Santo Domingo.– American Airlines has imposed a 30-day
bag embargo on all excess, oversize, and overweight baggage on flights
to Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic in an effort to ensure all customers’ bags are accommodated on their
scheduled flight.
This embargo will also apply to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when service
resumes there.
“American and American Eagle’s intent is to provide the best
customer service possible and to consider the needs of all passengers,”
said Peter Dolara, Senior Vice President - Mexico, the Caribbean and
Latin America. “There are limits on the amount of baggage that can be
carried in the cabin and cargo areas based on the size of the aircraft.”
The embargo will be in effect between Jan. 14 and Feb. 14, 2010.
For the next 30 days, customers traveling to these destinations will be
allowed to check two pieces of baggage of normal checked-bag size and
weight – up to 50 pounds and 62 dimensional inches each. Customers will
also be allowed one properly sized carry-on bag.

So nothing has really changed. I have flown into POP numerous times in the last year and these were always the rules. (One time over 50lbs CH-CHING)!

My guess is that they are anticipating more cargo with relief supplies, so they need the extra carrying capacity in the belly.

First bag up to 50 was free on international flights was free. Second bag cost dinero and anything over 50lb mas dinero. This is not new, it usually runs every year during Christmas.

it's not so bad...most European carriers now on short haul charge for ANY hold baggage (€30 a piece), so 50kg free is pretty good. And im no great fan of AA, three out of the last 10 flights ive had with them pop-mia have been cancelled.

AA can make more money by weight hauling relief supplies than baggage.

Spirit charges less, but it adds back up when they charge for the two bags.. which make the prices near the same. I tried Spirit twice already and I doubt I'll use them again.
First, there is non stop service from closest airports. La Guardia or Atlantic City NJ, and they layover could be lenghty and no service from Philly my closest airport, nor Newark.
Second, I am 6 foot tall, about 200 lbs (not fat) and I barely have leg room, it was exremely uncoftable.
Third, they charge for all bags.
Fourth, no movies
Fifth, no food.
After summarizing everything, I rather pay an extra $20 or $50 per ticket, drive another half hour or so and take Continental via Newark, enjoy a movie and a small portion of food during my flight. Its probably even better to drive another 20-30 mins more and take a direct flight from AA from JFK.
In my case, its just not worth it.

lovingit,
I am 6 ft too... yes its kind of tight, but for me its still the best option. All carrieres charge for the second bag and delta now is charging for both. Jetblue has the best onboard service but its more expensive and I have a 3 hour layover in NYC... Hey, as long as I make it to DR and have more $$$ for ice cold presidentes thats all that matters

A third of Americans are now classified as obese, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. But the width of a coach airplane seat has changed little, remaining between 17 and 18 inches in most commercial planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration does not regulate seat width, but it does require passengers be able to sit belted and with both arm rests down to comply with safety standards.
Airlines could allow more luggage if passengers slimmed down!
Good news for those travelling Air France!
