Kingston.– Summer tourism could be grim for some Caribbean destinations, but early signs are that a recovery could begin in the autumn and winter.

British Airways has just announced new or additional flights to five island destinations from the fall, citing demand. The American low-cost carrier Jet Blue is also starting services to three Caribbean countries.

St. Lucia's Tourism Minister Allen Chastenet says that much hard work is still required to lift the region as a whole out of a downturn.

Europe's largest tour operator says Jamaica and the Dominican Republic appear robust for the summer. The company said it had seen a significant increase in popularity of Jamaica in the last few weeks, with sales up 30%.

Well Caonabo/Generoso, DR has had a robust tourism industry prior to the crisis... Either way we benefit...

H1N1 crisis in Mexico has helped inflate the numbers; however this is unsustainable. We need to keep competitive and expand our marketing campaign to actract new visitors from other parts of the world.

Britiish Airways will commence a twice weekly service between London Gatwick and Punta Cana commencing in late October ..this suggests that the tourist business in that part of the DR has a solid base.
I could not help noticing , when I was in England earlier this year that many travel agents were promoting the DR in their windows

Jet blue gets you with the extra $20 second bag charge. They charge you twice and the trip ends up being the same price as the others
