Samana, Dominican Republic.- The alliance between Portillo Beach Club & Spa and The Registry Collection (TRC) development  will lead to a new model of tourist offer for the country, where the resort’s investors will have access to similar properties in luxury tourism destinations.

The Registry Collection is a program to interchange luxury houses, designed for upscale travelers, offering vacations in more than 160 properties around the world with more than 35,000 partners.

Portillo president Ramon Prieto said the interchange program constitutes a new modality in the national tourism offer, oriented to attract tourists with a strong buying power, with luxury properties, and who may opt to vacation in the country. “Through the interchange program Portillo Beach property owners may interchange their properties with owners of similar infrastructure in important destinations such as the United States, Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Canada, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Thailand, Uruguay, Mexico, among others.”

“This type of tourism business model exalts the Dominican Republic as a luxury destination and places us as an attractive interchange option for TRC partners with a high buying power,” Prieto said.

It is not very likely that visitors to this luxury development will travel far out of the Samana peninsula but it will bring some more currency into the country and I hope some classy and not tacky secondary businesses are built nearby to eke out the pesos or dollars from the pockets of the well healed .I also think that with such an upmarket project there will be less chance of environmental problems.

The DR is not considered the most luxurious island in the Caribbean. Most people visit because it is one of the cheapest for a vacation. People trying to kid themselves and call themselves upscale are in for a rude awakening. I see this all the time where some business opens and calls themselves upscale and charges more for everything. According to them they can since they only want customers who can afford their prices. I have news for you even people with money dont want to pay more for something they can get right next door cheaper. There is a reason most of these people are able to keep their money. Because they are careful with how they spend it. We can wake up and smell the coffee now or later it doesn't matter. We will be forced to face reality eventually.

Keep on murdering your visiting tourist-clients and then you wonder where the market has gone.

What is being reported on these murders is only the bare minimum under the DR constitution freedom of the press.

The DR is the low and bottom end of the market for tourisim. You get the bottom of the scum barrel.

Will it ever change? Never as long as there is drug trafficking and tourist murders go unchecked.

Lets also not forget Dengue, malaria, animals as drivers on the road and corrupt police officals trying to squeeze you for money and the low grade food you get at the hotels.

Admit to your faults and then fix your problem until then I stand by by remarks as the DR being the armpit of the carribean.

In a statement, Immigration said 2,730 Dominicans were deported from the U.S. last year, mostly for trafficking drug. “According to statistics that amount of deportees is the highest since 2000.”

Why does Jim Harrington bother posting his usual banal remarks that are seem to be the result of some inbuilt hatred of the DR ..better to find a country that you enjoy !!

Veronica ...you are totally incorrect in your assessment of the tourist industry as it is now ...you may have been correct about 6 years ago and still maybe correct in relation to the Puerta Plata area ,,but in the east ,,there is a huge market for wealthy tourists who are prepared to pay big dollars ,,especially in la Romana,Bayahibe and Punta Cana and soon in the Samana Peninsula with the Cisneros development ..You seem to be in the wrong area at present as far as the economy and tourism is concerned .

It really does not matter what all the sceptics write here ,,,the simple fact is that tourismis doing very well in the east in the luxury and in the bargain levels and will continue to grow thanks to the investors taking a positive attitude ...it is only when you sit on your backside do nothing but critisize that things appear bad ..It is about time Puerta Plata woke up and did some really good improvements and promotions

JimHarrington... Pull your head out of your a$$.. The drugs that come threw here go to the US...
The murder capital of the world.... you wrote we have corrupt police officals.... That is your HOUSE and Senate...... The US has more people on drugs, more murders per capita and the most corrupt government in the world.. Just because the money comes from a lobbyist you do not call it a bribe..
So go back to living in your little dream world... If you dislike the DR then why are you reading on posting on this DR site... AND YES I AM A AMERICAN...

Ricardo,

the first improvement in POP would be to stop the relentless rain that plagues the area from December to March year in year out.

Then, we could talk about renovating hotels, getting rid of the beach vendors, street hustlers, motocoños, prostitutes and the like, investing in the old city of POP so tourists would be attracted to its history, and taking care of environmental issues such as unbreathable air downtown, stinky cañadas that carry tons of garbage ending up on the shore of the malecon, and so on and so forth.

Then and only then, an effort cold be made to convince tour operators and travel agencies to sell the destination. Nobody comes to POP because the destination is not being promoted by the very people that take tourists to the island.

Unfortunately, rightfully so.

prmilv,

Typical Dominican hubris, entitlement macho mentality response.

You have it so we can have it. Moron.

In the US we at least send people to ‘real’ jail. Dominicans do NOTHING.

How embarrassed should you be about the “Army Major who has been linked to the murder” , deported from the US on crack charges, having a job with the Government and spending the public money.

I couldn’t show my face, but Dominicans are shameless, they are not embarrassed one bit. Because they are taught to accept this crap.

He’ll get a medal of honor.

WalterPolo ,,yes you are correct in your assessment of POP ,,for decades the hotels and the operators took millions of dollars and never spent a peso on any renovations or improvements ,,and the golf course there is a classic example .I would not like to spend a night in POP but like Sosua, Cabarete and all the places going east .
However,as you point out ,the situation could be rectified if there was a proper plan worked out relating to making the area more attractive .
Can not do anything about the weather ..can ask Leonel to assist !!..and enjoy the beach vendors
