SANTO DOMINGO.- Around 15,000 foreign tourists and new species have visited the Marine Mammal Sanctuary in Samaná (Dominican northeast) since January 15, in the current humpback whale watching season, the Environment Ministry said today.

The figure is 30 percent higher than the first weeks of the 2009 season, and sets a record in attendance, said Whale Observation Program local coordinator Peter Sanchez in a statement.

Hundreds of humpback whales come to Samaná Bay every year from Iceland, Greenland, Canada and the United States north coast, to mate and give birth.

Sanchez added other species have also been observed that in the current season such as sperm whales and sharks, "which means that the safety and quality of the ecosystem make these species feel safe and remain in the country’s Marine Mammals Sanctuary."

I think so, they keep going back up apparently without papers, so they send them here again.

Year in year out.

Mucho Loco [aka abc] foes back to DR to mate every spring and no one has noticed or cared-not even the cueros!

On the serious side, yet another sign that God has designated DR a piece of paradise. We are so lucky indeed to have these creatures visit us once a year. We are "Cannandogan" [the chosen place in Iroquois Indians language!].

Dominicans, please be respectful of these marvelous creatures and protect them.

The whales have been coming to the Silver Banks off Samana before there were any humans on the island. When they were hunted they still came.
They are Whales. not some kind of superior being.

BTW I hear they are good eatin'.

@AnthonyC,

YEAH GREAT !!! to your Info Every Living-Being is a superior Being !!!
Weren't for them all, life had proven to be IMPOSSIBLE.
If they were first why shouldn't 'em be first ???

If you care about yourself then you must care about life first !!!
And please, don't pretend to educate me, you would be very grateful if a U-Boat give you a sonar ping under thousand feet water pressure in your brain and you would be very pleased if someone cut off your members and throw your body back to the water.

God give us human a universe of wisdom but we lack to understand the complexity of a simple ATOM !!!

and please one more time: don't pretend with me !!! hoping you understand a simple thing ...

Humpback Whales or Sperm Whales are not endangered. They number in the 10's of thousands.
They are animals. Nothing more. Nothing less. I whale is on the same level as a Rat , pigeon or a slug.
That level is below Humans.

I would personally drop depth charges on every whale in the seas if I knew it would save even one Aids infected, Crack whore who voted for Obama.

Don't even think about educating me about nature. I have forgotten more about what is in our oceans than you will ever know. I know your type. You watch animal planet and think you are a expert. You wouldn't last 1 day in the wild. You couldn't tell the difference between Fin and a Sei whale.

Of course we eat the whale. Its about the best meat you can get, low on calories and very tasty. Still got 6kgs in the freezer - want me to bring some for your BBQ?

They were endangered the day I paid $100 to go out and see them last week. I think within 40 minutes we saw two for probably 30 seconds. Then the chumming began. I told her not to eat the fish, but naaawwwwwww, "I don't get sick". You just feed the animals by regurgitating like the penguins.....more money wasted.

STOP TRYING TO WHITE WASH THE ISSUE....

The kiling of whales is wrong by any standards...

by the way...Did you feed any stray dogs today????

Just as I thought....All mouth and no brains.

Grosero,
By whoms standards????? What does whales have that bulls dont have? or any other animals we are feeding on. Enlighting us. btw we do not have any stray dogs around - everyone with a dog here would be fined if they made their dog a stray dog, and yes last time I was around a dog, with the owners acceptance, I gave the dog my last meatcake. The dog seemed to appreciate it a lot.
Happy independence day.
