Santo Domingo. - Dominican Republic’s entry into category one in the civil aviation system certifies the country’s security levels, to the point  that as many as 300 charter flight operations occur every 15 days and has increased the number of locally based airlines.

It has also allowed more local airlines to fly to the United States, which provided 3.9 million passengers last year, said Civil Aviation Board (JAC) president Luis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said the approval of Law 491-06 allowed the country to reach that category, together with technical improvements and in human resources, as evidenced by more participation of national carriers in the United States.

He said improved airport structures established the bases for tourism’s expansion. “Now with category there’s major security, you can fly with any company and be safe because they are well supervised and well maintained. We managed to get the highest number of national air lines to fly to the United States.”

Although the Board’s private sector representative called a transcendental step, he acknowledged that international investments in airlines to serve major capitals have yet to arrive.

Arturo Villanueva said this has led Punta Cana Airport, where the 52 percent of the country’s flights arrive, to work in the construction of second runway.

He said another group began the construction of an aerodrome in Miches (northeast), and would make Dominican Republic the Caribbean country with the most airports.

OK, I guess that the plane that mysteriously took off with unidentified passangers and made a last minute flight adjustment without the OK of the flight tower, violating all aviation rules and laws,didn't happen.

It must have been a movie I was watching!!!! I'M GOING CRAZYor SOMETHING.

This is a very nice article. Am really glad that The Dominican Republic has such rating which translates into jobs and better infrastructures that will benefit all of us. However, I am not glad to read those negative comments written by those that while they think that they are being funny, in fact are hurting us. Please, LETS BE DOMINICANS FIRST. Then we can try to be comedians,cynical, etc. May God Bless our Dominican Republic.

well , hidalgo, since you seem to be so wounded by the negativity and the wry humour, maybe you can begin by providing the list of Dominican airlines that fly to the USA. the article said it, not I. if you accept all the horsecrap which is said by these guys, then i feel badly for you.

The story also mentions 3.9 million passengers. The story talks about tourism and expansion. To me, and the average dominican citizen, is a PLUS. I have some past experience in the airline industry. I assure you, there is a lot of dotting (i's) and crossing (t's). And, it is my hope that the in the near future that many airlines will have Dominican Republic as their home base. The category one rating is not only for airlines, but it also means a lot of jobs for aviation mechanics. They will be dominicans earning a living under said category/title. Lets give the benefit of the doubt to the situation. Lets start giving a positive image (in whaever way we can) of our great country. May God Bless our Great Dominican Republic.

It has also allowed more local airlines to fly to the United States,

when the news of air dominicana hit the forum, i opined that it was an insane idea to enter into the airlines race at this particular point in time, when established carriers were dropping like flies. oh, no, they told me. we have a business model that is superior to those guys, and we will be a rip roaring success. well, i am waiting. i wish them well, since a rising tide floats all boats.

Some are looking at the glass half empty. Lets try to be part of the SOLUTION . One can make a small contribution by being DOMINICAN FIRST. Lets keep OUR problems IN-HOUSE. We are stronger together. Enough with the cynicism. Lets try to contribute something. God Bless The Great Dominican Republic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to put LIE-onel Fernandez dirty drawers out on the line for the world to see but people have the right to know!

DR is worse of than Greece!

Deterioro deuda soberana RD pone en duda emisión bonos

No the J in J.P Morgan is not josean.

What's your point Josean,

Haiti doesn't even have a government. You guys are living off of the DR and the NGO's.

Yes, the DR has its shortcommings and?

The DR is definitely moving forward btu with obvious obstacles.

You always go off topic bringing up BS that's not related to the topic.

The fact that DR has 1 rating is a great accomplishment. Its mean our airports are secure, our people are trained and capable and we have airports that are par with the rest of the developed world.

Citizens benefit from the airport ratings because we have numerous international flights that allow our citizens to who are global people and also allow for tourist to visit our country and contribute to our economy.

DR will have a large international airline, it's just a matter of time. In the DR, there are numerous airlines that fly to haiti and other caribbean islands, venezuela, and colombia.

All the major airlines in DR are making it harder to create a national carrier.

My point is, this is all nonsense it means absoluetly nothing to the average domincan's daily life:

No first world education for students at any level;

No electricity 24/7;

No security anywhere in the country from crime for nationals or tourist unless you want to be imprisoned in an all inclusive boring resort;

No adequate health care;

No adequate supply of water in most of the country;

No affordable housing;

No affordable loans to purchase houses or cars;

Are those enough points for you Mr. On Topic?
