Jaime D. Fernandez in Cachon de la Rubia.
SANTO DOMINGO. - The Environment Ministry and the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster agreed to cooperate in seeking the area’s sustainable tourism development, based on the historic and cultural sights, and several little-known tourist attractions.
The pact, signed in a ceremony headed by Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and Cluster coordinator Freddy Ginebra, would spur the gradual development of urban ecotourism areas such as the park Mirador Oeste, which includes the Engombe Ruins, and the springs Los Tres Ojos and Cachón de la Rubia, and the Ozama estuary, with actions to boost responsible tourism among locals and foreigners.
Through the agreement, the Cluster will promote the city’s tourist activities and natural attractions and advise the Ministry’s personnel on marketing, while the latter pledges to participate as an active Cluster member and collaborate with advanced courses to teach citizens natural resources conservation.
Present in the event, - featuring images of Santo Domingo zones with ecotourism potential by nature photographer Jerry Bauer- were the representatives of the US Agency for International Development and of its program Dominican Alliance for Sustainable Tourism.

Thoughts and ideas:
1. Colonial Zone
a. Expand the Colonial Pedestrian section. Build Parking lots on the outskirts so people could get there
b. Zone first floors for businesses only (make the place an Outlet)
c. Give all buildings a facelift and install standard signage
d. Run those FREAKING utilities wires UNDEGROUND.
The colonial zone should look more like the Woodbury Common Outlets in NY:

3. How about a beach nearer than Boca Chica? Guibia is too dirty due to the Ozama and the sewers, so I doubt that could ever be clean unless that whole mess is fixed (including how the river flows), but they Could build the beach by Manresa. This would give a beach on West side of the bridge (where most hotels are) Yes, I hear that there is Plan for a Sans Souci beach, but I think the West Side part would be better for a beach anyways.
These would at least be a start.

How about instead of turning every city or town into a tourist destination just turn the main cities into something more usefull like college town or something education related for god sake. There is already enough tourist town and no college town.

SD needs to fix the sewer problems... People that drive Nissan's that have the in-cabin air filter will be ok but everyone else gets the sewer smell like a punch in the face... Bonao is the last good smelling town before you hit SD

loving it ,,,congratulations on the great suggestions ,,,yes , we need even more than you suggest in Zona Colonial but underground car parks and underground power lines are a start ...Most importantly is the need for a proper large bus station between Ave Mexico and 27 de Febrero ,,,at present it is total chaos at the top of Duarte ,,once the buses and gua gua situation is fixed up then the whole market area can be made cleaner and safer
And yes , Boca Chica needs to be cleaned up quickly ,,is a disgrace now

Fix the mess in the north coast first... The north coast can use these funds and will bring more cash into the country

I would spend more time in Santo Domingo but to spend $150.00 everytime I fly in to DR is rediculous.

"The colonial zone should look more like the Woodbury Common Outlets in NY:" - Personally I don't think turning a world heritage site into something that looks like a tacky outlet centre is really a very good idea.

Zona Colonial needs a balance of Restoration Renovation and Development......It is very expensive to maintain and restore these monuments to Dominican History

"Personally I don't think turning a world heritage site into something that looks like a tacky outlet centre is really a very good idea"
so the prostitutes, hustling vendors, garbage, utility wires cob web is part of our heritage?
The place is already full of tacky stores, so whats wrong with expanding the area, cleaning it up, and adding more tacky stores (or other types of businesses for hat matter)? The place would at least look nice and be more welcoming.
