SAMANA, Dominican Republic. - President Leonel Fernandez on Thursday headed the inaugural ceremony for the resort Puerto Bahia, built at a cost of 100 million dollars, in the country’s northeastern Samana Peninsula, the latest in a series of major hotel complexes built in the pristine region.

The president of the resort’s proprietary company Playa Dosú S.A., Juan Bancalari, and Jose Garcia Armenteros, president of the developer group Garcia Armenteros, accompanied the chief executive in a tour of the project.

Bancalari congratulated Fernandez for what he called the chief executive’s vision to support the country’s tourism, with the construction of roads, aqueducts and maritime facilities.

Puerto Bahia has 185 luxury homes including villas, apartments and town houses, as well as the hotel The Bannister.

The ministers of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, and of Public Works, Victor Diaz Rúa also attended.

That,s all that Leonel is good for now, cutting ribbons.

100 million dollars is a lot of money for a resort that won't be open all year round.

I trust that the Domincan monetary board reviewed the source of the money.

Yes...so they all can afford to pack into a 6 passenger van... all 14 of them and go enjoy a day at the beach....oh wait...there are no beaches accesible for the worker.

More $100-$200 jobs in a country who's prices for goods equal or exceed the countries these investors come from, thus widening the survival gap for many who would now have a job...but not enough income to survive off of.

Progress is great only if everyone moves forward.

I do not see this happening and as a result, find myself looking over my shoulder a bit more.

I see the Dominican haters are out in force today led by Jim H and you are correct ..DONT BE SILENT ..these guys are not even here so who cares a damn about all their desires to belittle the DR ...and it is the duty of the country where the money comes from to do the checking for money laundering as it is near impossible for the incoming country to do the checks .
100 millions more dollars into the Dominican economy and I say thank you to the investors and I hope all goes well with the venture .

Ricardolito,
This is where your stupidity shows.

The incoming money into a bank must always be labeled bona fide funds from the outgoing bank.
The incoming bank then must notify the central bank of its entry.

this project is a large project that will benefit the area and samana as a whole. It is beautiful and unless it damages the enviroment is a good thing for samana

Jim H the outgoing bank has the responsibility ,,,that is exactly what I wrote and what you have agreed with .The incoming bank has no chance of finding out anything .so why suggest that the DR banks may be failing on any of their duties ,, just another opportunity for you to rubbish the DR !!

So what is their definition of pristine?

This is a very nice project and wish them all the best. But $100MM USD?? Who came up with that number? Talking about inflating numbers ! If indeed, the project has that much invested, there is no way the shareholders/partners will see any ROI in this lifetime (that is my take). To me, it appears that many in the DR have little concept of value. Or possibly the funds just came very easily to the few who don't really undertsand investments. The water flow through the Samana Bay is from the West to East. The Yuna river is filthy as is most of the Sanchez area, the headwaters for the tidal flow in front of this project .

$100M??? Is that US or RD dollars?

What did the workers make as wages? Like PuntaCanaMike stated, "progress is great only if everyone moves forward".

How can so much money be flaunted by the 'developers' and 'resort owners", and yet poverty is the way of lfe in the D.R. ? The rich and corrupt get richer and more corrupt, and the rest get less and remain poor.

The culture does not change in the D.R. It is all about those with money and let the rest fend for themselves. A thrid world country with little chance to change its culture. Those at the top will not let it change - why should they give up what they have to help others? Too much selfishness and corruption. They will eventually self implode - for they are too narcisstic to really help those that need it.
