The lighthouse at Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. A beacon to development?
SAN JUAN.- Dominican Republic’s and Puerto Rico’s similar culture, natural beauty and a common language are weapons against the global economic crisis, for which they seek to bolster links in tourism and jointly attract a wider market.
Puerto Rico’s Tourism Agency director said steps are being taken to coordinate multi-destination packages to consolidate the islands as an option for tourists.
Jaime Lopez Diaz said the project is the result of the talks between president Leonel Fernandez and Puerto Rico governor Luis Fortuño, aimed at bolstering both countries’ image as a Caribbean destination.
“The strategy isn’t limited to the interchange of Dominican and Puerto Rican tourists, rather the main markets of both countries. Our desire is to attract Europeans to Puerto Rico and in the same manner help so the American tourists get to know Dominican Republic’s enchantments”
Lopez Diaz said the multi-destination packages could be ready as early as August. “The message that is being sent is the opportunity to have two unique and different experiences in the same trip.”
The authorities of both nations confide in the alliance’s success, in which the company Caribbean Ferries will play an important role.
Other areas
Puerto Rico Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock said that in addition to tourism, the agreement includes the energy sector. “We’ll be able to buy renewable sources of energy from Dominican Republic for consumption in and distribution and from Puerto Rico.”
The official added that the interchange includes the educative, cultural and social areas. “We see a great future in these relations with Dominican Republic.”

this is the future of tourism Packages that take in the whole Spanish Antilles ...now lets get rid of the Castro Brothers and open that country to freedom

The idea is great but I just don't see how the uniqueness of two very similar islands will complement each other. It is like going to McDonald for lunch and then going for dinner at Burger King. Yes, a little different but pretty much the same.

dr will benefit more because of the u s dollars from pr.but most ricans look down on domnicans the same way domnicans look down on hatians.

Imagine the cruise industry It is the same island over and over again they just go over to another side the next day over to another side but it is the same island ...just joking ....But the diversity and attractions are more interesting than the rest of the Caribbean which amount to just another little sand bar and a different Limbo Dancer

PR is way more dangerous than DR
From: Dominican Republic
I rather have this marriage than the one with septic Haiti. PR with their telescope and dollars (and less poverty), DR with it's pesos and Indian relics.
If I have two neighbors: One with dollars and the other with Gourdes. I will definitely integrate with the Dollars!

Music concert for Los Haitises
More than 20 musical performers are coming together for a concert in support of the preservation of Los Haitises, the singular karst region in northeastern DR, considered the main source of water for the south and eastern regions. The event is scheduled for Sunday, 19 July starting at 4pm at Plaza de Espana, in Santo Domingo's Colonial City. Several young composers are writing lyrics and music especially for the event. They join the grassroots movements campaigning to convince the Dominican Mining Consortium to relocate its cement plant to a less vulnerable location.

its not that they look down on us, its that they have a big ego problem, and they wrap temselves around their flag to boost it up and it is not all just some. the puertoricans who say this dont know what their talking about and are spreading false rumors. you have to be crazy to think they look down on us when were have become so succesful over therre, and everywhere else weve been in the United states including NEw York Miami and boston where Dominicans are the sole greatest small business owners contributing to the communities.
WHat is happening in Puertorico to the dominicans is similar to what happened to the cubans during the refuge crises. CUbans went over there and brought over salsa bacardi and much great culture and contributions, and what they got was hotility and threats from all the few but influencial egomanic puertoricans. what's happening now is that more puertoricans are bringing over dominican culture as they did with cuba, like bachata and presidente.

Puerto rico is moe heavily influenced by dominican and cuban cultre than it is of its native cultures, like the bomba and el jivaro. today it is full of slasa and bachata with cuban bacardi and dominican presidennte.

what the heck does puerto ricans looking down on dominicans have anything to do with this article?
From: United States
cuban barcardi first of all is not even popular in puerto rico. you actually see more puerto ricans drinking donQ an medalla light than presidente an bacardi.

thank you mirabel4 for bringing this up but it is true all inhabitants of the Spanish Antilles are very very similar but enjoy bickering and trying to show superiority over their sister islands it is a complex they all deny but it is evident to all outside observers superiority and inferiority complexes abound and it is easy to push a few buttons and get everybody stirred up
From: United States
fred for some reason i could never understand it. im dominican but i never grew up with this superiority crap over puerto ricans and cubans. my in laws are puerto rican for crying out loud an i absolutely love them. many things have bothered me through my experiences with the carribean nations i cant lie but i always come back to my senses and judge by the individual and not the nation.

Having lived in Boriquen and also having had a very long term relationship in PR and the Cubans of Miami I have encountered all of it ....Spaniards are the same way they all have so much in common and will keep fine tuning until they find something they can feel superior about no matter which part of the country they are from until it gets to mi pueblo or my village is better than yours it is human nature But in the Spanish Antilles it is an art form hahaha
