SANTO DOMINGO.- The hundreds of Dominicans who live in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain and other countries have begun to return after the spending the holidays with to their relatives and though only one flight was cancelled in Las Americas International Airport, delays in arrivals and departures to various U.S. cities were reported yesterday.

Many fliers are in that terminal as the airlines, citing new norms demand they arrive three hours to check-in before their flight.

Meanwhile the authorities have heightened the security measures in the revision of luggage and passengers before boarding the planes.

Jet Blue Flight 821, scheduled to arrive at At Las Americas from New York City at 10:50 a.m. was cancelled, whereas 822 which would also leave at noon to that city was also scrubbed, but that airline didn’t state the reason for the suspension.

Unofficially it was learned that most of the slight delays are the result of the stricter measures in the United States after a Nigerian citizen allegedly tried to set off an explosive aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

Took a flight out of the DR last week. Forgot to put my Swiss Army knife in my suitcase. Passed it through with my other pocket items, clearly visible, expecting it to be confiscated. Of course the security guard was just standing there, pretending to do his work and never looked. I made sure to pack it when I was leaving. I know that real security guards would check.

By the way.....New Dominican scam for flying. Request a wheelchair to take to departure gate. There are no questions asked, and you get to board before everyone else. My plane had 14 people boarding using wheel chairs. Getting off there were only 5 wheelchairs requested. Either it was a miracle flight or 9 of those people didn't feel like waiting.

Los monos necesitan tiempo para re-training.....you can't just send them a notice and expect them to committ the new procedures to memory....their brains are used to sending repetative signals to muscles that do repetative tasks..

Anything NEW will have to be reinforced everyday for three weeks befor it becomes habit...that being said, ask any of them what paid days off they get, and everyone of them can spout off the day and date.

Just returned from the DR to Newark on Continental and there are brand new measures in place.
After the metal detector stage and the passport control, every person has to go through a mandatory inspection of all carry ons before getting into the waiting area. Each and every part of my bag was opened and looked at.
Then, I was given a pat down.
Even a woman in a wheel chair had to go through the same inspection.
This will cause delays.
Let's see how long the new rules last.

Even in Newark, the Customs people seemed less concerned about drug enforcement than previous. I think they have a new worry with limited resources and focus.

Problem here seems to be ACCOUNTABILITY. Something which they know nothing about. If that guard would of been personally held accountable for everything that passes through his screen he would definitely pay more attention, or get fired.

We had the usual security measures and the added opening of carry-on bags and a pat down each time we entered the gate area. Didn't seem too bad in time length. An Ecuadorean couple tried to not stop at the requested bag opening before immigration control and the guards made them return to have their baggage opened. Well done.
