principles demand such equity. Without such proactive actions, no one should be shocked when at some future time the populace rebels, then we will lose.

All the usual crowd spouting on a subject they know nothing about. Lasers are a truly world class boat, and would never allow a major regatta at a sub standard venue. All the very best of the best will be competing. And no, Cabarete will never be a keel boat venue, but so what. Cap Cana is holding the Farr 40 Worlds shortly.

1.2 million that is what Ritz sells their time share for down island
(which proves the old saying, a fool and his money are soon parted :)
From: Dominican Republic, Cabarete
This is not the Ritz Carleton, it is the RIDZ. Por favor, read the writing on their signboard. It is a junk piece of property and a low end condo development between Cabarete and Isla Bon. It is nothing, but a small piece of dirty property. They spelled the name wrong and it received some mention. As to sailboat racing, the Laser Center is doing great. It has attracted Olympic Gold medal winners and brings together groups of people, 13-15 different countries to race together every year. No,there will never be the Farr 40's or another other keel boat or even close to the charter boats and quasi racing boats from Casa de Campo, but for Cabarete, it is a good diversion from the windurfers and kiters, who really give the beach a great deal of publicity. No, there is no marina, even with Ocean World which is a poorly planned and executed piece of property, we have nothing on the North Coast. Our best offering is to have POP nearby to go to Antigua, St. Martin, Puerto Rico etc. .

This Global Crisis is now a global Real Estate bust and I pity those who paid anything over $500,000 for anything anywhere in the world, -because you will take a 25 - 50% loss in the global correction, -if you have to sell anytime in the next 10 years.
Good Luck Palmera trying to sell luxury today at 2005 prices. I think you guys are just a little late but don't worry you'll be early for the next wave in 2019 when speculators return to buy again. Try taking up surfing in Cabarete while you are there, -you'll surely learn how to time a wave. Cabarete is what it is! -and efforts to make it something elite is just more brochure BS from Developers who would be happy destroying the wind with high rises. Cabarete is for the youngsters and Peter Pans who don't want to grow up.

more sanity from the voice of reason, Glomarexplorer. the sad thing is that when the people who feel disadvantaged decide to vent their wrath, they always misdirect their energies. they go after their neighbors, the guy who owns the colmado that gives their family credit, and the motoconcho driver. they should take time to reslise who it is that is displacing them from the land of their birth, all in the quest to make more and more money. this is out of control. when locals are struggling to feed their families, and guys are buying 36,000 square foot "villas" as second homes, do not be surprised if the crap hits the fan in the not too distant future.

I have sailed for over 30 years and have covered the sport for 10.
Lasers are popular as a one design class but would in no way be considered a world class boat. Decent off wind. Nice upwind a pig down wind. Not enough sail area...basically a sunfish on steroids.

Interesting, Ari Barshi is sponsored by Palmera.. Is this the same Ari Barshi that is venting his anger towards the development of Cabarete and the zoning changes.
Now he accepts money from one of the biggest developments, Palmera resorts.
I guess now we know, what the story is. Fight one developer to help the other....
From: Dominican Republic
Palmera you are right. I just went to the developers website and that is alot of buildings on the beach! I have seen this Ari quoted all over the press saying development will kill cabarete. I guess as long as he is sailing free around the world on this developers money what does he care what anyone thinks.
From: Dominican Republic, Cabarete
This new development is two and a half miles from Cabarete Central. I have never seen a windsurfer or kiter in the area where this project will be. I live less than a half a mile from it and pass it daily. Though the original plan was to have four stories, I think the powers that be have limited them to three levels. Even if it went with the first plan, it is too far removed from being in the way of the kiters/windsurfers and sailors. I respect Ari's position and know him to put in the forefront the best interests of the Cabarete sailing community. I think the international recognition that his campaign will bring to this area of the North Coast will be well worth the developer's checkbook.

Cabarete is part of my top 3 destinations in DR. It is a beautiful and quiet area. It is a very good wind location for kitesurfing.
From: United States Virgin Islands
No, unfortunately. But I have friends who actually retired to Cabarete, made it their home to practice their surfing. I also like the nightlife on that small strip on the beach. A few years ago, they partied there till 6am. Someone told they changed the laws in DR and they closed the bars at 2am. One time, on a saturday night, I fell asleep, woke up at 7am, walked down the beach and a techno beach party was still going. The party ended at 9am :-) . No troubles, no fights; you can have a conversation with almost anybody. You can respectfully asked a young single lady to have a drink or dance without her having an attitude. This is unlike some other places in the world where it is almost impossible to approach a young lady if you are an older gentleman. In some other countries like the U.S., a young lady would laugh in your face with her friends and tell this old fool to take a hike! Cabarete lifestyle is: No problem! Relax! Good times!

To: Gouletcolonial: If you ever go to Cabarete, go to La Casita de Papi. I hope Don Papi still has the restaurant and is still alive and kicking. Don Papi is a retired French chef. I used to love his pollo al horno. Tell him that the English Doc says hello.

From: United States Virgin Islands
To GouletColonial: You referred to the prostitution situation in Cabarete. Well, there is prostitution everywhere you go in the world. That is the oldest profession on the planet. Some people like easy and fast money (dinero facil). A prostitute can earn in one night what she would earn a whole month working a "regular" job. From what I understand the average regular job in DR is about $200/month. Now, where in the world can you expect to live on $200/month? I do not care how cheap the cost of living is. Not to defend prostitution because there is a moral issue involve here. Most women with a good education received by their parents will work 10 regular jobs before she goes down the prostitution route. However, you have to realize that there are old or obese men that would never be able to experience the touch of a young woman. So, automatically the prostitutes can prey on the lonely men for a clientele base.
