SANTO DOMINGO. - The hotels and restaurants grouped in Asonahores decry the wretched condition of the country’s highways, which they affirm considerably harms the tourism industry.
Its president Haidée Kuret on Thursday said the capital Santo Domingo loses thousands of tourists every year, because the highway to the Bavaro-Punta Cana area, which accounts for more than 50 percent of the visitors, isn’t fit to drive.
She said the tourists in Bavaro and Punta Cana who visit Santo Domingo must leave no later than 7 a.m. from, spend four hours in a bus, two in city tours, more than one hour to eat and later another four more on the return trip. "That tour is not for everyone."
Kuret said as long as the country doesn’t have an adequate road system the tourists will stay away, noting that people don’t visit countries to spend their time on a highway.
Interviewed by Pablo McKinney on CDN 2, the tourism leader stressed Public Works minister Victor Diaz’s interest in working on the highways which link the tourism regions.
"We often have areas where the highways should’ve been already done and today the work is at a crawl, but it’s an investment with a return. And that’s the point, they are investments which will return money to the country, it will flow from one zone to another and will improve our competitiveness," the Asonahores president said.
Regarding transportation, Kuret called Dominican Republic’s competitiveness level "extremely low" in Central American and the Caribbean, which it includes roadways, because it is only now when they are being improved.

I have to agree the road infrastructure in the Dom.Rep. leaves a lot to be desired, my having traveled Punta Cana to Sto.Dgo. on many occasions confirms the article. Because if I were a tourist I would not want to travel the roads in the conditions they are now in. The government should at least improve the signage along the routes and reduce road hazards in areas they have not improved. It needs to return some of the tax revenue gained from tourism into the infrastructure.
The hotel and restaurant association on its part should sponsor some of the signage and road hazard improvements in recognition of the tax breaks the industry receives.

It's stupid not to invest in this infrastructure. With it come all kinds of opportunity: tourism; jobs; taxes to pay for schools and health care, etc; etc.
If dominicans clearly realize the importance of good roads, they would be out protesting every day until situation is redressed. Perhaps some have, but have gone unnoticed.

I suppose garage mechanics aren't making enough money to buy off politicians, prevent road repairs and assure a constant stream of business.
Where in heck does all that borrowed money for infrastructure go to? Mr. President, please enlighten us?
BTW, other than the ubiquitous photos and the frequent overseas trips, what exactly does our president do? I never really hear news about he responding to the issues of the moment. He seems distant and preoccupied with a legacy that most of us couldn't care less about. He seems more intent in securing a future UN leadership position than in fulfilling demands of his present job. What a bum.
Worst of all, he is likely to leave the country broke and with much debt.

This statement from this woman is absolute and complete nonsense and is so easy to prove wrong .Firstly the road from the capital to San Pedro de Macoris is first class with four lanes and from San Pedro to la Romana the new bridge over Rio Soco should be ready by Easter and then nearly all the way will be four lanes . There is a bottle neck in la Romana until the by pass is finished but from la Romana to Higuey the road works on the Coral Highway are going along very fast and from just outside Higuey the road to Bavaro is first class and the continuation of the Coral Highway to Punta Cana is also going well.
When we look at the other route from near the airport to Nagua ,there is a four lane highway which is dangerous but only for those speeding ,from Nagua to Samana there is a new road being built . The road from the capital to Santiago is also four lane as is the road most of the way to Bani . So the west and from Santiago to Cabrera need to be improved .

So when you look at everything that has been done or is being done ..you have to wonder why a tourist officer can issue such a negative statement which is totally inaccurate ..,,I would replace her immediately and get some one who can be positive and encourage tourism .

Ricardolito you are forgetting how long this Coral Highway has been in the making. She is totally right, I for one will never ever go back to Bavaro or Punta Cana while the roads are in that condition. The San Pedro road was done many years ago. Take a drive to Costambar beach in POP and you will shoot yourself on the way over to the resort, its just disgusting. Try getting over to POP, Cabarete and Sosua there is not a single good road to do this. The road from Santiago to Sosua has mostly fallen into the abyss. The road from Moca to Cabarete is falling in some places and in others there are some displacements about a foot high by now. The road to POP from Navarrete is very dangerous, filled with potholes and poorly built. The road to Punta Rusia has been abandoned for about 6 years now. This road would open up a whole other region to tourism and commerce, but who cares about all those poor people that would benefit from that??

You could build all the roads you want but if there isn't a good maintenance plan in place they would soon fall into disrepair and full of potholes.
I understand we mostly borrow money to build these roads, but where does money for maintenance come from? I doubt money from tolls alone would suffice. Road work is expensive and necessary, but money must be available and come from somewhere. Government must raise revenues for this purpose through usual means and levy of taxes. It is not really possible to have our cake and eat it too. If we want good healthcare and infrastructure and schools, then we must raise the funds to pay for it, sustain it. There is no really free lunch, unless you are a leech like "Mucho Loco".
So, if we want all these things, let's start paying Juda what's Juda's, but let's hold him fully accountable-under threat of public hanging, if necessary.

sajomero...yes I agree that the Coral Highway has taken too long but is going gang busters now and making up for lost time .As I am sure you are aware the original contract was terminated and new contractors awarded the contract in a very strange manner .I toally agree about the road from Puerta Plata to Cabarete but there has been more progress in the upgrading of the roads than ever before ..This is a simple statement of fact and nothing to do with politics which I have little interest in .
