SANTO DOMINGO.- A Canadian mining company is interested in building two boutique-type hotels with golf courses at a cost of US$850 million in Pedernales, said Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia yesterday, but didn’t reveal its name.

Garcia said the proposals were well received because they agree with the Tourism Ministry’s new effort to develop the South region, for which the "Enriquillo circuit" has been designed, to include Barahona, Pedernales, Independencia and Bahoruco provinces, whose main attraction is the lake’s entire shore.

The official said unlike other tourism regions, the "South Pole’s" development will be planned, for which a company from Dubai has already been contracted to elaborate a master plan for the zone.

Garcia affirmed that the hotels will be built outside the protected area Bahia de las Aguilas, and together with the Environment Ministry will formulate a management plan.

Good quarter

The arrival of tourists in the first quarter fell only 4%, despite the 15% to 20% expected. Garcia said the industry leaders are happy, because they never expected such a high flow amid the current crisis.

Canadians bring less bad habits than the Euros... Hopefully they build using modern designs and not copy the older resorts.

Why does every inch of DR coastline need to be covered by hotels and resorts? Leave Perdenales and that area alone.

Neither the Government nor a mining company knows how to manage hotels or tourists instruments! This is an attempt to mutilate our national parks and/or coastal area. This attack will only translate into more jobs for the Haitian!

We should stop both the project and the mining company who is stealing our precious metals!

Hummm........Let see, what regjion are we talking about now? Oh, its Pedernales, Barahona, Independencia and Bahoruco provinces. By any chance, is that anywhere near the Haitian border? Let me look at the map to make sure. Yup, I was right it is not too far away, it is really close by. Well a guess you know what that means? right? We are going to get the second half of Haiti coming over pretty soon. They are all packing their bags right now to cross over and move in to work on the construction sites, because there are no Dominican workers available. The first and other half of Haitians already lives in the Punta Cana, Higuey area. The investors are foreigners from the US, Spain, Canada, Italy and other parts of Europe. They own all the best prime, beach front property in the DR. Where are we Dominicans going to go? Oh, Oh, Oooh, I I know, I know. we are all going to take a yola and head for Puerto Rico, Yeaaaaayy. Wow, oh boy wow, that is really great !!! Aren't you so happy!!!

Drop travel restrictions to Cuba? Well that might be a good thing. The bad thing is we will lose half of our tourism business, but we will also lose half of our Haitians. Oh shucks!!

You are probably right. The Cubans never allow others to walk all over them like our very refined and diplomatic wimp president LF.

I wonder if all these hotels casinos where really regulated and paid their taxes accordinly and those who received the taxes actually used it in the good of our patria , how different would our homeland be...how advance and up to date would be, our country is at the early 1920's stage when it comes to laws development etc.............when will we get a real president goverment congress that really will take care of our countryman...........................I'm just tire of our country been ravish..........rape ..........molested ........I bet you that all these businesses take a whole buch of the dollars they make illegally and fly it out in small private planes via all those airports we have ...............and thats what makes our country so atrasado... lack of resources ............

the words 850 million dollars and boutique do not go together these are largeThe word boutique hotel is used to express small and elegant versus large and Luxe of which these hotels will probably be neither elegant or luxe

The key is PLANNING, and that is what is lacking in most DR destinations. They are contaminating the beauty that they sell. Punta Cana is an example where the density of construction is not supported with proper roads, parking, drainage, sewer waste and water treatment systems. Their shallow wells are tapping into cross contaminated water because the water table can't support the multiple septic systems that are too close to the wells. Some of the foul smelling water that comes out of those pipes after a good rain is unbelievable. They are bathing in their own waste in these luxury properties and don't want to tell anyone because they will never sell the place. They should put a construction moratorium there until potable water and public sewer systems exist as well as all the other CONCURENCY infrastructure that is required.

For those who say that the workforce will come from Haiti and that they are already packing their bags, well, you know what? good for them. I am sure there are no dominicans from the southwest packing their bags to go work on the construction site, lowly construction work is below most dominicans, even if they are unemployed. I am sure the English schools are not receiving an overflow of new students to get ready for when the hotels open, you know why? because they "take it easy", they want things to come to them, not go out and get it. We deserve to be "invaded" by the haitians because we are too lazy to do anything about it.
