SANTO DOMINGO. – The number of passengers aboard regular flights rose by more than 473,000 in the first quarter compared with the same 2009 period, a 7% jump, the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) revealed Wednesday.

It also announced an increase in the number of flights by 1,225, a 7.5% climb.

JAC president Luis Paulino Rodriguez said the number of passengers on regular and charter flights in the first quarter increased by 126,042, for a 4.8% increase. In addition there were 2,240 more air operations than the same 2009 period.

He said in the first quarter new airlines have been authorized to operate in the country, including VRG, Linhas Aéreas, S.A. with a permit to fly from Brazil to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo; and British Airways, PLC, with flights from London to Punta Cana (east).

Rodriguez also said several companies were allowed to expand flight services including Air Canada, for Toronto-La Romana; Halifax-Samaná and Montreal-Samaná/Montreal, whereas Corsairfly will ply the Nantes-Fort de France-Punta Cana route.

Jet Blue will also expand its service to include the routes New York-Punta Cana and Boston-Punta Cana.

The official added that the JAC’s immediate plans include a negotiation of new flight agreements with Uruguay, Paraguay, India and Kuwait.

We all know the true reason for a 7% increase in passengers is the post earthquake travel to Haiti. Thousands of relief workers and Haitian expatriates understood the only way to get to Haiti was travelling through the DR. As the Port au Prince airport returns to active status we will see a decrease in passenger travel.

They are not talking about relief worker flights or relief flights. I think the reports clearly states regular flights and some airlines already expanded their services of regular flights. Although I could be wrong and relief flights and regular flights are considered to be the same thing.
