Santo Domingo.– Dominican Grupo Puntacana won the Destination Stewardship Award, carrier NatureAir of Costa Rica won the Conservation Award, and Marriott International picked up the Global Tourism Business Award in the 2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Travel companies and destinations have a chance to demonstrate best practice in sustainability to a worldwide audience. The 2009 awards broke new ground in recognizing the move of sustainablity into mainstream tourism, with awards going to a destination, an airline and a major hospitality group.

An international panel of judges will select nominees in four categories –destination stewardship, conservation, community benefit and global tourism business– with the awards presented at the WTTC Summit next spring following an onsite verification of the finalists.

How does a fat cat getting a phony award translate into progress for the Dominican majority?

This man is a world Leader in Tourism, and he is doing in the Dominican Republic. This translates to more job opportunities for the Dominican People ( as I have a few relatives who work for the Punta Cana Group), the world acknowledging that in the Dominican Republic theres a company which is a world leader in tourism, helps to bring in new capital into the country and world recognition.

As ive said many times b4, it has nothing to do with Leonel, PLD, PRD, PRSC or whomever is in power. I live in the Dominican Republic and I see that now is better than it was 10 years ago. If Hipolito was in power right now I would still be saying the same thing im saying now! I have no political preferences, I just see reality.

It may be better for you but the rest of the Dominican majority doesn’t wear rosy colored glasses and they are catching as much hell now if not more than ten years ago.

ojeda i will not tell you what to do but i can give you an advise if you like there are a few commies here in this site. for the most part they are realist who knows the utopia in this world is the way of capitalism but this josean is the most unapologestic commies in this site. reason with him is like talking to fidel. you know bla bla bla and when your turn to talk bla bla bla. he just hate all form of capitalism. dont pay attention just feed him a few mulito every now and then other than than just leave him amargado.

Man does not live on platano alone.

He must also have the money to buy them, even if they are 100 for a peso. They must have gas to cook them, water to boil them in, they must have electricity to see what he is eating.

And security on his way home from the “colmado” so he is not killed before he gets a chance to peel them!

maggiolo,

You said: "Anything that benefits the Dominican Republic is a gain to all Dominican People and even though this is in the private sector it is still a Dominican gain therefore my congratulations to the Punta Cana Group!"

I don't really get this comment. Are you a socialist or a commie? Governments are generally inefficient and don't typically work. Private enterprise rules and is best for all concerned: supply & demand sides.

Smallest gov is best, and its charge should be limited to: army & navy; minimal standardized educational requirements; road network and infrastructure; federal commerce laws; export/import; foreign policy; federal, uniform law code; very little else.

If you want gov doing everything for you, then move to Cuba, N. Korea or any of the other failed states. Yes, you could have your education, but where is your freedom and prosperity? Also, what good is an education without opportunity?

You misinterpreted my comment. I am not a against capitalism nor socialism. You can say I am in the middle. If the private sector has an iniative that will benefit the Dominican people with jobs, infrastructure etc I am for it 100%. The same goes for any initiative the government might have which will benefit the Dominican people. I would never want to see the Dominican Republic the way Cuba is today however I would like to see our Public Health as good as Cuba's as well as our Public Education.
