SANTO DOMINGO.- The crime rate in the in the country’s tourism zones has fallen to zero, affirmed Tourism Police (Politur) director Henry Gomez yesterday.
The official said the reduction took place since January, when the patrols in those zones increased. He said Politur currently has 1,150 agents, but 300 auxiliary police will be added next week.
Gomez spoke during the launch of Politur’s Website www.politur.gob.do, in coordination with the Presidency’s Office for Information and Communication Technology (Optic).

Alot of the Petty crimes do not get reported because the drunk tourist don't realize that they are missing some of their items until they are sober back home

This is the most blatently stupid statement this myopic Politur could ever utter. What in the country does he consider "tourist area"! Of course, I guess he must mean that they have not SEEN any crime. Politur seems to be the most worthless agency ever created. The media should be ashamed for even publishing this absurdity.

This is a total lie ...I have been told by many lawyers in la Romana that there are always many ,many pending cases of mainly petty crime committed in Casa de Campo and in Bayahibe . In many cases I understand the victims do not proceed with any litigation as it is waste of time .

What a joke. There is no place on the planet with zero crime and this guy has the intelligence to say something like this? Henry Gomez looks like a complete fool for saying this. The fact that he actually thinks anyone will believe this I find quite funny. I can't fathom how someone would say something like this and expect anyone to believe it not realize they have ruined their credibility by saying something so stupid.
He might as well just have said world hunger has been eradicated and AIDS and cancer have been cured.
What a moron.

I bought my daughter a day pass to a local all inclusive resort, she swam with friends and her jeans were stolen poolside as she swam. There were plenty of people around.

WOW !
That sounds like the U.S, especially around these hard economic times. Things are expected to get worse like Drug and Alcohol use and abuse, Thief's, Robberies, I.D Thief's, Burglary's and Swindles.
One must really take extra extra care, Poverty and Crime go hand in hand. .

Guys what they are saying is that its down to 0 in the sence that in the past there were armed homicides and robberies in tourist areas reported and now due to the increase in security and a more efficient job being done there are better results. I think it is good that they add more cops! As a matter of fact they need to add more cops throughout the whole island not just the tourist spots!

Ojedamaggiolo80,
Why hire more Police if..........We can even get ones already hired to do there jobs ! besides they there own Departments only hire Relatives and close Friends [or be well connected] from what I'm told anyway.
Police focus on the Tourist spots due to the fact that "That's where the Da Money is" the DR very dependent on those Tourist Dollars. I've been asked by Officers patrolling the Tourist spots for money many times and say their Monthly pay is very low.....Doe's bribes and pay-offs ring a bell ?
IT'S CALLED SUPPLEMENTAL PAY......
Take care.

I understand and I also agree with you that cops here do accept money and bribaries, but even in that aspect things are changing. Their salaries are being renewed and hopefully this time around they will be receive decent salaries. My point is that even though they accept bribery the fact that they are around is important and leads to less crime.
