Santo Domingo.- Are the tourism regions a sort of shielded cities fortified against the country’s violence levels, trash, lack of infrastructure and “Haitianization” in hotel zones?
Is the sector which has managed to grow for 7 consecutive months contrary to what occurs in other nations of the region armored?
For the vice president of hoteliers and restaurateurs grouped in Asonahores, Arturo Villanueva, the lack of security doesn’t affect the resorts since in his view that part is armored. "We are the Caribbean’s best tourist quality-price product," noting that competitors such as Puerto Rico charge US$400 daily just for one room.
The business leader however affirms that when the main emitters face times of crisis no one chooses the most expensive vacation, and instead the one which has the best relation of quality, price, service and hospitality.
He admits the country’s deficient infrastructure but affirms it’s being solved. As to the lack of security Villanueva discards it since most major resorts are in very remote locations.
The tourists don’t remain in the hotels, affirms Villanueva, because of the complementary attractions such as golf, yachting, visits to Saona, Catalina islands, and to protected areas such as Los Haitises.
He also cited the Civil Aviation Board’s open-door policy on air navigation, which he affirms has benefited the country, with an increase in the number of flights and has prompted the airports to expand and increase operations.
Villanueva added that the industry’s growth even during the global financial crisis isn’t the result of magic and instead because Dominican Republic has the best and most airports in the entire Caribbean, and the Tourism Ministry’s efforts to attract tourists.

The developments in the east to the contrary, we have built a hugely successful tourist industry by appealing to an audience that wants to spend as little as possible to have a vacation. Our all inclusive resorts offer exactly that. Warm weather, all you can eat buffets, no tipping necessary, all the booze you can drink, and really low prices in comparison to most vacation destinations, make the DR the haven for people who want to do it on the cheap. We have almost locked up that market.
Now, wisely, we are going after the affluent vacationers and not putting them anywhere near the all inclusive hotels. The tourist industry (may I point out that it is a PRIVATE INDUSTRY) is by far the best run industry that we have.
From: United States
once more, we have heard how many tourists are visiting, but we have no figures on how much they spend, how long they stay, what it costs to house aech tourist, how much of the money is repatriated , and such other important considerations. footfall is not the major component. there is no point in a million people coming here if they all spend 100 dollars, of which we keep 19 cents of each dollar.

I don't get the point of this article. The Hotels are by their very nature insulated from the problems that face the rest of the nation. It's a moot point. It should be obvious.
Also if you want to pay less for a room in PR you can. Not all Hotels charge $400 a night. Just like you can get Hotels in Punta Cana that charge very close to $400 a night.
What worries me is the lack of foresight with the rest of the way tourism is handled in the country. Puerto Plata is going down the tubes. Ecotourism is a potential gold-mine that is being mishandled and is very loosely organized...

Regarding the comment on Statistics.
The DR only has the worthless data put out by the Central Bank. Good for a Banana Republic but not a country whose economic engine is tourism. The reason that the Hotels don't have organized data based on loyalty programs is that their Tour Operators prohibit the harvesting of personal data and any direct contact used by loyalty programs. Thus we are clueless about the repeat business which I believe is the real proof of a destinations success and we don't really know guest satisfaction scores. Personally I believe that guest satisfaction scores are not very good and repeat visitors amount to less than 10% based on the cheap tourist formula of "who cares if they come back, they'll always be another smuck willing to take a trip based on price. Tourism in the DR is a ship with out a rudder and broken oars and I love how other country's come to copy this abomination of All Inclusive Poison.
From: Dominican Republic
oh yes, asphalt paving...So, Avenida España (from Friusa to Plaza Punta Cana crossroad) is finished, just before elections. So they brought again trucks on that crossroad just to sit there and it seams like they are working (and they are not working, its a theater).
What about paving from corner of entrance of Cortecito to the corner of Los Corales (plaza El Dorado)?
What about the garbage left after the construction of Plaza Globalia, in front of the plaza? They cleaned their construction and they left all garbage from marble packages in front. Well this is the only Plaza anyway that constructed sidewalks and street lights at once. The same as they did in Cabeza de Toro.
Speed bumps, if you have a car, then you know how much damage is coming from speed bumps.
Also, we do not have a real Park in Punta Cana, country so green and easy to grow plants, and no place to take kids for a walk.
If you think that the life is running around with big jeeps, then you are wrong.

like Chico I cannot understand the point of this article ..but I have noticed the large amount of road paving in the east ..coming just before the election ..it makes driving rather boring not having to duck and weave around the holes .
From: Dominican Republic
They did not pave the roads on last elections as nobody votes in Punta Cana, but in their home towns. Now we have elections for sindicos, thats is why they are paving roads.
Take Higuey as example, before it was Serengeti, now flat roads and no holes.
New highway Bulevar Turistico, also is under work, and was sitting still since Leonel made inauguration, last year.
If we have elections every month, everything would be okay.

I agree with Chico. I too don't get the point of this useless article. Yes I believe the tourist areas are and should be "shielded cities........." I think if you look across the world - yes the world - many of the "tourist areas" are shielded from the rest of country. Some of you are just so ignorant that you Just really don't understand. Most tourists coming to beach - do not and are not interested in seeing the whole rest of country. They want beautiful beach, good dining, and very good service (this needs to be worked on a bit - at least in greedy Punta Cana) and cleanliness.
From: Dominican Republic
Were you ever a tourist?
Tourists wants great service, and nice memories.
Mostly, tourists like to explore the country, to get familiar with local food and customs, besides sitting all day at the swimming pool or at the beach.
That's why excursions in Punta Cana are floreshing a lot, tours to Santo Domingo, Altos de Chavon, Isla Saona, horse beck riding, ATV tours, Ocean Park, Manati Park etc.
For example, hotels in El Cortecito, Carabela, Cana beach - Barcelo, Dominican Beach - Barcelo have access to Cortecito area and Los Corales. You can see all day long tourist walking up and down the beach. Plaza Shopping Mall Palma Real is full of tourists mostly from Paradisus, Melia Caribe and Melia Tropical.
I have seen many times tourists walking from Cortecito to Palma Real (Hard Rock Cafe, Tony Romas, Akai Sushi...) and there is not a sidewalk.
Tourist like to walk around with their cameras and make memories. Well, you need to live here to understand better.

My wife is from Puerto Plata. You can go there with highway, or even better over the mountain from Santiago, small villages, super views. There is a nice restaurant on the hight of 1km overlooking Santiago and Moca. Camp David.
Punta Cana is flat area, mountains you have between Higuey and Uvero Alto. Better views you have looking to Sabana del Mar from mountains.
There should be also a road connecting Sabana del Mar with Samana, going around the bay. Passing Seibo everything is clean and nice green fields. Also going from Macao trough Saiba (not Seibo) and then turnig right to La Vacama (or Lava Cama) and Nisibon.

Now I see at the begining of the articel: "country’s violence levels"
What's that? Dominicans are not violent people at all.
Other thing is collecting garbage in urban zones, but that is what Zooberto should think about.
Every single poor neighbourhood in Santo Domingo has no proper "garbage collecting" that government should do, look what is happening to Ozama river in Santo Domingo.
Streets should be washed out when the garbage truck pass.
Sewage system? All this wastewater flows should be treated.
There should be a gov. plan of building residential areas for people from "barrios" for free, and relocating families to normal homes. It is very easy to calculate budget for this, instead of spening so much money on elections.
Or should we wait for big Eartquake or strong Hurricane season?

I have seen many times tourists walking from Cortecito to Palma Real (Hard Rock Cafe, Tony Romas, Akai Sushi...) and there is not a sidewalk.
Tourist like to walk around with their cameras and make memories. Well, you need to live here to understand better.
Why should Puerto Plata be on the bottom end??? You can not get the views of the Cibao mountains in Punta Cana like you can in Puerto Plata... Puerto Plata has real beauty and should be cleaned up... Build the bargin resorts in Barahona"
xwill I agree but at this point that just isn't practical as much I would like for that to happen. PP is beautiful and it is where my family is from.
Dominicans are very clean persons and even in poor villages, you will never see garbage on the streets.
Skysail comment is on the money.
Once again if an article was written in a NYC area that the NYPD or NYC was being DOMINICANIZED!!! you would scream bloody racism.
the power of words.
Again boys and girls it's called word association and it's wrong.
All educated Dominicans should say no need for that type of journalism.
It was wrong when the US use to do it (50s, 60s, 70s, 80, early 90s) to blame everything wrong on minorities and its wrong when its done here.
also: cbelk99, You come across as a semi literate pompous jackass. Typical response of someone who is ahem at the bottom of the totem pole in their own country.
haitianization= too many Haitians.Do you get it NOW.
I'm so glad business ppl are realizing what's going on with the haitianization problem in DR?
I saw it in the news as well. The government will start taking into account all kinds of complaints coming from all sectors. I just hope they solve this problem as soon as possible. The country is simply truning horrible. We need to write to the media, to the government, to all sources so they realize we don't want DR unembellished, we want DR to be as beautiful as always.
QUE VIVA MI BELLA QUISQUEYA!!
America is a country of immigrants... DR already had its culture, history, and people... Now you have illegals coming in by the thousands and the Dominican lifestyle will start to fade... I do not hate Haitians but I do want to retire in DR someday... I would like DR to still have the same roots and Dominican style (which brings in so many tourists)... There will always be illegals... DR just needs to control it!
Well put. I agree having poor uneducated mass overwhelming a country is wrong and immigration should be controlled. It's a complex issue more complex than building a wall.
Its when you dehumanize haitians I have a problem with. It's not just me other outsiders are telling you the same thing.
Haiti is destituteat the moment and I hope we get our shit together and catch up to the rest of the Americas.
What country in the world doesn't have influences from other parts of the world.
I'm sorry my comment didn't appear. If your Dr is so well off why are you living in the states? Doing jobs you think your too good to do in your country? LOL.
The int community I hope will do the right thing and stop with programs thats detrimental to haiti.
We're off topic this is about hotels in DR.
False sense off superiority MRS.
They will never catch up. It's an idiosyncrasy issue, all embedded in you when you are born. Furthermore, the environment that surrounds you.
See, it’ll take another 7 generations to correct this problem. By then, DR will be in so much trouble for bearing the Haitianization implosion. The hell with “We are all created equal” – when it comes to social, cultural, and religious issues, we are not!!
We need to wall up the border and send all Haitians back!! The same way they do with Dominicans from all over the world- NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Tell the world how your educated family teach you growing HAITIANS cook their children and eat them. Show the world your IQ.
Funny part is your an immigrant too. Crab in barrel mentality.
Im not trying to offend you with my comment, and if I did, I apologize. I do hope Haiti will catch up and be a prosper nation my friend, your country is full of good people, and I wish them nothing but the best.
Also, I left D.R. looking for a better opportunity in this great nation, I have done a lot of different thing here, from factory worker to construction, and for the last 7 years I work for Toyota Motor Company as a Parts expert certified. I would do anything except break the law my friend.
Remember it's a game both "elites" play to keep the people poor.
Work hard and live just my friend. Nothing wrong with not liking haitians your perogative. It's the sly underhanded comments.
Anyway this article is about hotels. I hope DR continues to prosper and Haiti catches up.
Whats that uppsot to mean?
You can express yourself anyway you want but when you dehumanize someone it's wrong.
I think you see I'm right since you can't formulate a good counter point you resort to your last comment.
Remember you're an immigrant. Crab in a barrel mentallity.
you are brilliant. everyone can see all my post. I won't respond to you. I see your conditioned by .... to spew nonsense about haitians. LOL. Haitians are the reasons youre in this predicament. LOL.
It's always people who are at the bottom of the social scale that resort to using words like haitianization. Educated professional Dominicans have better things going on.
I hope you find your calling. OK INTERNET THUG. LOL
That's not nice.
I am mentioning this only as Hohoho makes me laugh.
Now is the low season in Punta Cana, and hotels are offering lower rates, even Paradisus is 199 usd per night.
Besides the low season, there was 42 airplanes landed on Punta Cana airport today.
If you are looking for higher rates hotels (some people do), Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana is 694 usd per night. (Golden Bear is 312 usd).
Or Monarch Villa for 914 usd per night, and "cheaper" Tortuga bay 640 usd.
Then again you can still find 55 usd per night in some hotels in Punta Cana.
Please don't insult the stupid by comparing them to Hellborn. Shame on you.
Hellborn is ignant to the power of infinity, square x 2+1

says the man with who chooses to be called ignorance lol
noone cares how black you are or think you are. Your ignorance isn't based on your skin pigment. Please if that's what you take away from my comment and etienne then debating you is a moot point sir.
no what rubs me the wrong way about some of your comments is that you have a preconceived idea of dominicans regarding there relations with haitians..
I don't think Dominicans are racist against blacks. I think they're some are anti-haitian. I think most have that caribbean slave mentallity. Remember I said Caribbean. I saw a girl clearly black referring to herself as white. Remember I'm on the outside looking in.
My impression of Dominican was wrong I admit such on this site when I came back from Puerto Plata last month.
Tell me one Lie that I made and what rubbed you the wrong way.
PS, Etienne always defends the Dominican people and I told him I see why after I came back from my trip. Haitians and Dominicans are misinformed about each other to keep both sides at bay
youre right we agree to disagree.
